Pressure to upgrade to Windows 10 ratchets up. AGAIN.

What happens then? Does it just put them in order of which one was plugged in first? Sounds broken. How do you know they'll be the same every time you boot up?
I only tried with one (also, it was the Arduino programmer thiggy, not sure if it's a "proper" COM port, but close enough, especially given the naming I got it obviously saw them as serial communication devices), but the behavior I got was it got assigned to
/dev/ttyUSB0
or/dev/ttyUSB1
(I only tried two ports). The numbering was consistent across reboots and multiple port changes. Each time it was instant.
-
@Tsaukpaetra said in Pressure to upgrade to Windows 10 ratchets up. AGAIN.:
It doesn't know that!
Then the question is: why doesn't Windows immediately know, which of all already installed drivers is best for the particular piece of hardware?
-
@Grunnen said in Pressure to upgrade to Windows 10 ratchets up. AGAIN.:

Why doesn't Windows immediately know that when I type cmd.exe into the "search" box in the Start Menu that I want cmd.exe in the Windows\System32 folder? It's right there in its' own System folders after all!
-
@Grunnen said in Pressure to upgrade to Windows 10 ratchets up. AGAIN.:
If you have multiple devices of the same kind you might indeed need to do some manual configuration to tell the hardware detection algorithm which one is which and how to order/name them.
And if they don't have serial numbers?

No serial. Device number (first line) seems to increment though. Also, seems to be only occupying
/dev/ttyUSB0
now on port changes... I'd have to test more why this happens, might be that Arduino Studio was keeping a lock on it before or something? I could play with it more tomorrow I guess, right now it's plugged into a huge mess I don't want to untangle until I'm done with it.

Windows has an indexing service so that it does actually know immediately where to find
cmd.exe
when you type it into the start menu.Edit: Or maybe it just searches the path, whatever, the result is the same.
-
@Tsaukpaetra said in Pressure to upgrade to Windows 10 ratchets up. AGAIN.:
Once upon a time, I thought that the reason Windows Update was eating up all the RAM and CPU was that it was walking the update catalog and checking dependencies and re-dependencies for each needed update, but now I'm convinced it's just a memory leak that fails to return the correct value from an soft-infinite loop.
It's a memory leak: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3050265
Edit, as a side present, you can block Windows Upgrades if you install this patch, too!

Then again, I do have a metric jubjub of files, documents, websites, apps, and applications namedcmd.exe
, I might actually want the one you can download from the Web...

Erm... why is vital medical equipment running Windows?
For what it's worth I had a CT scan delayed because someone accidentally updated the machine to windows 10 and the client software wasn't compatible with it.

It runs a dedicated system. That is implemented as a DLL that runs inside Windows. It's hardly unique in this; most instruments are as bad, whatever OS they're using to host the software part of the system. Preëmptively firewall them heavily: you know it makes sense.

I've been lurking here for a while now, but this thread has finally compelled me to create an account and post my experience. Yes, I voluntarily upgraded my computer from Windows 7 to 10. And yes, I regret it.
Last night, Windows 10 said it had some upgrades for me, so to avoid the inevitable pain of a surprise reboot I opted to have it install and reboot immediately. When it came back up, I was greeted by both Cortana and Microsoft OneDrive, despite the fact that I had previously told them both to go die in a fire. (And all my carefully arranged desktop icons were squashed into the top-left corner, but I've come to expect that now)
Then I tried to actually do stuff with my PC and discovered that the start menu will no longer open. I kid you not. The start menu, the most basic component of Windows since Win95, is suddenly incapable of doing anything when clicked. But, hey, at least I could look at that smarmy OneDrive window telling me how fun it would be to give all my personal files to Microsoft!
I powered the damn thing down. Maybe it'll be better behaved today, but I'm not optimistic.

Had that happening every now and then with Windows 8.1 too. I think just the button is broken and you can still open the menu with the Windows key, so that you can log off properly.

That's weird, the machine I'm on right now hasn't been restarted in 21 days, and it was only restarted then so I could install more RAM.
My windows machine at home hasn't been restarted in a couple months now.
My Windows server has been rocking strong without a restart for 8 months now.
My linux machine on the other hand pesters me every time I log in that I need a shit ton of updates to useless software I never use, all of which requires a reboot every time.
I guess it's all individual user experience or something...
