What laptop brand isn't pure shit?
-
@Groaner Mechwarrior Online.
It takes like 200 rocket hits to kill a mech. Well not a Locust I guess. However it does have cockpit shake.
-
Is there VR porn yet?
Hmm... TODO:
"Sex Worker Murder VR"
You can play as the worker or the john.
The goal is either to murder (or avoid being murdered), while min/maxing the amount of money you have.
Will have to have models of all genders to be fair.
-
@Groaner Why don't you just watch some gameplay videos of Crysis? Also I find amusement in counter strike's score being 1.6.
-
@Lorne-Kates Yes. Look it up, but it is mainly Japanese and looks like anime.

Thanks, I'll take a look at it when I have some time.

Purely coincidental, I assure you!

Well now I'm curious.

Did you try measuring the framerate?
Not yet, but I can try.
-
@Groaner I'm not sure if you'd like it or not. It does have things like critical hits, that I'm sure would run afoul of your list. It's relatively slow-paced compared to pretty much every game in your list.
There's also something of a meta-game around cockpit shake, heat management, and generally annoying enemy mechs. You can load up a mech with machine guns with does nearly zero damage, but shakes the hell out of a cockpit. Or load up a mech with flamers, which also do nearly zero damage, but cause enemy mechs to shut down from overheating. You can create really annoying "streaming lots of small SRM" mechs that basically cover the cockpit glass in explosion making it impossible for your victim to see. Etc.
-
@Yamikuronue Just search VR and Porn on google. There was a VR Porn convention recently in Japan.
-
@XanderTheGamer it got shut down I thought?
Anyway, if I was buying a new laptop, it would be the surface book. But I have a yoga 2 pro, which is more than good enough to be unable to justify an upgrade.
So I can definitely say Lenovo does great hardware.
-
@Magus Too many semen tried cumming in and were rejected. ;-)
-
@blakeyrat A bit off topic, but I've been curious about what your favorite 'Mech(s) are. Too bad there isn't a better topic for this.
-
@Erufael And it's DEFINITELY IMPOSSIBLE for you to create one.
-
@blakeyrat Yeah but I'd have to randomly mention you, and I know how much you seem to love that. :D
-
@Erufael I don't mind if it people act actually asking me a question. I only hate it when people do it for no reason just to be dicks.

@Adynathos It can't run it without me wanting to throw up again according to what I have read and I am extremely sceptical i won't make me want to be sick. I ask for extra sick bags on a plane.
-
@lucas1 Depends on the game/piece of software. (Some virtual desktop software and the like will run in VR without making you throw-up, and valve's "The Lab" is pretty well optimized, so it may be able to run on a 960. Still, it is by no means ideal.
-
@XanderTheGamer I felt sick playing Colin Mcrae 2 on ps1 ... you go figure. Not a fan, rather immersion happened through gameplay itself.
Ikuruga is possibly the least realistic game ever, but damn it is immersive.

@Lorne-Kates I like my Acer S7. Better specs than a MacBook Air by every measure, including cheapness.
I like my Acer Aspire V Nitro. It's massive and looks a lot less obnoxious than the usual gaming-oriented laptops.

I've been happy with Lenovo - I've gotten quite a few over the years, only 1 was DOA. Any issues have been with the low-end stuff. (Or failed harddrives, but I've now gone SSD)

I got mine before and after that - so I missed it. Just nuke/pave. The hardware is solid. But they do love to preload lots of crapware.

I've had to use Lenovos before, clunky crapmachines from China.

QFT. Hardware is solid. Software is just bad.

@sloosecannon Or you can buy an Acer where both are solid and they don't pack in any crapware whatsoever.

Yeah, but mid-low-end Acer is crappy when mid-low-end Lenovo isn't. So I choose Lenovo in that price range.
ETA: I mean, I always do a clean reinstall when I get a new computer. So the time sunk into doing the reset is already sunk, and the better hardware makes Lenovo worth it.
-
@lucas1 said in What laptop brand isn't pure shit?:
Also if a game is immersive enough (Crysis series) I tend to forget the rest of the world exists.
That only works if I take the time to make myself immersed.
If I'm skipping dialog because I want to cut things, then VR would be more fun.

960GTX
big difference between 960GTX and 970...
mine says it can do VR, but I'm not going to bother.
And I have less ram.
Also, my old I7 is slower than my new I5.

Lenovo is on my shitlist. Last one I bought had long-term engineering faults. That is: at some point, completely at random, one of the monitor hinges would seize-- and then literally just snap. Sheared right through.
Guys, look-- there's basically three moving parts on a laptop-- the fans, the hard drive, and the monitor. You're only responsible for engineering one of those things. You MAY want to stress test them. Because, y'know-- A FUCKING HINGE SHOULDN'T SNAP!
Holy fuck, even Ikea has machines that can open and close a box lid a few hundred thousand times to check the engineering. Fucking IKEA. There's zero excuse for this shit.
And even though it was an engineering defect (ie: across the entire product run, not an isolated incident), because it only manifested outside of normal warranty, rather than a recall or a repair kit, it was "fuck you".
So nope, Lenovo is permanently off my "buy/recommend" list.

Fuck laptops with completely inadequate cooling though.

Lenovo has good machines. All the good ones are actually easy to recognize: they all look like ancient IBMs. Every other laptop they make is in some way or another.
-
Of our fleet the Lenovo ones and the HP ones seem to cause the least problems. The dells have tended to have cosmetic issues with bits falling off when given to salesmen.
I always reimage them though as soon as they come in the building, they are all probably filled with wanky WiFi app replacements and other shitware by default. The lenovo I bought for home certainly was.

@Adynathos said in What laptop brand isn't pure shit?:
@Lorne-Kates If you want to have a GPU in the laptop, I can recommend MSI.
MSI is not a bad choice... that is until you need to send the hardware back to repair. It can take a lot time.
But that's like 5 years ago. I don't know if their CS has improved since that time.

@Lorne-Kates Why not build one yourself?
Was this a joke, or are there stock hardware cases and mobos for laptops now? If so, how did I miss that?
Or did you mean it in the maker/modder sense, by putting something like a Raspberry Pi in a constructed case?
CentralField computer shop here provide BTO laptop service. They provide the case, motherboard (has model with/without standalone graphics support and with support of built-in WiFi), LCD, keyboard and trackpad, plus the battery kit. You choose everything else (CPU, RAM, SSD,DVD ROM/writer,etc. ).
Some infromation in Chinese for this service
Note that you cannot buy it on web, and have to go to the shop personally to see what they have to offer.
-
@cheong I know of custom laptop services, but there are only a handful of them (I think Falcon does them, and some of the Linux Laptop companies like System76 and Emperor Penguin do too), most of them are modding an existing system rather than building from the ground up with stock parts, and they usually cost a mint.
In any case, I was talking about being able to order individual parts and compose them yourself, which AFAIK isn't commonly done. Just why it can't I am not sure; I've heard a variety of things, such as the need for specialized tools or the problems of making a stock build motion-shock-resistant, but I am guessing that there just was never enough interest in it to develop a market for it.

@XanderTheGamer My PC which is an i7 (2014) and a 960GTX and 32gb ram can't do VR.
That's damn close to mine (except mine is a 980GTX), and I hit 90FPS on VR just fine, even with 4x MSAA/AF.
