I totally forgot what jobless life is like
-
It's like 11:00 and I'm already kind of done with anything on my list today. Huh.
-
So did you quit or get fired from your tiny cubicle?
-
Now you've got all that time for
jermastwhacreading.
-
I was a contractor, so we "mutually agreed" to cut the contract short.
Somewhere in-between. Not really a firing, not really me quitting. (Honestly, I'd have rather stayed there a few more weeks to finish a project that would have been a great resume blurb, but manager says no, so.)
-
So going youtube full time then?
-
some people make a living of of doing lets plays of video games...
worth a shot. I've always wondered what a TDWTFer would make of Youtube's content management system. (and never dared to try myself)
-
To be fair, while blakeyrat does do Let's Plays, I would totally dig a Review/Rant-Show of his!
Just imagine, the full glory of a blakeyrant without the annoying hassle of reading.I am pretty sure, though, that youtube-content-creator
a) does not pay nearly as much as blakey gets when he does a real job
b) does not give him the satisfaction of actually doing something worthwhile (something he complained about with his last job, afair)
c) is a very insecure job due to being bound to youtubes wishes and suchFiled Under: His persona and rants are kind of reminicent of old Game-Reviewers, wouldn't you say?
-
I'd watch a @blakeyrat rant and review show. heck i'd watch it with pre-roll adds unsuppressed
a) true, but that doesn't seem to stop them. although guude (a mindcraft LPer) does claim to bring in over $300 per video he releases in the first month (and he releases one pretty much every weekday and most weekends)
might be boasting, but if not daaaaaaaaang.
b) no argument there
c) well there is that. yeah not very secure in the long term.
-
youtube. lets plays.
This is grand news. I want a link! <3
-
Watching, or producing?

It's impossible unless you remove all dignity and appeal to 12-year-olds wasting time during Algebra class.

Not sure if serious but:

See if these appeal:

(Awful audio, sorry)

I also did a 3-part stream on Kerbal:

Shockingly, Discourse can put more than one YouTube video in a post without shitting itself now.
-
You sound so much more cheerful than I thought you would.
And you do remind me a bit of Jesse Cox. Don't hate me for that
Dungeon defenders!!
I loved that one.
-
Dungeon defenders!!
I loved that one.
Haha you probably shouldn't watch the RITN episodes on it then. Because it (the game) is shit.
-
oooh I like ranty episodes... I can giggle about that. I am a big fan of TB just because his rage makes me happy. XD
-
And I will forever imagine you as a dark skinned guy with white hair (and inexplicably dark eyebrows) now blowing into the mike

As of July 2009, the site earns more than $10,000 per month in advertising revenue and has received more than $11,000 in online donations, with the company expecting to earn $150,000 by the end of the year. In the third quarter of the 2009 Fiscal year, Walker's shows earned $53,000, including $32,000 from the Nostalgia Critic alone. This revenue was generated by run of network from Puma and Starburst.[3][4][5][9] The success of his shows has allowed Walker to make a living performing and to quit his previous job as an illustrator, as well as pay the salary of co-founder/COO Mike Ellis.[3]
Also, this guy, who got $300k for his independent movie via Kickstarter just by ranting about bad games for a few years.
Filed under: review shows rather than let's plays, but it's really the same shit anyway
-
You think Doug Walker retains dignity?
I mean, he comes off better than PewDiePie. But not THAT MUCH better.
-
those PewDiePie ones with Marcia are really the worst brand of shameless pandering.
-
Yeah but those have been around for ... how long?
And AVGN was also part of the whole ScrewAttack ecosystem before it jumped the shark, which also helped him a lot.
-
I couldn't do the bitching/Let's Play thing, I'm too nice and couldn't be natural about it while recorded.
I also couldn't imagine any game I'd want to play that others would want to watch me play, so props to anyone who pulls it off well.
-
perhaps, one of these days I will stream my brand of multilanguage swearing when engaged in PvP. I've been told it's quite funny. But just for you <3
-
That sounds lots of fun

Oh come on. From what I know about PewDiePie, he's basically a pony-loving object of 15-year-old fangirly squeals. Oh, and he also plays games, or something.
Say what you want, but Walker's shows are at least 5 tiers of humor above PDP, even the crappiest ones.
Yeah but those have been around for ... how long?
TGWTG, at the time of Wikipedia article, about two years - AVGN somewhat longer. Well, unless you accidentally become a worldwide meme, gathering viewers takes a while.
And AVGN was also part of the whole ScrewAttack ecosystem before it jumped the shark, which also helped him a lot.
Yeah, well, it's not really surprising that a bit of backing helps.

@blakeyrat, your time is wasted on gaming videos. Any cretin can do those.
You should do technology-based videos. Like take git and try to do something fancy and lose all data. Stuff like that.
Unlike everyone else, who always keep their CV in the corner of their mind, too afraid to offend anyone, you don't have to censor yourself. You can just blast it out and get all the fanboys raging in comments. It would be glorious.
-
You can just blast it out and get all the fanboys raging in comments.
How would that differ from any other video?
-
I have an opening on my team. Contract for the remainder of the year, hire if you aren't fucking awful and can deal with how fucking awful we are at times. If you're in the greater Chicago area, Central Pennsylvania or Minneapolis we have offices (although with the exception of the most outlying Chicago office, we're in such a space crunch that your microcube would be luxuriously private).
Super enterprisey .net and SQL stuff, very tangible and immediate real world impact. You can literally point at physical objects and say "MY SYSTEM MADE THAT HAPPEN!".
Caveats: Our system is heavily insane but we're working on that. Our managers are fucking certifiably insane. Our customers are mildly insane and getting worse all the time. The US government is batshit insane and is driving both our customers and our managers even deeper. The previous guy in this slot literally died. We're running with the assumption that this job literally killed him. I work absurd amounts of overtime because I'm fucking stupid (I try to avoid letting my minions get dragged into that shit but my management has started going around me on that).
-
My company is also hiring (mostly Ithaca, NY and Madison, WI), but I'm fairly confident that blakeyrat wouldn't be interested; it's cross-platform dev mostly in C and C++. Parts of our code base are pretty WTFy, but the work is interesting and we won't drive you into the ground.
-
Way to sell it.

can i listen too? i love a good multilingual swear.
-
Ah. AKA "Monday at Lucent."
You liked that like you don't think I was deadly[1] serious.
[1] See what I did there?
-
Who would watch that?
... why would I want to make that?
Me.
.... the same reason you'd make any YouTube video, I guess? As a sacrifice to your Dark God of Entertainment, building up His strength one impression at a time, until the time comes for the Awakening and this Wicked world REAPS what it has sown?
I don't know why people make videos.

For other folks who may be reading this thread, looking for opportunities (Blakey isn't relocating, so this particular post isn't for him):
We have openings on our team as well, but it's C++/Qt/Linux (for the most part) and also requires a fair amount of political tolerance (to deal with our metaphorically baby-snatching Koboldesque existence at the moment) as well as the ability to travel now and again, and relocate to where this whole transcontinental railroad thing started way-back-when.
On the other hand, once we're in prod, we'll get to say this in spades:
[This system has a] very tangible and immediate real world impact. You can literally point at physical objects and say "MY SYSTEM MADE THAT HAPPEN!".
Caveats: Our system is beyond insane and we are busy piling up carloads of refactoring work in the yard, waiting until we can get a trim crew in there to take care of it all. The vendor we are slowly taking over from is certifiably clueless about programming fundamentals (they're used to wiring relays together, not writing code!). At least we have sane (!) management on this side of the fence, and no need to worry about overtime-absurdity-death-marches (because in our business, that brand of baloney leads to fatal mistakes).
-
a fair amount of political tolerance (to deal with our metaphorically baby-snatching Koboldesque existence at the moment)
I find this to be very intriguing.
-
You liked that like you don't think I was deadly[1] serious.
Upon re-reading this, I realized you have to back up and restart reading 4 words in. This pleases me.
ETA: There's actually a term for this and a fairly canonical example but I CBA to find it. Lazyweb, help me out here.

Next time I'm out of job remind me not to come here asking for any. Damn!
BTW, while I was jobless I made this thing in JavaFX to keep track of the positions I applied for. The application works, and is pretty useful if someone from a job you applied for 2 months ago calls you for an interview. Also, it looks funny because A) I don't care too much about UX B) My personal laptop has a 1024x768 resolution.
-
B) My personal laptop has a 1024x768 resolution.
Are you the mythical World's Last Netbook User?!
-
Next time I'm out of job remind me not to come here asking for any. Damn!
Nah, all jobs are like these. We're just more honest about it on these forums.
-
Nah! It's just that I have an older (circa 2007) laptop and don't care about spending money on a new one and my employer gave me a pretty decent one.

Technical version of (NSFW) RayWilliamJohnson?
RayWilliamJohnson is the worst of the worst. That editing style of cutting every few seconds (which admittedly is mild in this particular video) is even more asinine than the shaky hand camera style in Modern Family.
