How can I see from the topic listing if there are unread posts?
-
This might sound retarded but when I go to the main category listing - not the unread one - I have absolutely zero idea what topics have new posts in them.
I wouldn't mind just a 'new' icon, that takes me directly to the first unread post in the topic. Even 1990s toxic hellstew gets this right...

Funny thing, it does exist on mobile. Tapping the title takes you to the first post, but tapping the tiny right arrow above the post count takes you to the last unread.

That's still retarded and unintuitive. Doubly so on desktop.

File a bug? We're not banned from this forum's bug tracker yet.

If you're inside a category the topic titles have a different colour if they have unread posts.
-
@Arantor it seems that :unvisited works, stuff with new posts is blue for me. Maybe we could at least CSS that?

I see some in blue, some in black. The colours do not correspond to whether I have unread posts in them or not, since in theory it seems to be 'blue is no unread' and 'black is unread' and yet I have threads in black that are up to date.
@Onyx that doesn't entirely work for me either, already thought of that one ;)
-
@Arantor Mine is the opposite. With the 'paper' skin, black means everything is read, and blue means there's a new post.
It only seems to work for the topics created/updated since the install though, as all the old topics show as black.
-
@Arantor I was just suggesting a temporary measure to at least make stuff more visible ;)
-
@coldandtired Maybe it's me confusing the colours but even so it's still not actually obvious and goes against one of the rules of accessibility - don't use only colour to differentiate something.
-
@Arantor I'm on mobile so can't test, but is it possible to combine :after with :unvisited?

Isn't that the "visited/not visited" standard browser link tracking? At least I kinda assumed it is...
-
@Onyx Should be possible. Whether it will be properly honoured is another matter entirely.
-
@Arantor I agree. I'm still trying to find a skin that doesn't make my eyes hurt and where some important information isn't hidden due to colours clashing.
-
@Maciejasjmj It is but it's only for the exact URL being listed, so since all the links point to the first post, having visited/unvisited isn't going to help if you have already been to the topic before (thus visited) but you're after part way down the page.
Hate to say it but this is something everyone else did years ago...
-
@coldandtired I'm still using the default skin just because CBF to deal with all the bugs right now
-
@Arantor yeah, I think we've kinda figured out on Discourse that thing doesn't work as it should.
-
@Maciejasjmj Actually on iPad with URL barfing disabled, the highlighting it had, whatever it did, actually worked. Topics with unread were black, topics all read were more grey. But I put that down to the various history tracking shit being exposed per topic than the browser :visited state.
-
Another oddity is that the topic title colour gets updated automatically when a new post is made, but it won't get moved to the top or the last post section updated until the page is refreshed.

I actually support that, having stuff move around without your input gets old fast.
-
@Onyx But then shouldn't the title stay the old colour until the reload as well?
Also, what is the significance of the colour of the vertical line between the topic title and the last post?
-

It's the colour of the category

Eh, debatable. I'm ok with it showing that it's updated as long as it doesn't move on me.
-
@RaceProUK Can't be:
I didn't include it, but there are other unread topics which are grey and not yellow.
-
It is, but only for topics with unread posts; topics that are all read are grey.
Wait...
Hey, @Arantor, there's your indicator!
-
@RaceProUK Ah, I see that now.
With the 'paper' skin, the difference between read topic and unread meta topic is pretty small.
-
That happens with all skins, but that's because the category colour is grey
