VICTORY
If it's such a victory, why weren't you able to take a screenshot of your desktop without an external camera?
-
Because OSX is better left observed from distance and not used.

Came home looking forward to playing some Binding of Isaac, listening to some podcasts and screaming at blakeyrat.
"Oh right. I'm on Mac now".
Just a bunch of default Apple crap, no games, none of the software I'm used to.
TODO no 1: Figure out how to force Home and End keys into working AS THEY FUCKING SHOULD BEFORE I MURDER SOMEONE OR SOMETHING AGGHHHH!

Binding of Isaac and Rebirth both run on Mac.

Clearly @cartman82 hasn't installed anything yet.

Was about to write a snarky response, but then I made a typo, wanted to go back and correct it and WAS ONCE AGAIN ANNOYED BY HOW HOME AND END LEAD YOU TO START OR END OF PAGE.
THE ENTIRE INFINISCROLL PAGE
WHAT MORON THOUGHT THAT WAS A GOOD IDEA!?

Wait wait wait, is that not expected behaviour? That's what happens when I do it?
Or are you implying that it continues to do this even when in a Textarea field?
Status: Kinda wants to get a real mac (or a machine that can properly Hackintosh) just to see is going on with @Cartman82...

You're gonna love NodeBB and its not-stealing-browser-keybindings.

I clicked reply.
I focused on the text field.
I pressed Home.
It scrolled LIKE 10 MILES UP, WTF APPLE AND DISCORSE!!?

Huh.I wonder what the Apple Way™ is? Maybe holding the Control key while pressing Left Arrow? Or was it

Command-Left Arrow.Well, shows just how much my mind is in alignment with Apple.

Let's use an obscure two handed key combo for a thing you need ALL THE TIME and have a dedicated special key for a thing you need PRACTICALLY NEVER.
Eh, Apple, Apple. Be glad ye'r pretty cos' ye sure ain't smart.

Removed all the Apple apps I don't need from the dock.
About the same ratio as Windows, I gather.

Well.... fuck.

WTF steam
-
How the hell does it run on Linux, then?
-
Whaaaaaat?
-
That error is great in two ways.
The first is that it's nearly impossible to imagine what bit of Steam could break if the filesystem isn't case-sensitive.
The second is the whole, "why the fuck would ANYBODY use the case-sensitive filesystem?" angle.
-

Yeah. My laptop does this too (Sony Flip), where the Home key is actual Fn-Left. You get used to doing things a different way I guess.
-
The second is the whole, "why the fuck would ANYBODY use the case-sensitive filesystem?" angle.
You get to chose when you format the HDD.
I figured, case sensitive option is clearly the safe bet here. I guess Steam has shown me, huh.

That's just about the saddest thing I heard today.
"I know he sometimes hits me when I'm bad, but he's always sorry afterwards and he really really loves me"
-
You get to chose when you format the HDD.
Sensible people use the default.
I figured, case sensitive option is clearly the safe bet here.
Why would you think that? Why would you want that?
-
Why would you think that? Why would you want that?
Since I'm going to be installing all sorts of projects, I figured at least one will have some kind of UpperCase/lowercase combo of files and folders.
I can live without Steam, but I can't live without a full unix compatible shell, for work.

Battles must be chosen. This one was intentionally lost.
-
A lot of Mac apps expect a case-insensitive file system as it's the default. For example most of Creative Cloud requires it.

Fuck that shit.
SO. MUCH. BETTER.

Might hit you up for sources, that almost looks interesting....
*shakes head* Wait, what? Engine you flippin gafrash little ...

Got it.
I'll see if I can convert before I invest too much time into setting everything up.

It keeps you closer to the home row on the keyboard.
Macs have a somewhat different history to PCs and the different way they do keyboard shortcuts for things is one of the ways it shows up. They're also much more optimised around the laptop experience, where Home requires a multi-key combination to use anyway (and I can never remember it).
-
The first is that it's nearly impossible to imagine what bit of Steam could break if the filesystem isn't case-sensitive.
That's easy. We all agree that they have interns doing all their UI, right? They probably all case everything differently, and put two files in the same directory with different casing!
No, not a good reason in the slightest.

STATUS
Sigh.

Why you no pick encrypted?
-
The second is the whole, "why the fuck would ANYBODY use the case-sensitive filesystem?" angle.
Because that way you can have a file named
File
and one namedfile
. Duh.No, I can't think of an actual better reason than that.
-
I can live without Steam
You can also put Steam on a separate partition, if you've got space for one. Use Disk Management to shrink your Windows partition down and use the free space.
-
The second is the whole, "why the fuck would ANYBODY use the case-sensitive filesystem?" angle.
anyone who uses Linux.
hello EXT3
-
You have to use the low level "I am very intentionally doing this wrong" APIs to create cased files.
You ninja edited out remarks about NTFS.
-
So why is it a good thing?
-
Why would I? Sounds like pain in the ass.
-
So why is it a good thing?
why would it be a bad thing?
and for that matter, in this day and age why can i not create a file named
CON.txt
on windows?why is that a good thing
-
It's a bad thing because user usability regarding case sensitivity.
Also regarding CON, that's a wart from like 30 years ago that is still there for hysterical reasons.
I miss
copy con file.txt
.
-
It's a bad thing because user usability regarding case sensitivity.
i have literally gotten calls from non technical people using recent versions of windows that they are confused by the fact that they can create
FILE.txt
andfile.txt
in separate folders as separate files, but if they try it in the same folder trying to create the second one complains that the first already exists, or worse overwrites the contents of the first.so case insenitivity is not universally obvious. Common, maybe, but universal nope.
Also regarding CON, that's a wart from like 30 years ago that is still there for hysterical reasons.
yes, yes it is.WHY IS IT STILL WITH US?
-
Windows is kind of big on its backwards compatibility.

Windows is kind of big on its backwards compatibility.
and?
that "compatibility wart" is 30 years old, why keep it now?
or is the wart more palatable because it's in commercial software?
-
I suspect you would be surprised at what warts are still actively in use, or expected to be there.
There's still a lot of stuff that relies on classical serial ports, for example. For all I know it still relies on other ports like that.
Besides, I use NUL for the original intended purpose, and recently too.
-
Because Microsoft sees your "context" pun and does not approve
-
that "compatibility wart" is 30 years old, why keep it now?
Because people still use it! What's a good time for you to tell everyone that you're going to take away their feature?
-
Because people still use it!
they use it because it's there!
if you're going to fix it at some point you have to rip the bandaid off. Fast or slow it won't change the pain, and either way you gotta go through it to fix what's broken.
-
You still use ext3? You heathen.
