Never saw the movie, but given the way that The Postman got butchered not long afterwards, I am glad I didn't. Sure, let's give an actor with no directorial experience a complex, intelligent science fiction book with little in the way of spectacle in the text and tell him to make a splashy summer blockbuster from it. Sure, there's no real main villain, but we can take this minor character from the end of the book and turn him into a neo-Nazi caricature, and make most of the story revolve around fighting him. We can then throw away all the interesting stuff in favor of a post-apocalyptic rodeo! Brillant, right?
(I still can't believe Brin thought it was an acceptable interpretation of his book, or that making a decent film of it was possible in the first place for that matter; it is far too cerebral a book for a big budget Hollywood blowout. I get that he figured that it was the best the major studios could do with the material, but for fuck's sake, if you know they can't handle it why give it to them at all? Seriously, Dave, you should have seen the whole shitstorm coming, and how it would fuck up the chances of later films based on your work.)

He was probably thinking โwhat a shitshow, but I get money and the books themselves are still goodโ.
-
@dkf Maybe. He did try to defend the film in print, I don't recall what he said but the gist of it was, "Well, it was about as much as could be expected, really". The problem of course is that he didn't address the fact that the film pretty much reverses the meaning of the story.
So yeah, take the money and run is probably what it came down to, especially since he'd already spent it years before (the book had been optioned for something like ten years when Costner took over the project, and Brin didn't exactly have any say in it anymore, so I guess after the shit hit the fan all he could do by then was either stick up for his unwanted step-child or do an Alan Moore style meltdown).
Speaking of whom (very NSFL)

In any case, I don't seem to have gotten the
<details>
tag correct, I had in fact tried it with justopen
, and with no attribute at all, but it always shows as it is now without arrowing it out. Any advice on fixing that? Clearly I have misunderstood something.EDIT: Just tried it again, this time enclosing the text to a summary tag. No dice. Do iframes just not work in
details

@ben_lubar FF 48 (hey, that's the first appearance of Galactus!)
I'm not sure why, then. Let me check on Chromium... works fine there, and on Opera. Huh. Dunno why my FF setup is acting strange.
EDIT: Now it's working in FF, as well. Go figure.

The Shim needed time to activate?

@ben_lubar But what does it mean?

Because FF is a Special that doesn't implement
<details>
natively, and so some extra junk has to be sent over to make it work.

@PJH Who put a rat's head on a stingray?

@aliceif it means that the question has the same probability of being fixed soon as "I want a pony"
