If it's deleted, why can I see it?
-
Because NodeBB want you to know it's deleted.
The same thing happens with deleted posts too. :D
-
@Tsaukpaetra Deleted posts disappear after a while though I think
-
@RaceProUK Maybe it still has posts in it that aren't deleted and NodeBB wants you to still be able to see them.

Bots ... are coming to get our goat ?
I love this site :) ...sorry for the intermission RaceProUK
-
@anotherusername Except there's no link, so you can't get into the thread
-
-
This post is deleted!
-
And thus there was a deleted post between this and that.
-
@RaceProUK The topic ID can be grabbed via developer tools, but non-mods/admins can't access deleted topics.
-
@Tsaukpaetra For now; come back in 24 hours or so
-
-
What's interesting to me is that the post links are considered "permalink"-label-worthy.
It's not really all that perma-anything if it can be changed, no?
-
@Tsaukpaetra Oh no, it's still not deleted...
Maybe a mod has to go and click the "purge" button on it? Or automated processes haven't swept it away yet...
-
@Tsaukpaetra I thought they disappeared after 24 hours; I guess not

What do you see? I see deleted posts forever.
-
@Yamikuronue I'll keep an eye on it, see if it disappears

I expect owner and mods (and up) to see the post content, but everyone else to see "This post is deleted!".
I think if there is no automated purge process going on, it should stay like that forever, but if it's purged manually it should disappear for everyone.

That's what I see, but I expected the post to disappear entirely after a while

I believe that if this were to actually happen, all the "permalinks" that came after it would get off-by-one'd, so it's probably neutered intentionally...
-
I mean, I think I can purge it if we needed me to.

Which has now been fixed! At least in git. It's working over at community.nodebb.org. I mean...it won't fix old stuff, but new replies will handle this once it's deployed here.

There are other reasons you preserve "deleted" posts like this beyond permalinking, most notably for context.
Person A: some point
Person B: some retarded point
Person C: the post above is stupidThen Person B deletes their post. Without preserving the record that there was something there, you change the context without changing content and this can cause problems.

That's just the notification data
-
This post is deleted!
-
-
long story short, this is done because posts are loaded a page at a time and if there are many posts deleted then the page may end up empty.
To simplify things, we just have a consistent number of posts and topics load per page. if they've been deleted then they say so explicitly.
If you purge then the post is removed from the set and is gone for good.

For the lazy slacker developers, or for the user?

In all fairness, posting something something that proves one's own self is a retarded stupid head is par for the course here. :avacado:

@Lorne-Kates well, duh, but the point about context is still legit even if lacking dickweedery.
