@boomzilla that looks even less safe than the original chariot races.

@Benjamin-Hall
Are you not entertained?!?

@Benjamin-Hall This is the "Cool Stuff" thread, not the "Safe Stuff" thread.

A video about the building progress of Guédelon Castle:
-
@HardwareGeek surprised he decided to try to crack it
-
@JBert I hadn't heard about that before - that is really cool!

@Mason_Wheeler riddles, eh?

@hungrier said in Climate change:
Data center operators could reduce their footprint by changing the way they use SSDs, say the researchers. For example, the life of SSDs could be extended by introducing better strategies for reading and writing data so all the data cells wear out uniformly. Better error correcting codes could allow SSDs to operate with damaged memory cells and thereby extend their life.
By coincidence, I just watched this LTT video the other day:

TLDW: They have shitloads of raw flash memory, directly controlled by Xeon CPUs, that do pretty much exactly what the quoted excerpt says
This is really cool!

@Gribnit Ugh, anorexics. So thin you can actually see through them.
-
Literal street art.
-
@boomzilla we got some Toynbee tiles too.

-
@JBert the opening riffs reminded me less of Metallica and more of Doom E1M1, but when we got to the singing pumpkins, I was sold.
-
-
@GOG in the video linked, a few minutes in, it has lights in the shape of pumpkins that are synched to the music as if the pumpkins are singing. I thought it was cool but I am also easily amused/distract— oh shiny!
-
@Arantor Yeah, I know. Is joke.
-
@GOG sorry, I had the dumb and did not realise. Current work is messing me up more than I’d like to admit.

No. Is? No. IS? no.... Is!

NodeBB search works!
I actually searched for a reply I made to your post .

The thumbnail is a lie, but the title is truthful. A whole bunch of cool stuff for computer hardware nerds.

Remember that old nerd who promised to revolutionize CPUs by replacing registers with The Belt? Apparently the project is still alive. The old nerd even answered a bunch of interesting questions this week about the architecture!
Yes, I'm still hyped for that vaporware.

Paging @igodard, for all it's worth.

Finger tracking using only your webcam and the browser:
You might need to get a bit of distance to your cam and the wireframe seems to be a bit more accurate than the 3D-render but still, rather impressive.

No.
Sounds like bubble memory tho.
Bob Dole uses statically-scheduled low cost hardware vs dynamically sched...
Bob Dole.
L4
Oh okay, so, port some specific assembler optimizations. At least they're not asking for seL4. Hopefully.

Somebody did make a linear version before that, which is an entirely different kind of thing:

@boomzilla Less hi-tek, but keeps me occupied.

I've been to a faire tailored for schools yesterday (called the Didacta) where there are various vendors and institutions showing you what they're doing or offering. Sometimes you run across something really nice where you then think: "Finally, a solution for that problem we've been having."
It may be something small - like a dry board marker which is based on a gel instead of using solvents, looking a bit like crayons Which solves three problems at once:
a) It does not dry out
b) It is more easily wipeable than the solvent-based ones (I'm speaking of experience here - if you wipe the board directly after the lesson, no problem, but if you leave your writing over night or several days even, then you have to use a more agressive cleaning solution to completely clean the board).
c) It's also easily refillable - as I said, a bit like crayons. So you pay a bit more for the pen and then pay way less for refills.But, as I said, that's a small thing. A bigger advantage would be what I also found. You see, I've always been a bit annoyed by the way our science labs are setup - you either have electrical sockets, water and gas on pedestals fixed to the ground. Which means that rearranging the layout of tables and seats is hampered by those pedestals. Sometimes the tables are also fixed to rows only. Or you have the connectors overhead - some schools use moveable arms which due to their low height mean that you'll have to watch with eagle's eyes while you're lowering them because someone will inevitably run into them. Also, those moveable arms don't allow for water or gas connectors. And then you have the fixed overhead connectors which mean that if you're doing experiments you're once again limited to certain locations and also have a real nightmare if some pupil doesn't connect the water plugs correctly. Plus, running water lines next to electrical lines overhead is a joy all of its own. Not to mention all the cables dangling down now which, you know pupils, results in someone sweeping stuff of the table due to not looking where he or she is going.
And then I saw this:
It has a 1.5 kWh accumulator in its base, a refillable gas tank and there's a version which also offers water connectors and a sink (and a refillable water tank, of course). It's also controllable by the teacher (either by RFID or an app) so you can shut the ports on or off at any time.
I want those.

does it also compact trash?

Yeah, but I hate chalk for the things it does to your skin. Also, some of the chalk is really grating to write with. And forget writing if it got wet.

Prima facie, yes; nothing about the description would prevent ingestion.

Only if you're one of "The Few, The Proud, The
