. And for the same reason as Jeff.
@codinghorror said:
Great, so now I can get globally dragged in to a conversation like so many "reply to all" emails in the past? cry
Oh, so that's bad, but getting a notification every time someone quotes a rules post he wrote is fine?
Right, but what goes into the post is still just the basic text, which has no way (that we know of) to discriminate between the two. Maybe it goes to both?
As I see it, there's no concept of "group notification" in the backend - it's the frontend that unrolls the group notification into the series of users notifications. So it would go to @PJH himself.
-
No ta. And for the same reason as Jeff.
And anyway, the vast majority of @staff either don't post/read regularly enough or aren't really what you'd consider staff.
Well, I think we're all trained to call for you, since you're by far the most active. If the other guys are ignoring stuff, then they can just continue to ignore these summonses.
Of course, it's classic Jeff:
Yeah, heaven forbid that people have a way to contact you and the rest of similar people. I guess he prefers that people keep pinging him specifically so he can direct traffic to the fish or whomever, instead of those other adults all getting the notifications and being competent to determine what applies to them.
-
Really, it sounds like they created these things for permissions, period, but the name suggests other abuses.

Hmm - I just tried it - @PJH is now a group, but doesn't pop up in the suggestions.
I've set up @testgroup for you to play with for a while... (stop at the second t to see how the suggestion thing works to show both users and groups.)

I get the impression the mentions thing was a thing that was tacked on after the concept in general had been implemented.
-
whoa...OK, I get it now.

That's probably true.

I'd have group aliases use a different character or maybe a double, which gives a clue that something different is going on. @@area_usa
@#area_usa (IRC room name convention)?
-
Solicit away. No.
-
are you sure? I have an assortment of flavoured lubricants?
-
@PJH: I'll take area_usa, please.
-
I'll be in area_usa as well.

Or there's this:
The BaconLube taste test – 03:28
— baconsalt
-
I can get put with the other crazies in @area_usa.
-
I suggest "Team Edward" and "Team Jacob".
Are you a Twi-hard? If so, I better go get by stake & silver bullets.

That was something my first ex did that I approved of. We picked up a cheap copy of the first book from the thrift store, inserted a large wooden stake (imagine a 3-inch diameter tree branch carved into shape) and added sparkly red paint. It was glorious.

Technically, France's flag is on the moon since decades of solar radiation have turned it solid white

It's not a flag, but:

And then, some dumbass uses imperial units in actual space program...
The primary cause of this discrepancy was that one piece of ground software produced results in an "English system" unit, while a second system that used those results expected them to be in metric units. Software that calculated the total impulse produced by thruster firings calculated results in pound-seconds. The trajectory calculation used these results to correct the predicted position of the spacecraft for the effects of thruster firings. This software expected its inputs to be in newton-seconds.

What is the purpose of this? If I join area_gbr can I find a new dealer for my tea habit?
-
I'm sure you can, but the two won't be causally related.

I want US-West

usa_sandiego
?
-
I'll take
carmen_sandiego
please :)
-
I'm not sure where that is.

She just left.

I'm not quite happy enough to make it my new avatar, anyone better at photomanip than me?
-
Put me wherever @faoileag is. He seems like a nice dude to have in a group
Muahahahahaha!
-
Whoops....auto-like strikes. You're welcome!
-
I want @Discourseteam to point to everybody who works on Discourse
Seconded! Especially if someone writes a plugin so that any @Discourseteam mention is forwarded to the respective members on meta.d!

Haven't we had this conversation already?
Those who cannot search are doomed to repeat conversations.
-
And considering we're on Discourse...
-
get ready for a headdesk moment -
user names and group names are two separate namespaces, despite both being prefixed by an @ sign to make them look the same. So if you have a group @PJH containing all my aliases (hmm..) and a user @PJH, which would get notifications?
Not surprised. Fits my theory of how Discourse has been developed:- I want to code in Ruby.
- And I want to use Ember.js!
- Hmmm... a new forum software is way overdue!
- Let's start!
- Coding, I mean!
- Coding takes place.
- Finished!
- Beta testing takes place by TDWTF's community.
- They are doing it wrong!
- Version 1.0!!!

That's kind of pointless. How am I going to solicit intimacy now?
Personal message. Then, when things get interesting, invite everybody else.

I would assume that if you approached @Arantor with a "Hush! But do you have some Darjeeling First Flush? I'll pay any price!" he might be helpful...

We are talking Discourse search here!

I'm sure for the right price I can get you sorted out.

I wonder if I could make @Kuro a dsiciple of TCotCDCK...
Oh, $DEITY, here we go again ...
-
Am liking the 'dsiciple' too. It seems appropriate considering Dicsource.

Wisconsin is in area_usa, right?

Unless the Canadians have been up to something recently, yes.
