And less time in
more
?more
doesn't have-R
which I use a lot inless
. (Or if it does I haven't expended the effort to find out how to invoke the same functionality.)
-
I don't use
-R
so maybe my quick comparison isn't right, but it seems (on our version at least) thatmore
behaves likeless -R
and there's a flag to makemore
behave likeless
does by default.

I thought you compiled less.
I didn't compile less, but looks like someone did:
$ less /usr/bin/less "/usr/bin/less" may be a binary file. See it anyway?
Are you saying less is compiled into inefficient css?
Well, the first little bit doesn't look like what I'd call efficient CSS. What do you think?

if I press Ctrl+F that's because I want my browser's search UI come hell or high water
Doing It Wrong™, use F3.
-
but it seems (on our version at least) that more behaves like less -R
hmm - does here now... Unless I'm misremembering why I use what I use.
I'll still probably use
less
out of habit anyway.

more
is pretty feature poor. From the man page on my system:DESCRIPTION more is a filter for paging through text one screenful at a time. This version is especially primitive. Users should realize that less(1) pro‐ vides more(1) emulation plus extensive enhancements.

I wonder if there are technical reasons why
less
didn’t simply replacemore
when it was developed (likevim
replacedvi
).
After allless
can be used as the default$PAGER
...
-
UNIX beards who like to kick it old school most likely.
On Solaris 10 at least,
vi
is still default rather thanvim
.
-
I occasionally use
more | cat
ormore | less
when I want to dump multiple files with filename indications inbetween.
-
The hell?
Ok, that's not what generally happens.

They didn't want to break existing scripts that used
more
. Oh, you probably wanted a good reason. Never mind....

Still does, actually. Try using it in Chrome on Windows!
That reminds me: My dad still uses ShiftIns to paste text.
Even on Windows 7.

That reminds me: My dad still uses ShiftIns to paste text.
so do i. because that works in WIN and in linux and i don't have to context switch between the two if i use it.

That keystroke just ends up screwing me over with my fat fingers.
-
-
My pinky fingers usually rest on the shift key, because of my gamer habits.
So my right hand leans over to press insert for whatever reason, and my left pinky reacts and pushes down.
-
hmm... i can see how that would be annoying to paste when you didn't want to paste...

And again.... Jeff misses the point.
So.... fix my bug with codemonkey and piss off.
Is he taking cues from Jobs? Am I holding it wrong?
-
-
Oh no, I'm not new here.
And I'm not new to how often Jeff maintains this attitude.I'm also a regular on Stack Overflow. Same principle there too.

-
What part am I missing out on.
Jeff can do no wrong?
Everything that is wrong is an illusion?
Culture is toxic?
I haven't been New Here for a very long time. That doesn't change my desire to vent.

You're Doing It Wrong and you're New Here.
I never said you were doing it wrong or were new here.
