What laptop brand isn't pure shit?

Fuck laptops with completely inadequate cooling though.
My first real with laptop cooling was a customer who told me over the phone that her laptop would just freeze spontaneously without warning. Went round to hers to check it over, and found that (a) she always used it on the kitchen table (b) the cooling air intake grille was underneath rather than on the side (c) the rubber feet were slightly under 1mm tall, leading to (d) every time the fan started, it would lift the tablecloth to block its own intake.
HP/Compaq went on my shit list for that.

Apple is the best, I hate apple.

@Magus It did happen. They just ended it early.
No staying power, huh?
No, because the venue was too small and there were too many people who wanted to visit.

Apple or the commercial Dells. Or, if you have the money, General Dynamics.

ETA: I mean, I always do a clean reinstall when I get a new computer. So the time sunk into doing the reset is already sunk, and the better hardware makes Lenovo worth it.

@flabdablet I was once in a library where some idiot tried to make his laptop fan quieter by suffocating the poor thing with his hoodie...

What puts me off Apple is their horrible keyboards. I hate needing to use chords for Home, End, PgUp, PgDn and Del.

@Deadfast tried, and succeeded, I suspect.
Damage caused by overheating notwithstanding
-
@sloosecannon Quite the opposite actually. It started to sound like it was about to take off. Cue death stares and the idiot leaving in shame.

@Tsaukpaetra About bloody time!
Does it have a proper delete-forwards Del as well?

Eh, sorry no, this is my Sony Vaio Flip's keyboard.
Edit: actually, waot, I think it does actually...

Bah. You'd got me half believing that Apple had actually made something usable.
Edit: ...but only because I am a blind idiot who failed to comprehend that what you were showing me was not a new Apple keyboard with dedicated Home, End, PgUp and PgDn keys, but a just-as-shit keyboard from somebody else without them.

In any case, I was talking about being able to order individual parts and compose them yourself, which AFAIK isn't commonly done. Just why it can't I am not sure
The problem that comes to mind is that in a laptop the components need to fit closely in a small space and the cases / mechanical supports are probably designed for a predefined set of components.
If you wanted to combine a custom chosen set of components, they could not fit into any given case. Maybe the mechanical part could be 3D-printed, but that would be weaker than the usual metal parts. So you should be able to buy parts and build a computer, but giving it the mechanical form of a laptop might be quite challenging.

Sony notebook's keyboard are known to be not very durable, mind you. My colleague's VAIO keyboard need to be repaired twice before the warranty of the notebook itself expires, and at the third time, he need to buy a replacement keyboard (not difficult to replace, but still a major annoyance and it costs money).

If you squeeze in the extra block of keys implied by all that, you have to give up on other things or make the keys smaller. Laptops are always compromises; there's no way around that. OTOH, if you've got an external keyboard then you've got those extra keys you are asking for. (I just prefer to not use my external on this laptop; I trained myself to get good with the chorded combos.)

@dkf They're small, but they're there.
And I can get big ones by turning off numlock.Tiny hipster notebook computers with tiny hipster keyboards can DIAF.

Is there VR porn yet?
Hmm... TODO:
"Sex Worker Murder VR"
You can play as the worker or the john.
The goal is either to murder (or avoid being murdered), while min/maxing the amount of money you have.
Will have to have models of all genders to be fair.
You're not being inclusive enough.
-
@flabdablet That is one well-used laptop.
-
@blakeyrat Yeah, that one's made its way around the school for a while. It was the first one that anything broke on, so I've been swapping away its good bits (optical drive, battery, wifi card, one RAM card, and a display panel so far) as others fail; I'm the netadmin/technician, so I get to collect all the faults that pop up around my site like they were PokΓ©mon.
Some of them, like the display panel and the RAM card, I fix. Others I don't care enough about to bother. I think it has a mobo fault as well - something makes it freeze every now and then.
We've got about twenty of that model. Getting a spare for sacrificial purposes has worked out at about a third of the cost of extended warranties for those, and because we're out in the sticks where same-day warranty service isn't available anyway, it's saved time as well.

@Lorne-Kates Do a podrick the pimp VR game (Game of Thrones Reference, where the whores in the brothel gave him his money back)
-
@XanderTheGamer Are you talking about the infamous game "rape play".
-
@lucas1 Nope. They aren't nearly as bad as that. I remember that at the con, one group changed an anime girl into a black man because the con told them to do that.
