Yeah, that's largely how I learn about new bands. Which sometimes aren't even new, but just new to me.
Yeah, I used to do that. But Pandora has their own agenda and kept pushing music that was WILDLY outside of my up votes and seed lists. Eventually got sick of it and jumped ship.

@aliceif Bad? Who said anything about "bad"? MBV is primo horrible cacophony.

@Vaire That's weird, Pandora has always behaved for me. Almost too well, sometimes, to the point of eliminating variety by accident.

I've said it here before - I like the music. It's entertaining. I have it on one of my Spotify playlists, although I'd not go see it live. I was just saying that getting into the top 40 isn't necessarily proof anything is good.

Are we talking pre or post-Tarja drama? Because the group hasn't been the same since Tarja left.
But yes, if you like symphonic power metal, I could easily list half a dozen or so good groups.

Oh, I never said that just because something was in the top 40, meant it was good. It is just an achievement, especially for a foreign-national band. You are correct about the beibs :shudder:
Oh, for sure, I am not a fan of the Japanese schoolgirl thing either. Women's rights in Japan are about five decades behind where most of the rest of the developed world are right now.
At least they finally stopped making the girls wear those incredibly inappropriate cut-out "shorts" (bikini-bottoms) for PE/gym a while ago. Baby steps, people, baby steps :sigh:

That's the only other girl j-pop band I know of, and only because the guy who wrote Proxomitron liked them, and Cartoon Network did a short years ago that they did the music for. I think. Unless I'm confusing them with someone else on that last bit.

20 minute flute solo and strange orchestra combos?
Geez. That reminds me--I had a friend in high school, hadn't talked to him in like 15 years. Reconnected on facebook a couple years ago. He lives in Indiana now and apparently does some weird stuff like that, or the stuff Ross did in that one episode of Friends. Not to my taste, but it makes him enough money that he can go on tour every once in a while so I guess there's a market in it.

It is all consumerism. Japan music producers do not care much about entertainment as long as it sells and they have been very successful at selling. Take a look at the huge range of pop idols in Japan. They sell alot. It may not be music but it sure is great sales. Which is why I rather be the fan of the producers, then the groups themselves. The producers really do know how to sell.

@aliceif fuck, avril lavigne->evanescense->Nightwish is practically speaking, a gateway to an entire world of badassery.
Add Lacuna Coil in there somewhere, and you mostly have the starting point for how I found most of my favorite bands and singers. Well, and a few others like AFI (after Jade Puget joined) and Theatre of Tragedy (Liv Kristine -> Leaves Eyes) and Tristania and and and
...and I'm gonna stop now.
Although there were things like a punk compilation that lead me to psychobilly (Horrorpops -> the Creepshow -> the Hillbilly Moon Explosion) and a music subscription service that forced me to look outside the mainstream to find stuff (the Dreamside,
some ecologistsEgo Likeness, Amanda Palmer/the Dresden Dolls, a few others I can't remember right now).Nowadays it's mostly Amazon recommendations, YouTube, certain record labels (Napalm Records, primarily), and just browsing places like Bandcamp and Spotify looking for interesting or not-my-usual stuff (a habit happily retained from that subscription service).

Floor Jansen as singer:
- Endless Forms Most Beautiful

This. I'm nowhere close to being someone who likes metal but I did get a kick out of this combo. Could I listen to it for longer periods of time? Don't know, I suspect I'd get bored due to lack of love for metal, but I have a thing for weird-ish genre combos.
@Polygeekery said in Say what you will about Babymetal, but...:
But I thought they were horrible cacophonies and not music.
There's a weird line which we draw between noise and music, and it seems to be highly subjective. For example, I really enjoyed like 90% of all dubstep I found in its "early" days, but most of the newer stuff I find I'd mostly classify as "noise". Other people seem to enjoy it though. And I do enjoy glitch hop most of the time (the main shtick being that most of the samples used are mangled and/or get cut off prematurely) so I can enjoy something that doesn't follow strict "rules" most of the time. It's a weird thing.

I will check out of those tracks and report back.

Yes, which is why if one wants to hear non-idol music, one must seek out and support the musicians who have broken away from the producers and idol scene. Like YUI. And LiSA is working on that ^_-

Yup, that is pretty much the reason I have a couple of their songs in my catalog. The music itself is fun/catchy, and it is just so odd, I couldn't not get a few of them. I can't listen to them for very long, as I am not a big metal fan, but I do like the stuff of theirs I have.
I will, however, have to disagree with you on dubstep, that shit IS noise.
