E-mail notifications (don't work)
-
I enabled all e-mail options (including Receive an email every time a post is made on the forum (unless you mute the topic or category)) in my preferences, but I'm yet to receive any e-mail from this forum...
-
Did you enter a name in the name field? If you didn't, you didn't actually save anything. We talked about this bug somewhere around here.
-
I created a new account with my old username (which I couldn't do yesterday - WTF?).
Anyway, about 10 minutes after I posted this topic, I got all the missing e-mails at once. I must say, the old notifications were much much better.
-
Also, the plain-text version of notification appears to be raw markdown/BBCode mix. Brillant!
-
Same here it would seem. I didn't realize it until now though, for some stupid reason Thunderbird never notified me of a new mail, and it's marked as read in Gmail webmail client as well. Weird stuff.
But yeah, it seems it got sent when I created the account with same username here. No password recovery emails I tried activating yesterday either, guess those were never sent because my account didn't actually exist... or something.

Which is why I turned off email notifications from here. I was quite able to keep up with the CS forum via email. I'm unable to do it here - can't get used to the email format...

I had the same issue, I don't think we all got imported from the old forum. Clearly some of us are more equal than others.
-
I see that at least one feature of the old forum has been ported over: the notification e-mails still arrive in order almost, but not quite entirely unrelated to the order of replies in the thread.
-
I get about 10 emails an hour from this site. I gotta disable that stuff.

That all? I was getting a lot more than that, and couldn't cope with the
messresult...
-
I get random emails and can't discern the pattern. I've had four emails in five minutes and then nothing since last night.
I would guess it's to do with people responding to threads I have posted on but it doesn't seem to follow a predictable pattern.

I had to create a "new" account when I came over here. Took me two attempts at password recovery before I un-derped and tried that.

Yes. Alex Paapi also made me create a new account. I am very much excited to be receiving money for testing discourse.

Yes, the rate he's paying official beta testers is very generous. I'm surprised he's able to afford it, since I doubt these forums generate any revenue.

By default you only get emails if:
- you haven't been on the forum, in a web browser, in the last ~10 minutes
- you haven't already read the post
- the post is a direct reply to you:
- by quoting your post
- by clicking reply button on your post
- by mentioning your @username

I'll finally be able to buy that goat I've had my eye on. Then I'll have a dowry to get my poor, 17 year-old spinster daughter married off with!

Hey my post about receiving payments has caused some flare-ups in our community.
Please don't talk about the money, is the private message I have received from Alex P.

That quasi-sentence makes as much sense as one of Nagesh's posts.

I am morbiuswilters only, but much better looking in person.

Looks like e-mail notifications now mostly work, except that they still arrive in order that's almost entirely unrelated to the order of posting.

Exactly like home, then?

It's been getting worse and worse lately - compare the Received and Created columns:
CS did send e-mails a bit randomly, but I don't remember it ever being this bad.
-
...and of course, Discourse now stopped sending e-mails completely. Last one I received was around 3 AM CEST.
-
This was due to the paulabean bot rampage filling the scheduled queue to the tune of millions of items.
On a related note, I just fixed a bug where the
List-ID
email header was not present on most emails, and may have prevented grouping of emails by most clients.(Actually we were inserting
List-Id
, which is not correct, and even then only sometimes depending on the site configuration. Now all emails about a topic should have a validList-ID
.)
-
That's weird; email header names are supposed to be case-insensitive.
-
Yeah, I was just going by exactly what's in the RFC
The syntax of the List-Id header follows: list-id-header = "List-ID:" [phrase] "<" list-id ">" CRLF
-
And insensitivity was specified in RFC 822. (It's been superseded, but that sort of thing tends to stick.)
-
Given how many clients and servers I've seen over the years mangling emails that are completely in accordance with specification, it's amazing it ever works at all.
-
Good news, we got Mandrill to stop stripping the
List-*
headers, which I can confirm now appear in my WTF Discourse email notifications:From: dkf <use-the-contact-form@thedailywtf.com> Sender: dkf <use-the-contact-form@mail128-11.atl41.mandrillapp.com> Subject: [What the Daily WTF?] Poll: Will Nagesh ever stop making polls? The bottom two are the newer ones.
Hopefully that will help with threading / grouping in some email clients.

You failed to be Professor Farnsworth. 7/10 please try again harder next time.
-
And now I don't have the topic list showing one unread topic. Suck it, Jeff.
-
Again e-mail notifications don't work - I'm only getting the weekly summaries to the account I thought I've deleted...
-
-
Nope. Nothing in the mailserver logs either.

It appears they aren't actually getting sent out for some reason; not sure why, but still poking around...
-
Ok - I'm stumped...
Your (current) email settings as of > 10 minutes ago:
Mail log as of ~1530UTC:
Same log filtered:
I would (normally) have expected mails sooner than 54 minutes for that latter.
Sorry - I've exhausted the extent of what I can investigate...
-
maybe the problem is that all the email addresses are blank?
ok, i know they are just censored with white in the screenshot, but.... well i wanted to say that.

...and now I'm getting notifications again...

Nope.

On a related note, I got this morning a “Digest for 11-06-2014” email from Discourse:
A brief summary of What the Daily WTF? since we last saw you on 10-30-2014.
WTF!? (I have the “ When you don't visit the site, send an email digest of what's new:” option unchecked)

FTFTFY

Administering a discourse instance, is there a more Trivial Pursuit?

No you don't. Not on the username it was sent to.
