Just got this email regarding a meeting next week for the new help desk system:
"Please come to this session with at a minimum one positive and one negative lesson from this project."
I'll be unable to attend since I cannot come up with one positive lesson.

Status: got into a heart-stopping panic because I ran out of checks and I need to pay my health insurance. When I finally worked-up the sense to call the insurance company they were like, "there's a 30-day grace period, no sweat."
So, panic over absolutely nothing.

Status: Day 4 of no caffeine... still going strong... no headache toda--- AAAAAUGH! WHY DID YOU WAIT TILL 1520 TO START WITH THE HEADACHE‽

Company Successfully™ deployed IE9 to all workstations, after making sure that All Applications™ worked in it........except for the old one that doesn't work in Chrome.

People still use checks?

People still use checks?
Not willingly.
Maybe you missed the phrase, "health insurance."

And that indicates a requirement for checks how?
Before we got married, my wife paid for her Obamacare online, no checks required.
-
Great, you're dealing with a better company than I am. Whoop-de-shit.
-
My apartment complex requires checks, pretty much.

And you are a pedantic dickweed.

Isn't it nice when they give you a reason not to come?

Ugh, checks.
-

The object of focus was "obamacare", not "wife", thus humorously suggesting you're an idiot because you think it's better than whatever you have.
Since I know you'll never figure it out, probably even with an explanation, so I don't know why I'm explaining, now that I think of it.

Hanzo'd!
EDIT:
Hanzo Hanzo'd! It's Hanzos all the way down!

So yeah, new feature added last night that only works in IE9 to an application that does not work in IE9. sigh

Status: Cow-orker's newish Dell, purchased in March, had a hard drive failure in July. They overnighted[1] us a new drive, and it worked fine until about a month ago. Cow-orker neglected to tell me it was acting up for two weeks, until two weeks ago, when it wouldn't start. But the act of taking off the cover apparently made it start working again, once the drive stopped making grinding noises, and he didn't want the downtime, so he took the machine back instead of letting me call Dell.
You know what's coming, right? Yep, the thing died again yesterday when he came in, so I called Dell, and got a second drive shipped out, which arrived early afternoon, and I installed it about 4:30, and as soon as I turned on it started going "shoop...shoop...shoop" or whatever, and then "no bootable devices found." OK, plug it in to MYcomputer..same thing. Plug in his old drive...passed SMART Short DST. Plug his back in, shooping away and "no bootable devices." Ok, now it's time to go home. I can hardly wait until tomorrow to tell him about this.
At this time I may INSIST that he borrow my POS computer that I've railed about here before until such time as he kills IT. This is his third hard drive failure in a year, across two computers, and I'm pretty sure he didn't even touch the newest one. Which is a 250GB WDC Blue built in July, or so the sticker says, so TIL they still make such relatively tiny drives.
[1] more or less, mostly less. When you don't put the thing in the mail until late afteroon, sometimes it doesn't arrive until the second day.

Status: Day 2 of Caffeine Detox.... Why must my head hurt like this‽‽‽
Interesting coincidence; I, too, have had no tea since yesterday morning, and also have a headache. I hadn't specifically planned to detox, but I'm on vacation and have no particular need to stay awake.

Does he lean on the hard drive or something?
-
Does he lean on the hard drive or something?
Not that I've seen--he's more likely to slam his keyboard into the desk. Plus, it's a huge upgrade from his last computer->Pentium 4 2.4Ghz to a Core i5 and 3GB of RAM to 6, so he's got incentive not to break it.

What about ENTERTAINWOMEN??

I've read a couple of the books fairly recently, but it's probably been 20 years since I read the original [Ringworld]. I should definitely read it again.
Done. Picked up an old paperback at Half-Price Books and spend most of the first day and a half of my vacation reading it.

I know what I'm doing this weekend.
-
oh man are you in for a wild ride!
:-D excellent reading choice!

Would I have to turn in my nerd card if I admitted I'd never read that?

Would I have to turn in my nerd card if I admitted I'd never read that?
hmm... nah, just ten demerits.
-
Good. I'm actually in the library at the moment; I'll check whether they have a copy on the shelf on my way out.
-
is good reading. worth the time.
-
I read it when I was like 14. I don't remember a damned thing about it.
-
Yes.
-
Can I get a raincheck on judgment until next week?
-
sure, or you could take the ten demerits because reading the book to the end is worth 50 merits.
;-)

It's the Holiday SeasonTM! Be nice to the guy and flag him for a "Someone didn't get the joke" badge like I did!

Revisiting a hardware decision made six months ago because our parent company's finance department doesn't like the idea of a 1 month turnaround time for maintenance but also doesn't want to maintain enough spares to avoid the downtime...
Looking at my predecessor's original selection, realized he made a major mistake in pricing the alternative option. Now I need to go back and redo the whole selection process...
Why is there no head-desk emoji?

Copying this morning's backups of our production databases to our testing/development server so we have up-to date production quality data for testing. I can't help feeling that it shouldn't take an hour to copy 6.6GB between two VMs on the same host.

Neuromancer
I was really disappointed to not find this book on kindle last time I checked. I'll figure something out. Working through Azimov now though, so I'm not completely lost.

Why is there no head-desk emoji?
The disturbing thing is that someone's come up with a bunch of porn emoji: http://www.thefrisky.com/2014-11-24/sexting-just-got-easier-with-very-nsfw-flirtmojis/
Here's the tamer ones: http://ace.mu.nu/Windows-Live-Writer/Overnight-Open-Th_FE7B/flirtmoji_thumb.png
Hmm, I wonder why it didn't show the image?

Status: Halo 3 Edition Xbox 360's are selling for $138 on Amazon.com. I'm really tempted to buy one again. It doesn't come with ANYTHING, just the console, but I kept my hard drive and all cords and stuff when mine died several years ago.
-
I'm not motivated to do that, as I was busy enjoying listing off old search engines.

They've even got Captain Kirk covered with the green body parts.
Also at least one of the "tame" ones looks like a cucumber in a prophylactic.
