The Gift of Favicons

Why is the favicon a red giftbox with a shitty half-finished bow?
Where is Mr. WTF Face?

Because NodeBB puts numbers in front, which covers most of the favicon. IMHO the notification numbers thing is poorly implemented in the browser, but meh.

Because this is shitty half-finished software?

@Tsaukpaetra Aren't favicons supposed to be heavily, heavily, heavily cached to reduce bandwidth?
What is wrong with (31) in the document.title, like any sane system?
WHERE IS MR. WTF FACE?!?!?

The number overlay is not generated on the server, it's all done client-side.

Discourse had it as an option at least. Default was off.

@loopback0 I was talking about the favicon being the interrobang, not the notification counter.

I'm part horrified, and part impressed that modern browsers can run JS & DOM to generate an image on-the-fly and then assign the in-memory image to the favicon.
I grew up on IE 5.5, this shit is magic to me.

Ohhhhh. My bad.
I'm sure sometimes it showed up as face though?

On iOS, the icon is the wtface.

Surprisingly enough, you've been able to alter the page title client-side via JS for 20 years.

Sure, but putting the counter in the icon has an advantage of being visible even when the tab is pinned. Both ways are valid and ideally both should be available.

Sure, sure, I just needed to a bit.

I used to visit forum on desktop, I've never seen it. That's how I used to tell which tab was a forum one and which was the main site.
Seriously, I loved Mr face.
