Markdown failure
-
So I was using an online distraction-free editor, and I asked it to export my text as markdown.
How did it come up with this?
_he was probably expecting a fight,_<b style="font-style: italic;"> **Delia thought to herself.
-
This editor doesn't sound very distraction-free.
-
It's not only distracting to the author, the character can't even finish a thought without thinking about HTML.
-
Markdown is broken. Coming up on tonight's news at 10...

an online distraction-free editor
*cough*

Actually I never bought into those supposedly "distraction-free" editors. There's nothing that distracts me in Word or Notepad++ or wherever I put my text, the problem is that I start doing research on something I'm not sure about and suddenly it's 3AM and the text window is empty.
-
What's the most distracting part of my screen right now?
If you answered "the huge white rectangle", that makes two of us.
-
What's the most distracting part of my screen right now?
The "I Lack An Attention (s)pan" text in the lower right corner? I mean, it's self-fulfilling prophecy.
-
I'm not sure if we've ever used that Mumble channel.
-
I'm not sure if we've ever used that Mumble channel.
Because you forgot about it the moment you created it?
-
What's the most distracting part of my screen right now?
Unread/Unnoticed update occurred in your GMail tab. Likely a new email, but could just as well be a Hangouts Message you disappeared from the app.
-
I think @Joel made it.
-
-
So I was using an online distraction-free editor,
Typically the thing "distraction-free editors" are protecting you from is being online.
(Also the entire concept is stupid. You already have a maximize button with works with ANY writing app. If you're so incapable of writing without distraction, maybe it's not the profession for you.)
-
I have a "distraction-free" IDE. It's just my regular IDE, but I put hefty easily-visible headphones on.
-

It's just signaling for hipsters, you realize.
-
It bothers me that, due to those dumb hipsters, software developers are making money selling software that has fewer features than all their competitors. Because, you know, being able to change the font size is a "distraction".
Ridiculous.

Are they harming you? If idiots want to waste their money, it's not ripping anyone off to take it if you're providing a perceived benefit.
-
No, but neither is the guy who sells a wood block which makes stereos sound better because it uses the power of sun spots to collect leftover bits that leak out of your A/D converter.

That's different, because it's a scam.
-
I don't see a significant difference between the two things.
You're selling a product which is identical to Word after you hit the maximize button and the minimize toolbar button (whatever it's called), and you're specifically charging for the fact that it doesn't do 95% of the stuff Word does.
Now something like Scrivener, that's a product. It does stuff, useful stuff for creative writers. A "distraction-free writing program"? That's a nothing. That's some jackass spending 20 minutes in WinForms dragging a edit field onto a blank form, then charging $25 for his services. Heck, the scam woodblock probably took more effort to create. At least he'd contract someone to make a fancy-ass logo for it.
Oh and BTW, to make it even worse, most of these "distraction-free" writing programs haven't even implemented the less eye-catching "text fade" visual effect that Word has. So even for the purpose of being distraction-free, they're worse at it than plain ol' Word.
-
It is curious why people find the editor's toolbars/controls to be "distracting".
These toolbars look new and attract attention maybe for the first 30 minutes of using the program, then you get accustomed.
-
That's what I was saying before. If that's literally a distraction to you, then writing is not your thing and you should just admit it.
Imagine someone selling "distraction free" guitars, which are exactly like normal guitars but painted entirely matte black. Because that glossy finish is so distracting. It's so much easier to play guitar without all that distraction. You'd say that's the dumbest thing you've ever heard, right?
But writing tools-- nope! If it's a tool to do writing and not a guitar, suddenly it's genius.
The way to get good at writing is to write. And, like Adynathos says, if you actually write you get over the distraction of having a toolbar on the screen in the first 5 minutes.
I mean God knows there's a million reasons why none of my short stories have been published, but my level of "distraction" is precisely zero of them.
-
I just wanted something simple without ad slots or confusing UI. I use Scrivener at home.
-
WordPad's still a thing, I think
-
Notepad's still a thing, too.
-
@Lorne_Kates said:

copy con ch2.txt
should therefore still be a thing too!
It beats them all: you literally CAN'T go back and edit (after pressing Return).

-
the guy who sells a wood block which makes stereos sound better because it uses the power of sun spots to collect leftover bits that leak out of your A/D converter
Yeah, those things are a total scam. Everybody knows the only way to stop leftover bits leaking out is to paint the edges of the discs green with special markers.
-
actually I'll have you know you made it a very very long time ago
-
but I put hefty easily-visible headphones on
I've used earbuds for years, and recently switched to some easily visible cans. The difference they make is huge, I get far fewer people disturb me now.

Which is actually a pretty decent idea if it wasn't for the fact that it costs 500 fucking dollars.

Yes, thank you, I know about that page, I was doing a callback. Sheesh.

Um, actually, you can go to a Goodwill or Salvation Army and find a perfectly good typewriter, instead of POLLUTING THE PLANET with an INCREASED CARBON FOOTPRINT that comes from making a whole new typewriter.
-
not to mention tle old mechanical typwriters just feel sooo much better than the electric ones.

That religious show where the body builders tear phone books in half while telling us how great Jesus is?
EDIT: No, that was the Power Team. Hour of Power is just normal sermons.
