The Official Microsoft HoloLens Thread

Now that a few "waves" have been released, I got a device of my own!
It's pretty nifty, and since I don't want to continue polluting the Status Thread, I'm making a new topic! Yays!Anyways, Discus!

Better than I guess.
Oculus!
Really though, how do you like it?

It's nice. Kinda lamenting the whole "The screen only covers a very limited field of view" thing, and "air tapping" is ridiculous, but it's not bad for a first edition public beta.
And since the software gripes can be addressed (not sure if they're ever going to improve the screen) I'm a bit full of hype. :)

Status: Pre-empted Windows Update by checking it manually. Out of box and already there's an updated build!
Too bad it took a half hour to download and almost an hour to install the image...

At least they didn't Tony Hawk you.

Status: First app I want to try designing is some kind of HUD.
I'm willing to bet that at this point it's impossible to do because it seems only one app is allowed to be active at any given time (unless it has a background thread like a music player? Even then, the UI isn't interactable when in another app).
This HUD would be a minimap of the area, with markers denoting where you've dropped apps, because I think it's potentially annoying to try and figure out where your media player is if you happened to drop it half the house away and want to skip the current track, and have to trudge all the way back to activate it.

There may be a physical limit to the size of the screen. And improving it beyond the size it is now may take very expensive materials from what I read.
"Expensive" as in: Diffraction gates out of pure diamond.

Awe come on, you mean they haven't made it flexible yet?
Then again, according to the system specs (what little I could read from the built-in diagnostics), it only has 2 Gb RAM, so rendering a screen even twice as large as the current one would quickly become problematic...
-
@Tsaukpaetra I'm actually more worried about the CPU driving it, now that Intel has abandoned the Atom line.

I'm sure something will come along, right?
For some reason, it feels like what's running on the 'Lens is just Windows RT for X86 (or something like that). Since they're touting how cross-compatible apps are, once they make a build that runs on whatever SoC processor that comes afterward, it should (in theory) be the same experience....

Maybe. Forecast is murky .

Oculus has this restriction, too, and I fucking hate it. There needs to be some kind of Window Manager that's just for VR apps. Maybe a client-server thing like X Window.

AR. Not VR. Quite a bit different.

Artificial diamonds aren't prohibitively expensive, IIRC.
Filed under: Natural ones are only expensive because of artificial scarcity.

Then it was some other material - been a while since I read up on it.
Though this here indicates that it's still not cheap: http://d.neadiamonds.com/diamond-price

day one 7.4 GB patch
Thank god you can return physical items...
The story for this one was that it was rushed out the door because the studio was losing the rights on the IP. The disc version went on sale the last day they had the rights. The game wasn't finished (or barely started) when the discs were being produced.
So the discs went out with just the tutorial area finished, and the day one patch contained the whole fucking game. And it was super fucking buggy.
I don't really care about day 1 patches or large downloads. I have 150 megabits up/down, and I've gone all cloud & harddrive with my whole games collection - no discs.

The prices for "industrial" diamond aren't so terrible, rather.

Status: OMG I can connect a bluetooth mouse to this thing!
Unfortunately it seems to only support primary and secondary click, and it's not configurable AT ALL.
But it makes using Edge quite a bit easier...

Are all the elephants made of paper yet, or should I just ignore the spaghetti?
The two sentences above make equal sense in this context.

@Tsaukpaetra And a keyboard. You can just project extra monitors with it if you want.
-
@Magus said in The Official Microsoft HoloLens Thread:

Well the Hololens has no concept of monitors. Each App just floats wherever you put it. It can get pretty crowded real quick, but luckily you can just close Apps you're not using or adjust them to be small and out of the way.
Also reporting: used it for six hours with a half hour break in the middle (because it died and I couldn't find my battery pack in time). Feeling fine, though my neck is a little tired from all the swiveling I had to do. Probably just need to excercise more.
-
Status:
Launched a bunch of random UWP apps on the Hololens. End result: So long as it doesn't require a keyboard, you're probably OK. I have an (apparently shoddy) keyboard that works OK for typing, but playing games... not so much.
-
@Tsaukpaetra So, all Bejeweled all the time?

No Candy Crush?

bejeweled is the FAR superior game.

@accalia
Being MS I'm just surprised ... I finally got a new game to play on the work laptop after Purple Place.
-
@Luhmann *Purble
-
@accalia Nonsense, the market has clearly determined that Candy Crush is a much better game than Bejeweled, probably by several orders of magnitude. Let's all hope for a future where all games require microtransactions every 5 minutes. </ancap>

There honestly isnt anything as cool as seeing your broken 1/10 finished app floating above someone's living room.
-
@Magus said in The Official Microsoft HoloLens Thread:

To be fair, it wouldn't have been floating so high if the room didn't have a bunch of trash in it.. .

Status: Built my first Unity app (kinda) following the tutorial. FFS it just displays a cube that drops out of the world (more often than not) when you tap it, and draws whatever the Hololens thinks are real-world surfaces.
Thing builds to 50 Mb in "Release" mode, 80 Mb in "Debug".
The UnityPlayer dll is 60 of those MB in the Debug version.Next up: See how to build the equivalent of WinForm so I can toggle some display things and whatnot.
Or, failing that, pop up a normal UWX dialog view thing and figure out how to switch between the two...
-
@Tsaukpaetra I started a thing!
It... almost works.
-
Status: This is my current Scene settings for the dialog box.
With this I get a static non-moving semi-transparent flat box that can be clicked at any time but doesn't appear to actually exist in the world (as far as the cursor's raycasting thing is concerned).
Any idea what I'm doing wrong?Edit: @error just in case.
-
Status: development stalled while I repair my computer.
After researching, it seems that hand tracking isn't actually that good at the moment, and largely relies on a single gesture.
Maybe by the time I get a dialog box working it will be ready!
-
@Tsaukpaetra said in The Official Microsoft HoloLens Thread:

Computer repaired. Looks like they updated the latest beta for Unity in my absence, hopefully there are no breaking changes.
Oh FFS, is this why my attempt at a dialog is transparent? It actually IS transparent in the editor? WTF!
I'm probably , but if I set an image to an object, I expect it to appear like a solid object! I guess it's off to Google...
-
Status: Great App, Microsoft. Why am I required to type in IP addresses?!?! Why isn't autodiscovery a thing?!?!?
Granted, yes, it says "Enter IP address", but I would think that maybe entering a host name might Just Work, but no, I have to enter 192.168.1.68 like a dufus.

So, after updating, Google Drive decided that it couldn't locate the Google Drive folder. It was in the same place as always. I said "hey, why not look for it where it's always been?" and it was like "oh yeah lol thanks lemme just double check all the files to make sure they're the same..." and it fixed itself. Other than that, everything seems to be working fine.
OneDrive did that to me once back on 8.0. I was like, "You created the folder, dimwad!"
one drive did that to me last week and i was all like "What the fuck?! I KILLED YOU ONCE ALREADY! WHY ARE YOU BACK?!"
Unfortunately, OneDrive is one of the only supported ways to get stuff into HoloLens (as far as User content like music and pictures etc is concerned), so I had to set it up again. Now I have yet another file sync program running on my computer that's likely to start pegging a core to 100% for no apparent reason....
This got me thinking: I wonder how hard it could be to make a SAMBA/CIFS provider for Hololens so I don't have to bugger about with OneDrive? Hmm....
-
Ladies and Gentlemen, I think I finally found a reason to update beyond my current LTSB version...
-
Status: Then Why TF are you even offering it in the damn store! Idiots!

Wait, looks like the UI crashed.... Whoops.

huh, I've forgotten I had one...

Can this HoloLens thing be used to watch 3D videos?
Someone should definitely port a VirtualBoy emulator to it.

@anonymous234 said in The Official Microsoft HoloLens Thread:

In theory, but it's definitely not well suited for it, since it's primarily geared for AR.

If an AppX app for one is on the store (and you link it here), I'd be happy to test for you.

@tsaukpaetra said in The Official Microsoft HoloLens Thread:

Ok, the tool didn't download 4GB, I suppose it's only for the Hololens image it's supposed to use that for.
But anyways, apparently Minecraft for Windows 10 is supported on Hololens. Technically true, it basically treats clicks like touch input. But.... you need at least two fingers to really play, and chicken twitching your head to do it is a Bad Idea.
I need to see if I can pair my Xbone controller to this, I think it would work with gamepad input...
-
@anonymous234 For 3D videos or a port of Telero Boxer, I'd think you'd want one of the VR sets, which are way cheaper and use the same app ecosystem (Windows Mixed Reality).
Samsung's really good one comes out soonTM.
