Yeah, put aside the "complete different meaning".

I said "random" as in "not hardcoded". Even if it's chosen by an algorithm, it's still random as far as any visitor is concerned.

Sorry, but I don't see how "chosen based on the content of the page" isn't pretty much the exact opposite of random. The fact that some algorithm found a word on the page and (mis)matched the ad to it is the entire reason these things get posted in the first place.

Mis-matched?  It's an algorithm.  It did what it was supposed to.  Live with it.  And what Abby said made perfect sense to anyone with a brain.  People often call those things "random ads", although it is obviously imposible for them to be random.

Quite a few people. I'm not going to wade trough the forums right now, but here's an example of what I meant.
Nah, that's a side effect of viewing what is apparently a threaded forum in flat view.  It's all explained here because some completely retarded idiot, who's been hanging around here for a while and is actually a complete newbie even though he doesn't realise it, failed to realise that this is a threaded forum and made the stupid amateur mistake of thinking that MPS was doubleposting when in fact he was being quite reasonable.  This was likely due to this brainless kiddie somehow mistakenly thought himself to be cleverer than MPS and was trying to find fault with him it a pointless and extremely misguided effort to 'make himself look good'.  Hopefully the loser has learned his lesson now, but if he ever shows his face around here again, for instance to post a link that has already been posted twice by people far superior than him, I shall be forced to hunt the kid down and rearrange his face with a rusty shovel.

Some people just don't deserve to live.  The world is a sad place because of people like that.  Hopefully MPS finds a way to scare the lamer away before I have to take drastic action.

See, I often think you might be brain-damaged in some way.  Then I look at your avatar and I think "that's a chick..  with boobs.."  It's really quite hard for me to reconcile.  So, I'd appreciate it if you'd do me a favor and either change your avatar to something more representive of your posts or change your posts so they are all about wrestling other women in a kiddie pool full of canola oil.  Thank you.

Actually it is random, there would be two ways for the algorithm to pick a site to advertise (after reading the source page for content to match against), first being an incremental iteration over a list of every possibly advert, second being a selection by PRNG. Both will statistically report the advertisements in a specific order, however since the site is being accessed by multiple end points at intervals determined by factors outside the control of the program each end point will only get an uncontrolled set of those patterns, as the sections of the patterns are no longer in anyways consistent over an individual connection it is considered as random as any "truly" random source.

  • Ah well, what is randomness anyway.

I'll leave you to xkcd's wisdom.

RFC 1149.5 specifies 4 as the standard IEEE-vetted random number.
