Good horror is based around dread, not startle.
What if you dread being startled? Is it horror then?
-
Work? On Sunday? Between this and your Lounge story: you're doing it wrong.
-
Very slowly. They stopped abruptly. This means there's a major traffic accident outside my neighborhood (which has only 1 road exit).
Either that or they are finally on to you.
Time to get your emergency travel bag, burn your stash and disappear.

63 overtime exempt hours last week. Not bad given I did an uncompensated 90 last year.
In theory I get unofficial comp time, but that's just my boss trying to be a reasonable human being, HR and management does not endorse and I'm still accountable for my responsibilities when I'm out, so I don't take it and just add to the annual list of grievances that I drag out at review time. Last year I had over 400 overtime hours.
-
Why do you work there?
-
As I said; Life: you're doing it wrong. I haven't spent my whole life learning how to program so I had to work on weekends. Fuck that.
-
Status: idly wondering if the writer's bible for Skyrim and Elder Scrolls Online is online somewhere, and if it goes into the rules of Khajiit-speak-- or if they just pull them out of mid-air.
I noticed yesterday (then thought about this morning in the shower) Khajiit universally seem to use the word "sleek" instead of "sexy" or "attractive". At least when referring to themselves. I like that; I might adopt it.
-
At this point? I genuinely like what I do and the next calendar year promises to be interesting as fuck. Either there's a good chance all the management wtfs get fixed or the whole thing goes up in flames.
I can't talk about the details outside the lounge but everybody in the C suites and on the board has stuck their neck out on doing something that is rapidly becoming clearly impossible. So either there's a massive cull there when the shareholders find out or we do the impossible and I get a badass thing to put in my resume. I'm management now, so I can't coast on "I worked in thing x using technologies y and z". I have to be "responsible for architecting implementing thing x which did y million dollars of z with a team of w using technologies q r and s"
If the employee abuse doesn't change at that point (or they stop making my ransom payments), I'm gone though.
-

Even when you're not getting paid for it? Weirdo.
and the next calendar year promises to be interesting as fuck.
There's always something going on. At some point you have to draw the line in the sand, don't let your bosses string you along on promises.
-
They aren't stringing me along. They've likely hung themselves with the string they were trying to use on shareholders. This is a thing I have GOT to see. Think of it like corporate disaster porn.
-
Whatever.
But you lost all rights to complain about unpaid overtime on this forum. I'M WATCHING YOU.
-
You'll note I was complaining about traffic initially. I know what I've done to myself.
And I reserve the right to complain about the department of labor classifying software developers as overtime exempt in the first place. Because that's still bullshit.

You knew that going in. You don't like it? Go dig ditches.
-
Actually I didn't. I only looked it up after starting at a job where they didn't voluntarily pay overtime.
Fucking government.

Status: Cursing API providers which provide tutorials instead of complete API documentation and then do not keep the same tutorials updated when the API changes.
I mean, this here:
await _itemsTable.PullAsync("all_pupils", _itemsTable.CreateQuery());
was the old syncing routine. Contact the server on the other side and pull all info the server is willing to give me for this particular table.
After an update, it has become this:await _itemsTable.PullAsync("all_pupils", _itemsTable.CreateQuery(), false, token);
Okay, the
token
is aSystem.Threading.CancellationToken
, presumably so you can watch over the tasks executed. Makes sense but I wish I had been told about this change somewhere. The bool
false
in there? Fuck if I know. The parameter is calledpushOtherTables
and according to the definition is supposed to be set to true if you want it to push other tables when the one you're pulling to is "dirty".I'm not exactly sure what this is supposed to mean. A Google search was not really helpful, too.

Status: isn't the point of bittorrent to make the download faster? On my machine, not only is it inevitably slower, but it fucks up my outgoing bandwidth at the same time.
-
No, the point is so whoever is providing the download doesn't have to pay for bandwidth.
Any speed advantage is just because the place you otherwise would have gotten the download would inevitably not have a fat enough pipe because they're cheap.
Which is why torrents are great for piracy and shit for commercial use.
-
Well I don't pirate shit because I'm not a piece of human garbage, but tons of commercial products use it. Until I turn it off because it never fucking works.
My current nemesis is World of Warships. Once I FINALLY got the update, it failed to install with the lying error message "not enough disk space", so. Quality.
-
Wasn't implying you did. Just pointing out that the protocols strengths and goals do not align with Blakeys goals.
-
Dammit, Ben, put your stupid pictures on Imgur like everyone else, or paste them into the post.

-
Why do you work there?
Apparently, he's an idiot.
Geez, @weng, get a new fucking job already.
The last company I worked for that pulled that "unofficial comp time" fucked me out of it when they laid me off along with all the other programmers a few months later, and that was only 2 days, and I still badmouth them to people 7 years later.
Speaking of which, don't buy tiles from Interceramic if you're building or remodeling your house.
-
So I should buy tiles from them if I'm not building or remodeling my house?
-
and that was only 2 days, and I still badmouth them to people 7 years later.

I wouldn't want to cut you off in traffic or fumble too much ahead of you at a supermarket register.

That's why I don't consider it real and my annual review is not a fun time for management.

But does that make any actual difference? Doesn't seem like it does.
The company I work for have their fair share of Doing It Wrong™ and s but we have an understanding on overtime. If I do it then they pay it, or I stop doing it.
-
They cough up money. Only ever just enough to buy my tolerance for another brief while, but it adds up. They had to invent a new payscale for me last year, and it's got enough headroom that if they max it out they have a good long while to figure their shit out.
Think of it as "I have them on a performance improvement plan".
-
But does that make any actual difference? Doesn't seem like it does.
or they stop making my ransom payments
He has stated previously that each year is a "you treat us like crap, you are paying me this much more to put up with it for another year or I'm gone" (which is what I assumed the ransom payments was in reference to).
-
Yeah, but gets treated like crap again.
Think of it as "I have them on a performance improvement plan".
That's one way of looking at it, I guess,
We're saving the "fix this or we quit" thing for now.
-
Thus far in 2015 I have worked more than 8 hours or on weekends on 132 occasions for a total of 327 hours.
This is an improvement over 2014 as a whole (124 occasions for 689 hours) and 2014 to Sept 27 (104 occasions 598 hours). It's better. Not good. Better.
-
This is an improvement over 2014 as a whole (102 occasions for 447 hours) and 2014 to Sept 27 (93 occasions 415 hours).
Fuck.
-
I just edited to properly handle weekends.
-
Fuuuuuck.
I worked out the (rough) amount I'd get paid for that much overtime...
-
For his part, my boss doubles my figure this year and beat me by a third last year. His boss on the other hand....

Maybe then we could introduce a badge for most likable posters. ...
NAH, people would totes gamify that, right right?
Then we could all like all of @blakeyrat's posts and give him the badge. Just because it would piss him off. :)

Status wondering if Windows 10 bu, Chrome bug or discourse bug.
Not Win10. Chrome on Win7 was seriously unhappy, too. Not exactly the same symptoms (maybe only because I wasn't maximized to start with), but kept popping another window to the front, thinking for a while, and displaying the tooltip briefly before dismissing it and starting over.
-
Dammit, Ben, put your stupid pictures on Imgur like everyone else, or paste them into the post.
Better yet, don't bother in the first place.

This is not for work, so doing it at home is OK.

Status: Visual Studio 2015 installed.
Now I can open 6 different versions at once!
(Today I keep our main product open in 2013, adhoc debugging and POC projects in 2012, edit XSLTs in 2010, edit our proprietary language in 2008, and our shit legacy apps on 2005. All of this is usually loaded at one time if I haven't shut the computer down in a day or two)
-
The alt text there causes a browser hang until ~5 seconds after you move off of it
-
perhaps that many hex digits were never meant to be in a tool tip....
-
Loads the tool tip pretty much straight away on Chrome OSX. No hanging or whatever.
-
So I should buy tiles from them if I'm not building or remodeling my house?
No, because that would be giving money to the kind of company that fucks over its employees.
-
I wouldn't want to cut you off in traffic or fumble too much ahead of you at a supermarket register.
Why? Those are completely different things.
-
That's why I don't consider it real and my annual review is not a fun time for management.
Yeah, but you keep sticking around, so I bet they get over it fast.

Status: earlier today was drizzley so I was hoping the skies would clear to watch the eclipse. They did everywhere but the small section Luna is actually in, need to remember to be more specific with wishes to higher powers in the future.

Then why were you so specific? What scenario should I buy tiles from them???
