Servercooties are annoying again
-
Its not badge queries, its the "purge unactivated accounts", easy workaround is to disable it for now which is what I just did.
Then I can download a backup and figure out why its fucking up so bad.
On our biggest site this job is a 595ms job... something is weird in this db.
-
I realised that as soon as your post streamed in, hence why I deleted mine ;)
-
-
-
I went to check tdwtf when my eyes opened up to check that stuff was ok here, 502 ... RAN downstairs, just in time to troubleshoot this.
-
Have you considered joining the cult of http://servercooties.com/ ?
You'll get notifications when we're down. (and you're not sleeping etc.)
-
Went looking for a more exact quote, and found this:
“In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the
cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat
could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.”
― Terry Pratchett, Lords and LadiesThought I'd drop it here to give you something to smile at
-
Sure will add that :)
Just confirmed that running the purge inactive job is innocuous, I put in so many numbers that we get a date overflow every time it runs. Will download a backup later today and see why this happens.
Except for this blip I am safe to assume perf has been better than usual today?

Avoid a bug by triggering a bug? Eh, if it gets the job done ;)Except for this blip I am safe to assume perf has been better than usual today?
I don't know about 'better', but it's been alright
-
BTW, Delay in notification was due to sidekiq being paused during the backup I just did.
-

I'm not usually bothered by the perf, i haven't noticed a difference.
-
When is that task scheduled to run? According to my Steam chat logs, the site has been going down at 20:xx UTC for the last few days.
-
Its a daily schedule, which is based off the last time it ran + a certain percentage of magic "schedule" jitter I inject so we don't have a situation where all schedules run at exactly the same time.

Could be the import? Lots of really old stuff there.

I was gone a few hours before the cooties, but after I disabled a couple more bots (see the topic about that in Staff) it definitely looked good while I was around.
-
but after I disabled a couple more bots
did you publish a list publically or contact the owners of the bots to let them know?
-
I just missed a couple that belonged to @loopback0.
BTW, the bots and semi-bot users had really big usage yesterday, but I suspect the cooties that happened yesterday may have contributed. Tomorrow's report should let us know now that we've (theoretically) eliminated another source. I've included some additional entries for context:
Username Duration Reqs -------- -------- ---- [Anonymous] 90260.43 99618 NetBot 13972.70 4951 RaceProUK 13255.34 6087 accalia 12524.95 6824 sockbot 11850.21 4822 CodingHorrorBot 5702.58 7622 PaulaBean 4138.93 11083 Zoidberg 3179.70 1731 abarker 2379.70 3057 abird 2352.36 2507 PJH 1881.79 2210
OTOH, maybe there's something about Sockbot 2.0 that's increasing request levels, too?
-
This pesky @PJH again. Always trouble! No wonder he showed up on that list! I am like 90% sure he is a bot!

hmm, not that i did intentionally. @sockbot, @accalia and @zoidberg are the three bots that i've upgraded to 2.0 right now (trying to keep that number lowish to prevent a spread of cooties.)
that report is by username, not IP so all the bots are separated... huh...
SockBot and Zoidberg have almost identical configs too, so the difference in their durrations is weird and, honestly a little suspect.... Unless someone was PMing one bot a lot more than the other or @mentioning them they shouldn't have any difference in usage or requests... In theory at least.

i need more caffeine, i forgot that would summon you.

Now we will get another cootiestorm from people trying to log into the bots with the VERY REAL passwords your copy pasted.

try logging in with those passwords! i dare you!

Count me as a flag.

He didn't even have to wait for a flag, you know.

ADMIN ABUSE!
If it'll help, I'll retroactively flag it too and then it won't be admin abuse.

you do the jobs of the ones that don't do their jobs no? that makes you close enough.

I know I am not a super hardcore visitors here, but site has been feeling snappier than it used to
-
It's usually not too bad, depending on which threads you're reading. Long threads are still feeling quite a bit slower to me. (Threads with lots of images/embeds are worse, but that might not be entirely Discourse's fault.) At least it's not blocking waiting for some dog slow ad server! (Seriously, those are much more annoying than almost anything short of a cootiestorm.)
-
Weekends tend to be pretty responsive due to the dropoff in activity.
-
Woot.
It's gone from taking 8 seconds to load my notifications after I hit the speech bubble icon down to 6.
Of course, in software that didn't suck ass, that number would be zero seconds. But hey, I guess the solution to tolerating Discourse is to lower your expectations faster than the Discourse developers can fix their shit. (Which is bound to happen, since they never actually fix their shit.)
Because right now, my expectations could not be lower.

oh look, markdown list numbering STILL BROKEN.
Of course part of this is just how the web works now. Nobody gives a shit. You just come to expect, say, YouTube will randomly decide I speak Spanish or French sometimes. It just happens. Shrug! There's no quality software left anywhere.
