The Official WTDWTF 2023 Recap
-
Alright, at long last it’s here: the official 2023 WTFWTD recap!
In an attempt to make the whole thing visible, it’s being presented as an HTML file this time. Unfortunately while it , I guess (wisely) serves random html uploads with a security policy that makes the paper planes not display. Just mentally s/// and you’ll get it.
Without further ado, the Official WTDWTF 2023 Recap!
Last year I asked “if I’ve missed any elusive lurkers or someone too obvious, point it out,” and nobody did, but I know for a fact there were plenty of people missed. Disappointing! This time was done with a slightly longer list, though might have still missed one or two. A fair few disappearances too.
In favour of actually presenting this I won’t bother picking awards this time, although the Sweaty Warthog Disaward still goes to Boomzilla, albeit with a comparatively restrained count. Oh bugger, do changes from last year have to be included in the next round? A wall-o-text award was mentioned that completely escaped my mind and I didn’t even think to check the previous thread for things to incorporate – maybe next year I’ll remember to add that, I’m sure. Or actually remember to ask about running some SQL at the time I have a chance to. A fancy sortable table would be neat too
-
@kazitor thanks for compiling! Seems that a number of us turned in a suitably performance this year!

You are supposed to put tabular content in a table though.

*edit the record is four posts for the year... so far.

Just link directly to the png (wherever that is) like you've done with ?
A fancy sortable table would be neat too
You could just upload a CSV, too, so I can sort it in Excel.

I'm a bit intrigued by the distribution of the number of votes on the "best post." There is clearly a cluster of 25-30 votes, with AFAICS only a single post(er) that goes above 30.
This doesn't match the usual Pareto distribution of most social indicators. As opposed to, for example, the number of posts, where there is one clear "winner" and then in a handful of people the number goes down by a factor 10 or so. This is the usual distribution of about anything on forums, if you look at the "users" page sorted by any of the available indicators you'll get this kind of things. But not for the "best post."
Which gets me to wonder, is this max number of 30 roughly the number of active (and voting) members? Then all those posts with 25-30 votes are basically "up-voted by everyone."
What might confirms this is that Garage and Lounge posts do get a very similar number of votes (maybe more 20-25, but not hugely smaller) which would match the fact that most regulars are also Garage/Lounge members (with a few exceptions that would account for the slightly smaller overall count).
So, is this forum made of 30-40 active members?

1 member, but the kicks in around the 40th alt.

More or less, I figure. When I did the list two years ago, the highs were: 37, 37, 33, 33, 32, etc.
So it looks like either this year "up-voted by everyone" was a lower percentage of everyone active, or we lost several active users since then. Well, the second part is definitely true.

But clicking the headers doesn't sort!

This is a real table, like 1999 intended. None of that newfangled JS crap to sort and filter.

There is no PNG to link to; the icon comes from a font and the security policy prevents its download. If you save the file locally, or install the font directly, it should all appear then.
For whatever reason webtypes years ago decided SVGs are too hard for simple icons. Admittedly SVG is a horribly-bloated format clearly intended for being embedded as part of HTML rather than merely providing scalable images, though I'm marginally surprised nobody's promoted any other format that just encodes Beziers with fills and strokes.
A fancy sortable table would be neat too
You could just upload a CSV, too, so I can sort it in Excel.
Only concern is the nicely-formatted links then.

Alas, while pulling a page of posts will indicate the number of boats on each (and plenty of other data that makes the scraping somewhat suboptimal), the only way to get the list of upboating users is to query each post individually. I would have liked to compile stats on who's giving out the most boats otherwise. Well, who's giving out the second most boats.

Probably. I have all of them ignored so it doesn't even enter my mind
Could also exclude Funny Stuff from best, but then there are plenty of other threads where shameless reposts can manifest so it's saner to just not try.

Well, you know, it's less about excluding shameless reposts and more about making sure that the size of my epeen is properly reported and not diluted to 3.95 in. due to my public exhibitionism of my masochistic tendencies

Yeah, we don't need no steenkin' statistics to tell us the winner of that.
Probably. I have all of them ignored so it doesn't even enter my mind
I have most of them ignored, but I missed at least a couple.
It would be interesting to see the results both with and without. In 2023, it was the difference between second and third place for most posts .

It looks like @Carnage and @Polygeekery are our most prolific tax avoiders, and @DogsB is putting his Irish experience to good use as well. Over 10,000 posts between them and they only paid thread taxes 4 times

@Polygeekery even paid the thread tax at least once where the title didn't start "Re:"

@loopback0 it’s neither in the lounge nor the garage, and yet I haven’t even seen that thread at all.
Wonder how that happened. Maybe I was on vacation.

@kazitor SVGs were a complex format long before they were adopted for web icons and fonts, up to and including dynamic content…

@remi said in The Official WTDWTF 2023 Recap:

-
@BernieTheBernie they could still be called "active."
(in first approximation though, there is likely a very high correlation between number of posts and number of votes (given))
-
@remi said in The Official WTDWTF 2023 Recap:
likely a very high correlation between number of posts and number of votes (given)
@blakeyrat would disagree, if he was still participating.
-
@HardwareGeek he would then be wrong (as usual ) since the correlation would still be high.
Also, you have another example of such a poster right above and below your post. Though that user (hopefully?) doesn't as much as .
