Closed Poll: Do you have Discourse Syndrome
-
See @faoileag, I told you you was holding it wrong.
But I don't want to view web pages in landscape mode :-(
-
Discourse is unusable on mobile! Per your advice I turned my device around but now the text is unreadable.

Turn it 90° clockwise, then you should see "nexus".
@codinghorror: see, I can learn!

No repro, I'm seeing snxeu.
Edit: ah, clockwise, got it now.

but getting a lot of stuff basic stuff done is a bit of a chore
Such as posting? You're doing fine, I think.

Ah, thought at first you might be used to one of these.

Oh, I can do it. It just takes more effort than I think should be necessary in this day and age.
-
I don't like it, but I'm having fun with it.
If that makes any sense.

Do you dance while posting? Prepare a three-course meal?I mean, I click Reply, and type something and hit Reply. That's basically what I do everywhere.

For example collecting everything @boomzilla said in the course of a flame war, so I don't get accused of putting words on his keyboard.

But doesn't that mean you exceed MAX_POST_SIZE if you want to post it?

You could try a different keyboard. There is even an invisible one.

You could try a different keyboard.
Not too sure what the fuss is about myself - I seem to manage:
Screenshot from another topic - about symbols by the looks of it - of how I normally use it
Though if I wanted to get silly, I can have my keyboard go from:
to
Edit:
Attempt to get them all side by side in order of
Normal | Max | Min

Hmm - before I file a bug report - do images 1 to 3 on my last post seem to be the same size as images 4 to 6 to anyone else?
1-3 should be 100% size, 4-6 should be 33%
All seem to be 33%.
-
So that should have been @JustDoIt then
Why do I read that as JustDolt? Is it fair to call someone an idiot for wearing laces?

When you offer 50px of usable vertical space in landscape orientation, I would say Android is the real wtf here.
I don't have the devices to test, but I would bet you get the same experience on an iPhone or Windows phone, so you can't blame this on a phone OS. The phone's are operating with limited resources. If you want your software to be usable on a mobile system, it's your job to figure out how.
-
Speaking of doing it wrong, do you really feel it is necessary to manually quote the image directly under the post above, which contains the very same image, literally 100px above? What does this redundant duplication achieve other than needlessly pushing your reply text down?
How was he to know someone else wasn't going to post while he was composing his reply? he was making sure the context was available in his post. Stop being an ass.
-
Indeed you can. Or you can rotate the device.
You have no right to tell forum members how to use their phones. It is up to you to make sure that Discourse is available in every scenario.

He tells people how they should talk with each other, he tells people how they should open threads, he tells people what is and is not on topic for a thread and moves posts around, telling people how they should use their phones is just consistency.

Shall I eat him?

Done.

Here's the link, also, to revisit me getting the "first", ha, first vote.

What's with the empty space between the top of the keys and the top of the keyboard?
That gets populated with autocomplete suggestions when you type something in. It's particularly useful when you're using gesture typing and the keyboard guesses wrong at what you was typing.
why is the address bar not automatically hidden in cases like this?
Both are valid points. If only the Chrome development team asked themselves these questions. It'd be super useful if the address bar was hidden when the keyboard is up.
-
It's available in landscape on Android — it's just going to be a bad time because when the keyboard is invoked it's always a bad time because everyone playing on the platform only has 50px to work with. You are free to have a bad time if you're determined to have a bad time.
The only improvements I'm seeing that would do anything to improve the horizontal phone experience would be to toss the buttons on the right of the editor (making the text area less wide) and remove most of the padding. You will then have a customized bad time.

Discourse is for the new generation of internet user. The ones who have threads maybe 30 posts long if they try. Also, you're supposed to use the 'Reply as new topic' and suchlike to create new threads, instead of replying in the same thread if your reply is on a tangent to the OP. That's @codinghorror's intent for it, anyway.
Discourse is great for users with ADD that need to hey let's go ride bikes!

I have not yet experienced a reason to think that infiniscroll is worse for longer threads. It's length-agnostic, near as I can tell. Maybe my usage is too simple?

Isn't that equally true for short threads as long ones?

It's easier to know where you are in a short thread. Only 20 posts? I know that I'm most likely less than a minute from finishing the thread. But if I'm in the middle of a 200+ post thread, I don't know if I'm near the beginning or end while I'm skimming through it, not until I completely remove my vision from what I was focused on.

And that doesn't even work in a thread that's got 1000+ posts:
That's post 1205 out of how many?

The really funny part is that invariably I turn a phone to landscape when typing because I have big fat fingers and most of the phone keyboards are too small in portrait. I suspect I am not alone.

Go here. Without going to the top or bottom of the page, tell me how much more of that topic you have left to read. Failure will result in me eating you.
Ready? Go!

Very good. But a barrier to reading.

Also, most users will not know how to use the Developer Tools. -1 for discoverability.
