Upgrade to Windows 10 right now or immediately?
-
I'm a fan of pretty simple window managers / themes, but they went a bit overboard.
Agreed. It seems they're trying to kick us back to Windows 3.1-Style at times...
-
I've heard people say this, and I've used 3.1. Conclusion: Nope.

Well, of course it isn't exactly like it was back then, just the visual style of things. For instance, two-tone-everything with squares galore. For a while (XP to 7) everything was all about rounded, transparent, colorful UI elements. Now, Boxes.
-
I want money. Give me some.
-
Yes, XP was knobbly, and Vista moreso, but I don't think there's anyone who thinks those look anything but tacky at this point. 7 was not colorful, and 10 is no less colorful. As for rectangles, Google loves those too these days, as does pretty much anyone writing software for rectangular screens. You could Jeff everything round, or add more early 2000s gradients, but no one wants to see that.

I think he was trying to emulate niceness?

Nah...that's maybe primitive or whatever, though I kind of wonder what it would look like if you updated it for modern display technology. It's more that it just looks unfinished or broken.
-

Wonder what Windows 10 would look like skinned as Windows 3.1? Well, there's a theme set already for Windows 8.1, and those are (somewhat) compatible with Windows 10, so... maybe someone can try?
-
Maybe he thinks non-technical people won't realize that they can just click on the X in the upper right corner of the nag dialog box?
-
The kind of person who doesn't know that the X closes the window is the same kind of person that shouldn't be trusted deciding whether or not to update software.
-
True, and that could be part of @cartman82's point.
-
That's why I like Google Chrome. It's pretty much guaranteed that the user is using the latest version, or that they will be next time it starts up. Because it doesn't make you restart your browser when you don't want to.
-
My impression of screenshots and my super brief first hand experience was that the windows looked like the sort of thing you'd get when the system was locked up or whatever and hadn't gotten around to drawing the window decorations.
In the latest update, the color of the title bar of the focused window depends on a color you choose in the settings. Originally it used to just be white, but we all used the Feedback App to upvote the guy who complained about it. Now I really like the way things are.
-
Using deceptive tactics to trick noobs into upgrading.
I think it's pretty obvious why they did this.
They don't want 7 to become the next XP. They want people to actually upgrade.
You can argue that it may be a scammy tactic, but honestly, what do you lose by upgrading? They're scamming people into something better (OH NO!)
-
My Android phone nags me like crazy when there's an update (It shows an un-dismissable notification that launches the update if you click it. Annoying to me because the update fails due to root so I have to ignore it...)
My dad's tablet won't even let you cancel it - just postpone.
There's nothing to lose[1] by upgrading, so why is the hard sell on the upgrades so terrible? keep in mind that the target audience here is the same target audience that will probably never upgrade on their own. And probably doesn't enable security updates either
[1]. Yes, technically you could have incompatible hardware or an upgrade problem. I still don't think that's a big enough concern to worry.
-
My dhromebook has a little icon that pops up in the notification area that tells you when there's an update. Then you click the button, the screen goes blank for like one second, and then you log back in and go about your business. It doesn't force you to update within X minutes. It won't reboot when you're not touching it. Chrome is really good about updating when the user wants it to and not letting the user accidentally run an old version at the same time.

The buttons that look like buttons, the horror!
The horror!

GASP! They even have rounded corners!

I still like SUSE best, purely because of YaST.
I read that as "I still like Susie because of yeast" and almost liked your post immediately.GASP! They even have rounded corners!
Stop traumatizing the kids! They still think it's new and not a solved problem.

I have no problem using my NAS.
Now that I'm not quite so hacked off with it, I'll admit that it might be the filesystem. Or it might be the version of OSX. Or it might be both. It was just the vast amount of hahano that was really frustrating.
(The user also had the gall to be still using an ancient Apple mouse. :donotwant.gif:)
-
TM says “No”, or rather doesn't list the network mount as backup destination at all.
I wonder if it depends on the protocol used to connect to the NAS? It refuses to show my NAS (connected via SMB) as a backup location too, but would (apparently) happily try to back up my 500+ GB to a 32 GB USB stick …

There's nothing to lose by upgrading
Oh, have they re-enabled transparent shell integration with OneDrive?
-
I don't think there's anyone who thinks [Windows XP] look[s] anything but tacky at this point
I thought it looked tacky when it was new — I distinctly recall thinking it resembled Fisher Price toys more than anything else, and later I discovered I wasn’t the only one with that opinion. And don’t get me started about the alternative colour schemes it came with.Wonder what Windows 10 would look like skinned as Windows 3.1?
Not really. If they’ve done the job correctly it’ll look like Windows 3.1.
-
Oh, have they re-enabled transparent shell integration with OneDrive?
Screw that. The idea was good but the implementation was horrible. I came from Win7 so all I know about it is that a lot of people complained about it because it was unintuitive, so that's why it got removed.
-
I came from Win7
Ah, a strange and wonderful land it is too, I hear! What news do you bring from there?
-
What news do you bring from there?
I bring the news that Win10 is pretty much Win7 with a better looking desktop environment and some new features to boot.

I'm still to scarred from using Win 8 on production machines to upgrade my laptop from 7 to 10. There are too many metro-esque tiles in the screenshots.
-
The new start menu is actually really nice - instead of a list of apps (that I could never learn the positions of for some reason) you get icon tiles that you can arrange as you like (and this is much better for my productivity because I can find them much faster) - but you can still resize the start menu to have no tiles at all and just use it as a list like before.
(The black icon is Chrome Remote Desktop - all chrome icons are black in the small size in the latest update for some reason)Other than the start menu and login screen, I haven't seen anything metro at all.

Hello! I am an adult human being!
I am admitting to hundreds of people that I am terrified of icons.
This is not embarrassing or anything at all.
-
Careful! Those scary icons are gonna gitcha... aaaaaaAAAAAA

I was saying that Windows 8 UI was such a piece of shit that I am leary of upgrading. This is not embarrassing or anything at all.
I believe it is embarrassing - to Microsoft.

(connected via SMB)
Ah, that's your problem. You need the AFP daemon for Apple products to recognize it properly.

OS X moved to using SMB2 by default in 10.9, IIRC. Whereas my NAS runs Linux with, I assume, Samba.

Don't play an idiot. You know exactly why this is bullshit. If any other company pulled this crap, you'd be the first one to call them out for that.
@blakeyrat was brainwashed while working for them

There used to be a web-based windows 3.1 remake at http://www.michaelv.org/ but it's loading as a blank page for me.

There also used to be a Roman Empire.

But there still is pizza!

Nice. Now my work PC looks awesome! And my laptop will look awesome too soon...

GASP! They even have rounded corners!
Wow, just think about how humanizing circular buttons would be...

Is pizza kosher, tho?
-
I don't think there are many Jewish Syrian refugees.
-
Is pizza kosher, tho?
You're looking for "halal", not "kosher".
The answer is "it depends".

And worse, he has a robots.txt with[code]User-agent: ia_archiver

in it so you can’t even access the page through the Wayback Machine either.

Fun fact: I had a friend at uni who kept Halal, and she ended up hanging out with the vegetarians, because vegetarian food is automatically Halal. So veggie pizza is fine.

There's nothing fun about vegetarians.
