    Its not airborne either.

    This sounds like more propaganda cooked up by Big Pharma just to sell more HIV cures.  "Oh, no, sharing a soda with a friend who has HIV is perfectly safe!  HIV isn't transmitted through saliva, silly, so give grandma a big, sloppy kiss!  And, hey, if you just happen to find yourself taking ill in a few months, we've got a pill that will get rid of that HIV lickety-split!"

    http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/resources/factsheets/transmission.htm

    HIV is spread by sexual contact with an infected person, by sharing needles and/or syringes (primarily for drug injection) with someone who is infected, or, less commonly (and now very rarely in countries where blood is screened for HIV antibodies), through transfusions of infected blood or blood clotting factors.

    Some people fear that HIV might be transmitted in other ways; however, no scientific evidence to support any of these fears has been found. If HIV were being transmitted through other routes (such as through air, water, or insects), the pattern of reported AIDS cases would be much different from what has been observed.

    The CDC has been under the thumb of Big HIV and the pharmaceutical industries since the mid-90s.  Enjoy your retrovirus, sheeple.

    Wait a moment ... is it just me, or do I sense one of those "sooper sekrit conspiracy theory" things going on? Like those "no man in the moon" guys, or those who think that flu shots are genetic engineering projects. HIV thrives on the CD4+ cells, so it mainly lives near them, no point in being anywhere else, that´s why the main risk comes from blood infection. And the CDC knows this well before the 90's!

    Using public restrooms does have a downside, but it isn't HIV. You can get Herpes that way; though that's why most decent restrooms now include the "ring of paper" and sanitize the loo every 3 hours or so.

    Then again, I don't live in an impoverished European country.
    Yeeeaaaasss.... Germany is impoverished *nods slowly*

    12% of Americans live in poverty compared to 11% of Germans.

     As to your comment about HIV:

    0.6% of Americans have HIV/AIDS compared to 0.1% of Germans

    Does anyone have a link to that TDWTF troll removing greasemonkey script?

    (as of 2007)

    1.  GDP per capita:
    Germany ==> $34,200
    USA =====> $45,800

    2. Unemployment rate:
    Germany ==> 8.4%
    USA =====> 4.6%

    I'm assuming you got yournumbers for population below poverty line from the CIA world fact book (correct me if I'm wrong).  In such case consider the following:

    • The German 11% is from 2001
    • The USA 12% is from 2004
    • Thepoverty line is defined differently for different countries.  According to the World Fact Book:

      Definitions of poverty vary considerably among nations. For example, rich nations generally employ more generous standards of poverty than poor nations.

    Obviously citing the population below poverty line is a bad way to prove that one country is more or less "impoverished."

    I figured it was something like this, but I've also come to realize that trying to give facts to 95% of the people on this forum is like trying to get a cat to swallow a pill.

    I didn't realize everyone was so damn defensive over payphones.  For quite some time I've thought of them as an embarrassing, inelegant relic of a far less civilized age.  However, at the rate they are being ripped out by the phone companies, you're going to have to travel to Europe pretty soon if you want to satiate your need for close contact with a public earpiece and microphone.

    I don't believe you. Where do you get that 95% from? You are making up those numbers.

    Payphones, marshmellows, earthworms, dead fish... bring any topic up and someone is going to get sensitive and defensive about it, no matter how trivial or stupid the topic.

    Yawn

    Why would that be ironic or trolling?  See, when the voices in your head shout things the rest of us cannot hear them so you have to put it into words on the computer screen so we can have some clue as to what you are going on about.

    You missed his posting name. See, he originally came up with it by thinking "I'll use an array, with a subscript equal to my IQ. Yeah, that'll work.", and thus was born element[0].

    Wow you're clever, did you think of that all by yourself?

    anyway, my original post was an attempt to point out my displeasure with morbius' blatant trolling without actually derailing the thread.  While morbius' posts may be his "opinion" that does change the fact they are rather ill-considered, right wing, infantile and clearly designed to be inflamatory, from now on perhaps i should follow the old addage of "don't feed the troll" somewaht more closely, perhaps you should do the same.

    You do realize, that the problem doesn't rest with people who make unpopular statements, right?

    The problem lies in people (like you) who decide to derail the thread to talk about about how they shouldn't say what they think

    It is called meta-discussion and it is one of the largest issues here. If you don't like something someone says, then by all means, take it up with them, but you don't need to ruin a thread to do it.

     And morbius somehow trying to make a thread about a broken advertising screen into a right wing diatribe about poor people, gun control and european countries isn't derailing a thread/trolling?

    if morbius wants to have a discussion about those topics the General Discussion forum would most likely be a more appropriate venue

    Boohoo.  I suppose you have a problem with bstorer's comment on ubiquitous advertising too?  I just said I'm surprised that anyone would bother investing in new payphone technology when it is obviously such a dead end.  Then somebody brought up the ridiculous "what if you are mugged for your cellphone" comment which got the response it deserved.  Meanwhile, I don't see a problem with my original statement: I never see non-poor people using payphones and there are plenty of impoverished European countries.  Both of these are accurate statements.  I actually didn't notice it was Germany when I replied originally, to be fair.  Still, if hating poor people and knowing the GDP of European countries is a crime, then lock me up.  Just make sure it's one of those plush jails for rich people.

    The HIV thing was an obvious joke.  You can get horrible diseases from using a payphone and I can't imagine anyone stupid enough to do it in anything but the most dire circumstances.  When people started replying with all kinds of moronic statements about HIV the temptation to mock stupid people for my own amusement was too much.  I apologize if you feel mocked.

    Right back at you big guy.

    see i didn't feel mocked, i was mocking you, you know because of the "moronic statements about HIV" etc., acting like an arrogant prick, that kind of thing, obviously the subtlety passed you by(even though i don't think i was being too subtle)

    P.S. you know you say deliberately inflammatory remarks to annoy people for your own amusement, there's a word for it, it's called trolling

    Meh, it's a fine line.  If someone jumps in and starts giving out false information concerning how HIV is spread, I see no harm in encouraging their delusional behavior.  It's amusing to me and the handful of intelligent forum members and it outs the person as a complete nitwit.  I'm actually doing a favor to the community by ferreting out the criminally stupid and/or insane element of the forum.  I'd like to see you come up with creative ways to get these fools to dig themselves in deeper.

  • If someone jumps in and starts giving out false information concerning how HIV is spread,

    It's spread by poor people yeah?

    is that

    Poor european people?

    or

    Poor gay european people?

    perhaps

    Poor gay muslim european people?

    or

    public telephones?

    it's public telephones isn't it?

    Sorry i forgot the rules of the forum

    MPS or Morbius flaming people == good for the forum

    MPS or Morbius getting flamed == bad for furum

    Why is it you feel it's your job to flame people for being stupid but when you get flamed for being a stupid you get all defensive?  dish it out but can' t take it much?

    If you think you can go around pulling people up for being "stupid" then i can do it to you too, hopefully without you having a cry about it, although i get the sense you'll be gone from the forums soon anyway, "taking your ball and going home" style

    Wasn't it you who started the entire "get HIV using public phones"-thing...?

  • Just ignore him; he just desperately wants some attention.

    If we can somehow get back on topic here, that would be great; if not, then I'm afraid we will need to lock this thread.  (I think we all can agree it probabyl should have been locked/cleaned up long ago!)

    Morbius -- Not sure if you are receiving email notifications from this site, but in case not: please check your inbox.  Thanks!

    I don't really get all that defensive.  I usually just ignore insults lobbed at me because I don't care what some anonymous Internet Tough Guy thinks about me.  I flame moronic behavior because there is no other way some people will learn.

    Regardless, this thread has just become a depressing reminder of the recent brain drain as well as the general humorlessness of most posters.  I'm all for letting it get back on track and dropping the above side argument.  I won't be shocked if some people absolutely will not let it go.
