Is Uber the *worst* .com currently?
-
It's definitely in the running, if not top-dog:
This is the company that paid its employees to create and cancel thousands of fake appointments with a rival. In fact... just click all of the links in the top few paragraphs. Uber is awful.
-
Uber is awful.
Of course, taxi monopolies suck too, but in a different way.
Sure would be nice if people could just not be awful.
-
Sure would be nice if people could just not be awful.
I'd like people more if 90% of them didn't need to just go away.
-
BTW here's the Buzzfeed, a little bit "more authorative" as it comes from the journalist who actually heard the threats first-hand:
-
Sounds like the guy is frustrated with journalists. The buzzfeed article sounded a lot more balanced than the pando chick. I guess I'd have to dig into all the other stuff before being able to form a real opinion.
-

#Ubergate
This is about ethics in ride sharing journalism!
-
#Ubergate
I'm actually interested in this, as I know someone who recently started driving for them.
-
You misogynist! Label is now worthless.
-
The buzzfeed article sounded a lot more balanced than the pando chick.
That's because he was a more-or-less neutral observer.
The "pando chick" learned about it when the Buzzfeed reporter called her to get a comment on it for his article. Since she was the one being personally targeted by this hypothetical $1 million/8 employee task force, she was understandably pretty upset.

Right, but how many execs have said something similar about a journalist? I'm sure many politicians have. And they do it out in the open. The difference is about how serious they are about it, and her hysteria, where I couldn't even tell what the threats to her and her kids were.
I started following links in the article, but a lot of them weren't even about Uber, so after a point I gave up. She came across to me as a tin foil hatter in her basement. "Pando" had never breached my consciousness before, so her article and her links was all I had to go from.
-
Right, but how many execs have said something similar about a journalist?
That's really the most shocking thing about this: how stupid this guy is.
I'm sure lots of them have. They generally don't do it IN FRONT OF ANOTHER JOURNALIST.
The difference is about how serious they are about it, and her hysteria, where I couldn't even tell what the threats to her and her kids were.
The Buzzfeed journalist thought it was serious, obviously. or he wouldn't have posted the article about it.
and her hysteria, where I couldn't even tell what the threats to her and her kids were.
The Buzzfeed article mentions one specific fact about her this "task force" would have been able to positively obtained, although he's classy enough to not repeat what that fact is. But the very fact that Michael mentioned it is pretty damning. He's outright saying, "we suspect (embarassing thing) and this task force will get evidence so we can use it for blackmail". Not in as many words.
She came across to me as a tin foil hatter in her basement.
Read the Buzzfeed article, I should have posted it first. I'm kind of coming into this particular piece of news ass-first as well.
-

Agreed. I think the key will be if they fire the guy soon (the obvious move).
-
Cheap cab rides and quite convenient, there are similar competing services such as hailo in my area.
-
Uber changes their privacy policy to say they won't look at driver or customer information except for legitimate business purposes.
Uber executives consider hiring a team of 8 people to follow reporters around and blackmail them as "legitimate business".
-
Not read the article because trying to actually do something resembling work, but is the "and attack women" part really relevant/necessary, or is it there to bait clicks? "Uber silences journalists!" is news. "Uber silences journalists and is mysogynist!" starts sounding like paranoia.
I'll have to look into this though: Uber recently (like, last week), opened up service in my city.

Uber changes their privacy policy to say they won't look at driver or customer information except for legitimate business purposes.
Talk about a sensational article, though. I mean...you gave the company the information. If you expect them never to use it, why would you give it to them? If you follow the link, they give actual examples:
* Supporting riders and drivers in order to solve problems brought to their attention by the Uber community. * Facilitating payment transactions for drivers. * Monitoring driver and rider accounts for fraudulent activity, including terminating fake accounts and following up on stolen credit card reports. * Reviewing specific rider or driver accounts in order to troubleshoot bugs
Which is the sort of thing you'd expect.
Uber executives consider hiring a team of 8 people to follow reporters around and blackmail them as "legitimate business".
Eh, more sensational reporting, but at least it's only at TDWTF, where we all bullshit.
-
Here's a glowingly pro-Uber article that contains the line “By now, Uber is used to ignoring rules.”
Certainly, some of the regulations Uber is struggling against are absolutely awful, however, Uber is not the only company fighting those regulations. From what I've read today, it seems Uber is only the front runner because it is the most brazen in its willingness to flout the laws. And if someone is willing to break one set of laws, spmething tells me they will be willing to break another. If I were you I'd tell your friend not to trust Uber any further than your friend can throw them.
-
And if someone is willing to break one set of laws, spmething tells me they will be willing to break another.
That's certainly possible. I was largely calling bullshit on blakey, who likes to put tinfoil on people who are skeptical about the NSA collecting information for the Feds, a proven abuser of the citizenry and law breaker (and whose executives have said far worse things than what the Uber dude said).
-
But if the goal is pursuit of ethics and the group whose ethics are in question involves women, it's obviously misogynist. No one could possibly not hate women if they call into question the ethics of a group that includes women. Doesn't everyone know that?
-
and is mysogynist!
It's the new "you have to be a racist if you criticize a black person!" Well, it wants to be, but it's not getting as much traction.
-

The War on Women preceded it and spoiled our appetite for certain ways to dismiss certain opinions.

True. Although I think GamerGate is actually helping to defang it too, with gamers refusing to let wild accusations of "you sexist pig" simply end the conversation.

I won't argue with that except to say that GamerGate is super recent and only a tiny fraction of people have any clue about it.

sad, that. more people should know about stuff like that, instead we're getting updates on how big [famous person of the hour]'s latest shit was.....
and this is from the major news outlets!
(yeah i'm exagerating a fair bit, but still)
-
I don't think that's exaggerated at all, unfortunately.
Like how Kim K.'s ass shot was more important than landing a probe on a freakin' comet.
-
The Steam group still sends out messages whenever things happen, and I assume Milo is still around. I've mostly started ignoring the messages, because while I support the boycotts, they aren't very interesting.
It hasn't affected me very much so far. If I was the kind of person who comments on the Mighty No. 9 forum, I might be pretty mad now. I did try posting something on Inafune's blog to try to get some sort of message out of him, because Dina won't let anything through otherwise, but my Japanese is awful, and I don't think ANY comments get through there. I'm still not too worried about how the game will turn out, but I'm a bit horrified that you can lose the forum access you paid for by mentioning GG at all.
-

It's more a function of the fact that our society is very multi-faceted. It's a very rare thing that includes a large proportion of people, and video games definitely don't fit that. Bottom line, whatever your think everyone knows about, they probably don't, including all the celebrity gossip.
and this is from the major news outlets!
But again, how many people are paying attention to them? And not relatively, compared to each other, but as a proportion of people.
Like how Kim K.'s ass shot was more important than landing a probe on a freakin' comet.
I'll be honest, a picture of her ass is more likely to affect my life than a comet landing, which is still pretty cool.
-

Yeah, that's why I said "too" instead of "instead".

Back on topic (OMG!)
-
They have a lot of fun with data.
-
Although I think GamerGate is actually helping to defang it too, with gamers refusing to let wild accusations of "you sexist pig" simply end the conversation.
I'm fairly sure the only net result has been to frustrate gamers. If anything, gamergate has made the situation worse, not better.
-
Interestingly, my wife just brought GG up, and she thought it was all about asshole gamers sending death threats to women. I blame the hysterics in her facebook feed. We've often noticed a big difference between hers and mine.
-
. I blame the hysterics in her facebook feed. We've often noticed a big difference between hers and mine.
there be a reason or two why i left facebook....
now G+ isn't much better but it is better (just a bit)

-
Its especially bad, considering it all started with women harassing men. They keep trying to tell everyone the opposite.
-
Why is Gamers Gate in here, I hate you all. I disown this thread.
-
That's what you get when you bring up questionable ethics.
We'll happily talk about the real issues once you stop being such a misogynist. Actually, all misogynists should just go die.
This response seems to always work.
-
Like how Kim K.'s ass shot was more important than landing a probe on a freakin' comet.
Because it's physically bigger than a comet.

I'm not motivated enough to make the Lion King/what is that dark place/Kim K's butt meme, but I'm chuckling just thinking about it.
-
but is the "and attack women" part really relevant/necessary
It's the new "you have to be a racist if you criticize a black person!"
You guys are dummies. Uber is willing to attack people; that much we can gather from the fact that they discussed attacking someone. Now as to the question of whether Uber is willing to attack anyone, or just women, go ahead and believe what you want – neither option acceptable.
Do you not realize that you are doing the exact same thing that you're complaining about: there are legitimate problems here, but instead of actually reading tf article and coming to a sensible concusion, you're just yelling ‘misandry’ and running around like a headless chicken.
-
I don't think it's all that clear-cut. It's never all that clear-cut.
Always follow the money.
Now as to the question of whether Uber is willing to attack anyone, or just women, go ahead and believe what you want – neither option acceptable.
Exactly - Neither option is acceptable. But neither is tacking on an allegation of misogyny because the person targeted in this instance just so happens to be a woman. It's histrionics.
-
you're just yelling ‘misandry’ and running around like a headless chicken.
I'm not doing that. I don't even care about uber. I'm having a meta conversation, I'm not an MRA or a feminist.
-
Always follow the money.
What, that some of pando's investors also invested in lyft? That was already covered in the original article: pando also shares investors with uber. You're such a dummy.
It's histrionics.
You're histrionics. I don't care if some socialite finds themself in the middle of a political scandal – that's what they do. And making wild accusations is what sells page views. A sensible person just tunes that shit out, and focuses on what's important: Uber is the fucking worst.
I'm not an MRA
MRAs always say that.
