    As long as you've got a backpack big enough for it, you're fine.

    if you need a backpack to lug it around you are already beyond the " toss it in the bag and go" weight. that makes it desktop replacement class for me. it's technically mobile but you have to plan for it rather than grabbing it and rolling with what's happening.

    You don't necessarily notice it on a fast machine, but lots of people complain about it. (Yes, I was specifically talking about Minecraft, although it probably happens in other games. As far as I know it hasn't been fixed yet. Maybe Microsoft will make them do that.)

    A backpack is a bag. QED.

    Perhaps you're just a wimp. 😛 I mean, I used to take it with me places, and use it at the park, the airport, etc. You're only talking about a few extra seconds.

  • FoxDev

    if you habitually bring a backpack with you everywhere i guess.

    i ususally go bagless, or if i carry a bag it's a courier bag that's very lightly loaded.

    i do not enjoy bringing an 8+lb laptop anywhere in that arrangement

  • That sounds like something that would need to be designed well.

    Well, I certainly got into the habit of it after I got that laptop. It wasn't that big a deal--I used a backpack to carry my books around in high school, because I rode a bike to get there, and that's easier to bike with than a duffel bag.

    @accalia said:

    Very plus. I think with the spare battery, the charger, the backpack itself, it was about 14. But I'm not a wimp, as I said, so it wasn't a big deal. The major thing to think of, actually, is that the straps have plenty of padding.

    Yes. Yesyesyesyes. (s4 mini)

    this is why smart people buy AOSP phones.

    Exactly. I'm on my second Nexus phone (Nexus 6).
    No crapware, unlocked from the factory, and first phones to get the latest Android version.

    Well, there was the time KitKat included a bunch of HP Printing garbage that you couldn't get rid of.

    was that AOSP? i had kitkat since practically day 1 on my nexus and i never noticed that...

    :wtf:

    what device were you running that had that added in?

  • @accalia said:

    i'm willing to bet you could with minimal effort fit all your permanent data withing 256 or even 126GB (including OS and programs)

    :rofl: I need several versions of Visual Studio installed. It's hard to upgrade a major product otherwise. And because of git, I may need several copies of the depot if I want to work on several bugs concurrently and separately. Unless I want to commit / checkout / recompile-the-whole-fucking-world / rinserepeat. (I currently have 69G free of 223. With over 400G farmed out to external USB drives - most of that are various VMs for testing - which suck on external, but no choice.)

  • @accalia said:

    You're talking a work laptop while i'm talking about a mobile laptop, something suitable for light to medium development in an environment where total weight is more important than raw power.

    Ah - missed that. In that case, ok. I still want the biggest drive I can get though.

  • FoxDev

    @dcon said:

    several versions of Visual Studio

    i always forget how big that is....

    right, although to be fair if you're in an environment where you need multiple versions of vistual studio at the same time you are probably in a work for pay sort of environment so the implied personal devicce clause would not apply.

    Still, a valid point.

    @dcon said:

    why don't you branch? just switch branches between bugfixes and you should be good to go. so long as you recompile master after a merge and always branch after a good build you should be golden. unless i'm missing something about your setup?

  • It was the official OTA KitKat update on Nexus 4. The Google Play page for the app got spammed with 1-star reviews from people who were upset about having it pre-installed and non-removable.

  • @accalia said:

    Usually I do. But that means full recompile. :twiddlethumbs: 20 minutes later... So if I need to work on 2 things (emergency hot fix and current dev), there's a significant overhead in switching. git is just not designed to work on 2 different branches concurrently.

  • Just have 2 local repos? I mean, just clone it down I to two different folders. It's clearly expensive in disk space, but waiting 20 minutes is insane..

    Umm, because my disk isn't big enough? (Ok, I could right now, but god help me when windows update kicks in...)

    does it mount flush with the case? does it take up a USB port?

    if then answers are No and Yes then it's not a replacement for the SD card slot and furthermore even if it was that's no excuse for the manufacturer to not include the fulsize slot or just take it on the chin and use the microsd slot.

    While not disagreeing with you, those nano-sized devices are pretty nice and usually fire-and-forget. I used a BT dongle for a long time, and several of my coworkers have the Logitech proprietary wireless mouse adapters that are about that size, and you can just bung your laptop in a bag and go. The only way you really might have a problem is if you banged the thing hard into a doorframe, which you can usually prevent from happening by not being a klutz and/or unlucky. 😄

  • @accalia said:

    Flush enough that it's unlikely to get knocked out of place by accident, and yes. Not as good as a native μSD slot but IME much better than any μSD to SD adapter I've ever used. Cheap, too.

    The way the designers found space for the μSD card inside the USB plug itself appeals to me.

    in a world where not every computer has a bluetooth card that's fine, but when your proprietary adaptor is basically list pre paired bluetooth with some chips in the adaptor to make it look lime a mouse to the computer there's really no excuse in my book to not let me connect via BT. This is another pet peeve of mine.

    USB ports on laptops are scarce and when i need one for the external mouse (and/or keyboard) one for the SD reader, one for some other dongle.... i start running out of ports fast, if i didn't with just the two. Your 15+" laptops might come with 4+ ports standard, but my ultraportable <13" oens don't.

    I only mentioned what kind of adapters they were so you wouldn't wonder what "we used a bunch of nano-usb wireless adapters" were, but carry on with your side rant.

    Not wanting to use up a USB port wasn't in your original complaint, O mover of :moving_goal_post:s. 😛

    "we used a bunch of nano-usb wireless adapters"

    there's only one company i know that uses those in sufficient quantity to warant that. i use them at work myself because for all my annoyance they make the best trackball out there that costs less than my car.

    @FrostCat said:

    thank you. i will. :-P but later, not right now.

    @FrostCat said:

    why's that relevant? my complaint is not about using the USB port, i have multiple SD card readers that can do the job. it's about the manufacturers getting the idea that it's acceptable to put Full size SD card slots on devices but not have them fit a full-fullsize SD card. that makes the slot absolutely worthless for anything resembling long term use. all it's good for is emptying a card from your camera.

    but yes, as a side rant to my original rant expecting me to sacrifice, semi-permanently, a USB port when i already have too few USB ports is also a pet peeve of mine and i will rant about it!

    @FrostCat said:

    O mover of :moving_goal_post:s.

    no, the original goalpost is right where i left it. i merely erected a second set of goalposts for a different game that just happens to be playing on the same pitch at the same time and with the same ball as the existing game. ;-)

  • I just want a SIM card slot on my Surface Pro 4 when I buy one.

    oh christ. I've never heard of obj files being checking in. That is one serious :wtf:

  • FoxDev

    we migrated from SVN and over time a lot of bin/ and obj/ folders were added. i keep meaning to go around and nuke them from the repo but i havent had time yet.

  • @accalia said:

    Obviously those designers only use computers, so that is the only use. We're the ones who abuse it by needing more storage than they know we need.

    no. just no.

    Is exactly why I love my OnePlus. Comes with a modified CyanogenMOD and can take a stock image as well.
    Not even GApps (GMail, Google Store, ...) installed by default (at least on mine, they might have changed it since).

    As clean as Android can get without building it yourself, I suppose.

    That's exactly the reason why I love my Fairphone.

    Stock AOSP or AOSP with slight customizations by Fairphone themselves (which are quite nice and unobtrusive).
    No GApps installed by default, but it's a 2 tap operation if you want them.

    Rooted by default, their motto is "If you can't open it, you don't own it" and that applies to both the hardware and the software.

    The phone is quite popular with the XDA community and IIRC CyanogenMod has been ported to it.

    I actually got an invite to a OnePlus last year but I couldn't discern if it works on Sprint's network or not, so I assumed it wouldn't, rather than spend $300 to verify that.

    I tried that and for whatever reason didn't find a definitive answer. Now, I do see, as you allude, that it doesn't. I would like to have gotten one but i'm not going to switch back to AT&T, because AT&T has miserable performance in my office.
