    The same argument should apply though, if C:\Users\Jaloopa is read only but I have write access to all the subfolders then nothing should be affected in terms of basic login. Dunno what you managed to screw up in your VM though

    What do you actually want to happen? Start with a pre-configured read-only profile which is cleaned every time you logon? Because that's what Mandatory profiles are for.

    You did something other than what you said you did. Probably what Jaloopa mentioned, you set read-only on the AppData/Roaming folder.

    Remember, in NT, child folders don't (necessarily) inherit permissions from their parent folders.

    C:\Users\Jaloopa\NTUSER.DAT -- that's what'll break, and I suspect it'll break horribly if not for Windows realizing it will and doing something sane, like creating a temporary profile.

    Because it's not on the local filesystem, it's on a fileserver that the Windows user has read-only access to. The fileserver had read-only for all the Windows users because it was the "old" fileserver that was longer being used to store documents (the Documents folder was redirected to another server that was read/write) but for some reason (probably laziness) they didn't also redirect the Username folder to the new file server.

    I concede that's a uncommon thing to do, but it's also 100% valid in Windows. And software written to the OS contract, instead of the "works on my machine!" contract, worked fine.

    None of this changes my point: if an application writes files in that folder, it's a bug. EVEN IF Windows fails to log on in that case, that doesn't make it not-a-bug.

    I believe when Roaming's enabled, that's in AppData, but I could be wrong. Honestly, I'm not sure. But it works; I used a computer set up that way for months, and it worked fine.

  • Another thing which made me :wtf:

    This thing has a vmdk image of several MB and for some reason it's duplicated in /home/.lgsdkTvregistery and the installation folder I choose.

    It also contains a JRE folder... twice... one for the emulator and another for the IDE which is a custom Eclipse that won't work and I don't want to waste more time with this today.

    Resetting the emulator is accomplished by copying the VMDK from the installation folder to the SDK's "user account's" folder, overwriting the existing copy.

And suddenly, people are sitting here in forums posting things like, "well your configuration was slightly unusual, therefore you should have expected things to break." WHAT THE FUCK!

    Look, like I've said a half-dozen times, you can do whatever the fuck you want on your own machine. Just be aware that what you've done is a bug, and when you move that software to another computer it's likely it'll break. If you even aware it's a bug, that (sadly) puts you in probably the top 25% of Windows programmers.

    CSIDL_APPDATA

    Since you store your files (theoretically) in Documents, Dropbox should also use that.
