2016÷768 pre-new year resolutions
-
I had these, handed down from various family members before my first proper (read: Windows) PC.
-
I also had a BBC Model B at some point:
-
There is a natural law that says that sooner or later nerds will start comparing who has used the most arcane hardware.
this was my first computer, brand new from the factory.
-
I remember playing Podd on a BBC Micro at primary school, especially typing
Podd Can Explode
a lot.
Although until Google helped me out, I was sure that it was called Pop but I guess remembering 21+ years back is never too reliable.
-
Hey, we had one of those! They were crap for programming with their rubber keys and six or seven key chords wired to every key, so we only really used it to play games on...

That's because Podd Can Pop!

When I was about 8, I borrowed a tape from my friend which had Elite on it. I gave him the tape back after loading the game, so I had no way to reload it. I left my Spectrum on for about the next whole week, so I could continue being a space trader. It got very hot. On an unrelated note, it stopped working some time later.

My first 'real' computer:
Got a BBC B, then BBC Master after that.
School got a classroom of 14 networked BBC B's.
Ended up writing a few (slightly dodgy) utilities after I got my hands on the documentation for the network:
largely revolving around remotely controlling someone else's computer...
-
Recently I got to check out the new Elite game and it's pretty cool.

I haven't read the rest of the topic yet, but the first thing I thought of when I saw the title1 is this decrepit old desktop from — yikes, it's even older than I thought — the timestamp on \Documents and Settings\All Users is 9/15/2003 11:18 PM.
Resolution: Buy a new computer.
1 Currently "2015 new year resolutions (and PC nostalgia)." Preserved for posteri
orty, because you know someone will change it, and this post will no longer make sense.

the timestamp on \Documents and Settings
The fact that that folder exists tells you it's an old computer.

I knew that. I was thinking it was probably almost 10 years old, when in fact it's 11 and a few months. It's still running XP, and probably isn't capable of running anything newer. Even if it can run 7, it would be more cost-effective to buy a new one.
-
Not to forget, the thermal inefficiency of Pentium4-era chips ...
-
This time of year, an extra space heater is welcome. :)

My mother-in-law just told me that the people who live above them have taken a dislike to them and hoped to force them to move out instead of renewing their lease (unfortunately she had already done so) so they started opening all their windows and wearing heavy clothes. The idea, I gather, was that by leaving the apartment at ambient temps (27°F this morning!) my MIL would not be able to keep her apartment at a reasonable temp. Unfortunately the office manager came by to talk to my MIL the other day and experienced this, so she went upstairs and told them that if they caused any pipes to burst, they would pay for the entire building to be repaired. These people will probably get themselves evicted before they convince the MIL to leave.

Changed the thread title as follows:
2015
x×768 new year resolutionsLet's hope it sticks.
-
tempted to edit the title now.
i wasn't till you said something, but now...... :-P
-
I'm only counting Discobugs as "not sticking", not anything any person does on purpose.
-
oh. not tempted anymore.

The ZX-81 was a little bit earlier. 1986 was the era of the ZX-Spectrum (only available in a 48kB RAM model at that point) and its rival the Commodore 64.

The first computer my family had was an Apple IIe, I believe. I was probably not even in kindergarten yet. I remember it having some silly dust cover that we put over it when it was not on. It also had the noisiest dot matrix printer that was ever made.
First computer that really got me interested was a nondescript beige box computer with Windows 3.1. I did all my homework on it after we got it and it had a laser printer that would dim the lights in the office when you sent a print job as it was probably pulling 15A to get the fuser warmed up and it made the whole basement wreak of toner.
That was also the one and only printer I have had a toner cartridge come apart on me while changing it. IIRC, there was a big dark spot on the office floor after that. Nasty stuff.

Beat me to it. Reading the rest of the post before pointing out spelling errors is a barrier to spellar badges.

<small>(Common misspelling)
Is it a misspelling? "Wreak" is an actual word, so IMHO it's more of a word substitution. I might be persuaded otherwise.

You wreak havoc, but reek of onions. I believe.
-
rather wreak pendantry attempt, no?

They were correct. I was wrong.

Great, can we let this thread die already? Most 2015 resolutions have already gone down the drain by now, even the ones about not being grammar nazis.
-
Ok, blakey...

That's mean

Most 2015 resolutions have already gone down the drain by now, even the ones about not being grammar nazis.
ok. let's talk about 2016 resolutions then. ;-)
-
But I have to start them now or wait until Jan. 1st?
-
But I have to start them now or wait until Jan. 1st?
hmm... how about we commit to starting them on january 1st but inevitably break them irevocably before then so we need to choose new ones come december?
-
My apologies, I should not use such language in polite company.
-
OK, I'll start: Don't add a "2016 Resolutions" topic.
-
But I have to start them now or wait until Jan. 1st?
How about Chinese new year's resolutions? That's coming up, right?

That reminds me: the time for a new "Keep Calm" avatar is almost at hand. Considering this one:

Are you using radiation to keep the haters at bay, or do they hate radiation?

Not sure but I don't care as long as it works.

This seems like a conversation in Chinglish.

Wok you say?

You wan' super fun bliss combo? Egg rows? D'ink?
I feel like we have intentionally crossed the threshold to racism now...feeling a bit uncomfortable.
-
That's why I left it at one word that's borderline a pun and could legitimately be a question where misunderstanding of language could occur.
