Yet Another Steam Bug: dual-monitors aren't brand new, guyz, it's not hard to cope with them

What's your take on BSD or any other derivation of Linux then?
I don't know anything about BSD, but my take on Linux is pretty similar. Useful when it works and you're on a well-trodden path, madly infuriating in any other case.
-
OS X is built on one of the BSDs, FreeBSD IIRC.

Why am I not surprised...Take something old, put a new coat of paint on it, charge out the anus for it, and have hipsters everywhere frothing at the mouth at how original and groundbreaking it is. It's the Apple way.
-
To be fair, OS X's UI is not terrible. It's been better for me to use than the various attempts I've made to use GNOME, KDE et al over the years.
-
Very true, but it doesn't lend itself to much more than basic web surfing in which case users are really better served by a $350 Dell than a $1500 Macbook.
Source: I was tortured by Xcode and other developer/power user tools on a Mac for about a year.

BSD or any other derivation of Linux
BSD is not a derivation of Linux. BSD dates originally from 1977; Linux wasn't released until 1991. BSD was directly derived from AT&T UNIX. Linux was derived from UNIX only in a broad sense; it is UNIX-like, but developed independently.
-
I actually meant to say "derivation of UNIX, like Linux" but multitasking. While it's independently developed, it's still a derivation in my mind.
@mott555 I wouldn't generally disagree. I find it harder to do what I do on OS X.
-
And yet, it's the same shit.

I'm no expert, but it appears to be not quite that simple. OS X is based on NeXTSTEP, by way of OpenStep. NeXTSTEP was based on Mach. Mach was based on 4.3BSD, and also gave rise to FreeBSD and other derivatives. Or something like that.
-
Speaking of multiple displays, just found out that fglrx (AMD's binary Linux GPU driver) completely shits itself when I plug in an extra monitor.
So, you fix the performance so it's worth to install it, and then fuck up multiple displays? It's always something with those fucking drivers, isn't it?
Now yes, X is a mess, but neither nVidia nor Intel (nor open source radeon driver) seem to have a problem with multiple display setups. I'd guess that means it can be done.

This should make it clear as mud.

TRWTF is we're missing some common emoji.
@PJH, can you add custom ones?
:pjh: balls would be awesome.
-
@PJH, can you add custom ones?
Sadly no. I'd need shell access, and they'd probably have to be a custom addon anyway.
I am, however, working on something a bit more shinier (at least they'll be shiny for a while) awards for posting:

I wonder how many other pieces of forum software don't have this feature.

I'm guessing only every other single Discourse install. At least until my SQL gets a wider audience. Or gets deleted:

I meant the custom :emoji:
-
Ah - dunno. Never looked into that feature on the backend of other forum software.
-
I've never used forum software without it until now.
-
The accursed PHPBB has it, so Discourse never will.
-
Yup, they all have it but most of them have issues around file permissions on the uploading side, as in the server has to be suitably set up for it but that really shouldn't be a chore.

TRWTF is DissedCourse not being able to keep track of which avatar chubertdev is using atm.
-
Captured, since DissedCourse was trying to make a liar out of me.
