Surely that would be your cardinals? Cardinals for counting, ordinals for describing. (The usual way of using cardinals is starting at 0, indicating nothing at all, and ordinals start at 1 — strictly at “first” — because you can't apply them without a non-zero number of entities.)

Hey! I did basic vectors and infinitesimal calculus in the (equivalent of) high school. They were great, as they unified a whole bunch of concepts and reduced the number of ideas I needed to remember about mathematics. He's old enough.

But to be fair, I didn't do PDEs and the ∇ operator until later, let alone path integrals.

Remembering back to when I took Calculus and Physics in HS, many decades ago, Calculus was not a prerequisite for Physics. I believe I took them concurrently, and probably not everyone who took Physics took Calculus at all. Therefore, the Physics was based on the algebraic forms of the equations, rather than deriving the equations from first principles^*. I suspect this was probably true in my son's case, too.

No, I do mean ordinals. The difference in usage is an artifact of how ordinal arithmetic is defined. 0 is a limit ordinal (it's not the successor of any other ordinal), which is why it's a bit of an exception. But including it makes ordinal arithmetic a model of PA.

The difference in usage is pretty vacuous, in fact. I can say that every set has a zeroth element. And it's true, vacuously, since every set contains the empty set.

Don't know if it works in Chinese, but informally, Japanese uses a four-stroke character that essentially means "empty circle". It's the equivalent of the Western habit of saying "oh" for "zero" when reading off strings of digits.

It doesn't matter. Either you restrict things so hard that you can't create paradoxes or achieve anything much else either, or you give yourself enough rope to be useful and/or hang yourself. Since it turns out that even pretty basic arithmetic can be used to create paradoxes (thanks, Kurt Gödel and Alan Turing!) you're basically fundamentally stuck with having some things that you can say but can't prove.

No, but you've got to create a very restricted language to do it. If it's strictly impossible to create self-referential statements, you're golden. But you can't then use the language/logic you've created to reason about itself; that's precisely what causes the problems.

That's not a huge deal, though. It's a lot scarier sounding than it really is.

The soundness theorem tells us that every sound theory has a model. The incompleteness theorems, together with the completeness theorem, tell us that the model for PA is not unique.

The point being that you can't prove these Godel statements because they're not true in every model. The universe of mathematics is richer than was previously thought.
