Sexy Trust levels are a-changing!

Heads up guys. Looks like most of us will be losing the leader title and becoming "Regular" users instead.

Basic = unchanged
Regular = Member
Leader = Regular
Elder = Leader

As I said before: This obviously means everything else works perfectly so they can focus on small stuff now! We just have to wait until they release their internal perfect version to the world and nobody will be able to complain anymore.
Filed Under: That's how it goes, right? Right?

There are only two hard things in Computer Science: cache invalidation, naming things, and off-by-one errors.

I seem to remember that you posted an entry of your blog somewhere that said that programmers should never design interfaces (and by definition name things).
I dunno, just pointing that out.Is cache invaildation what happens when the avatars on the left don't match the smaller avatars when you replied to somebody?
On a less serious (not that my previous comments were serious, but you get the point) note: Nice to see you guys kinda stuck around. You still only post on Discourse-related stuff but at least it's not strictly "bug here, feature there"-stuff.
Filed Under: Are the Brownies good?
-
is this just a name change?
as long as I still get to put sexy in the titles of threads its all good.
-
Why would anybody want to be identified as a "leader" anyway? According to my college dictionary, a leader is the piece of blank film at the beginning of a reel, or blank tape at the beginning of a cassette, that carries no content.
-
that explains a lot about Leaders in Discourse
Filed Under: You will get a like for that comment!
-
Sorry, WTF IS THIS SHIT.
THIS MAKES NO FUCKING SENSE.

Great, now I can't ever make that joke again. Thanks for nothing, dickweed.

THIS MAKES NO FUCKING SENSE.
I think you are slightly overreacting. They are changing strings. There is not that much magic going on. They aren't even changing much on the forum-software so it could make less sense than before.
Filed Under: Making this a priority on the other hand...
-
This is a stupid change that makes no sense whatsoever and in reality smells very much like the thin end of a wedge where Jeff seems dissatisfied at the way WTDWTF uses Discourse and in particular the 'Leader abuse' we have shown so therefore the software must be broken to prevent us abusing it.
Just because they claim to be changing the title only does not mean that they won't break other things in the process.
-
I think the new names make more sense than the old ones.
-
I think letting the admins of the community set the names they want makes more sense than being held to the whims of the developers.
-

Expecting programming blog authors to follow their own advice is Doing It WrongTM.
-
I assume, possibly incorrectly, that this will override the defaults but if a community changed these titles to something else then their custom titles for the trust levels would stay even after updates?
-
Can the admins actually configure it in the first place?
I get the impression the answer is no because 'why would anyone do that anyway?'
-

I'm not an error, I'm a real boy!
-
I disagree. Would you give 'regular members' unconfigurable moderation powers? Because that's what happens with TL3. They get limited moderation powers that CANNOT BE REVOKED. There's no configuration option to do so. The best suggestion was to raise the criteria for TL3 to be unattainably high and then use other groups to manage it.
-
Thanks for nothing, dickweed.
Wow, some of our users are rubbing off[1] on Arantor. Either that or this site is toxic.
[1] you can take that any way you want it.
-
It's a combination of Jeff's toxic attitude, and the fact that I'm finding my backbone somewhat.

I don't find the changes too bad. The metrics that define the former "Leader" definitely are a better description for a "Regular".However, even the new "Leader" is still misleading. I would keep the original "Elder", and make "Leader" a bdage only. With some special metrics that really define a "Leader", like "created at least 5 topics that generated a minimum of 25 replies each in the last 100 days".

Do as I say, not as I do.
-
Me too. I'd perhaps also switch out Leader to Elder, but whatever. (And why not make the whole thing configurable per-site?)
Filed under: Not a big deal either way
-
I think that @Arantor is using the wrong definition of "regular"
-
They get limited moderation powers that CANNOT BE REVOKED.
until they get revoked automatically because the software decided that you are no longer worthy
p.s. suspensions now demote you, so there is an escape hatch for abusers
-
If you get demoted that way, can you get your "abusive" powers back if you wait for a while?

It's a barrier to having no sockpuppet-account!
-
Filed Under: Nowhere is the Description of Leader does it say "Can't be banned in the last 100 days!" This is madness! (Disclaimer: I assume it doesn't say that. I didn't check!)

I'm not being funny but that's still stupid.

and in particular the 'Leader abuse' we have shown so therefore the software must be broken to prevent us abusing it.
except it's just new naming. Now we can do "Regular" abuses.
which truly makes even less sense, so somehow it fits perfectly.

Why can't we have it be "Sexy Leader"?

Okay, Point goes to you

WAT? Markdown doesn't make sense to me again

Other than that Discourse is using Parsedown 1.0 (acording to the site) that link doesn't really help me.
If anything, it makes even less sense than before.
If you tell me: "Hey \ escapes whatever markdown you write", then I might probably want to escape markdown-elements by using \.Filed Under: Did anybody notice that I am not the biggest fan of markdown?
Addendum: If I think about it long enough the second *Test\** makes sense, since * and ** are different syntaxes but still.... markdown is not my favorite markup language.

Hey \ escapes whatever markdown you write
I've heard this, but it's never worked for me. I buttumed that I had remembered it wrong.

Just noticed:
That will be a thing of the past after the upcoming trust level changes...@Luhmann: may I suggest "just a b*****m" as a new long name then?

Don't worry. You can still be our regular.

Or change it to: "My colon movements are"

I'm not Sheldon.I'm wondering if I should drop a level and have it say "I have a BIG"

Unfortunately I don't think TL1 is important enough to have a title.
I could be wrong though...

Unfortunately I don't think TL1 is important enough to have a title.
Unfortunately not, so I'll have to put away my dream of displaying my BIG member on every post.

I have a BIG Elder?

He has a DONG not a MEMBER. And I'm not claiming it's unnatural or enhanced.

We can also use our trust level to insult other users:
Arantor told me that Luhmann has a disappointingly tiny
For instance.

Hmmm. I do wonder how @Arantor came to that conclusion. He wasn't complaining last night.
