Factorio

@ben_lubar That one doesn't have any D (unless you could the one in the title)
Slaves to Armok: God of Blood: Chapter II: Dwarf Fortress
oh shit it's 3D

I got crazy hooked on Factorio a few months ago. Here's a craptastic image of my first ever factory:
I've come a long way since then. My current project is a mega base that produces 1200 science per minute. I'm currently working on the logistics for science pack 3, but I need more refineries. My red circuit line is drinking about 50k petroleum per minute and only producing about 1/3 of what I'm going to need. Here's a massively zoomed out shot of the map. It's still pretty rough and needs a lot of work, but it's getting there bit by bit. The original base down south produced ~75 science per minute and at this point has largely been cannibalized for parts or turned into a shopping mall.
-
Well, it took a while, but I finally "finished" my factory. For a glorious two hours, I was launching about 1 rocket per minute. That lasted until one of my copper mines evaporated and caused my green circuit production to fall behind. The mine in question is south of the copper smeltery and still has a few miners sputtering along, but nowhere near enough to keep filling up trains. At its peak the factory draws about 3.7 GW of power and spews enough pollution to piss off (presumably) every biter in the known universe.
For size perspective here's a shot of my production science area, which comically enough, is out of stone bricks. Guess I need to add another train or two hauling stone. The basic layout produces 1200 science packs per minute, though beaconed and moduled, I get about 2200 per minute.
Whew, that was fun. but I think it's time to put the game away for a while and reclaim my life. I have well over 100 hours and a lot of scratch paper invested in this factory. Maybe I should go spend some time with my wife...or at least make sure she hasn't left me sometime in the past couple of weeks.

-
@dragoon Sounds reminiscent of Minecraft Skyblock.
-
@pie_flavor I believe that's an inspiration, yes. It involves building your entire factory from what you can sieve out of sea water.
-
@dragoon Because apparently the vanilla Factorio tech tree isn't complicated enough? That looks both terrifying and amazing. I'll have to give it a try. Thanks!
-
@anguirel In the minecraft one you put a net in the water and pull out like 4 steel bricks. Don't take the description too literally.
-
@blakeyrat I only read the short description on the linked page, but it looks like they added a bunch of structures to harvest stuff from the ocean, new types of power generation (burn algae for power), etc. I'm traveling to Seattle for work next week. I'll probably try it out if I have some time during layovers.
Slightly off topic: Do you still do the "Blakeyrat plays indie games so you don't have to" videos? It's been a long while since I last checked, but I used to enjoy those.

Not in a long while.

@blakeyrat said in Factorio:

I feel like you haven't played Minecraft skyblock. Or Minecraft at all for that matter.
-
@pie_flavor I feel like you have the head of a particularly ugly insect and an IQ in the single digits.
Seriously, though, I watched a friend play it on Twitch for hours and she TOLD me it was "skyblock mod". Maybe she lied, I dunno. But she was fishing out all sorts of shit that isn't normal in puddles of water.
-
@blakeyrat That's not how skyblocks work. The closest thing to what you were saying I think might be Modern Skyblock 3 where one of the mechanics is the Survivalist's Fishing Rod, which changes the chances from 85% fish 10% junk 5% treasure to 0% fish 100% junk 0% treasure. Basically the only thing you use this for is getting the saplings. Metals are a long fucking arduous process.
-
@pie_flavor Ok.
-
@aygeeplus I now make green circuits in four different places. :/
-
I recently got back into this on a server with some of my old EVE corp members, and we're running with a crapton of Bob's Mods and Angel Mods stuff. Makes startup somewhat harder since you can no longer just mine for copper and iron, you have to break down other ores via crushers and whatnot to get those. It's making logistics interesting dealing with all the extra machines and leftovers and whatnot.
-
I just hope they release the game soon now.
-
@magus I worry that they have tons of mod action going before they fixed their shitty UI and now they can't fix their shitty UI because it'll break all the mods because they're shitty developers who wrote a game I'd like to play but then didn't stop to think, "hey maybe we shouldn't make the UI shitty and awful!"
-
@blakeyrat I don't think the Factorio devs are afraid to break mods when game changes necessitate. At least they try to announce breaking changes, which is more than can be said for some game devs.
-
Is anyone in the Satisfactory open beta?
-
@pie_flavor Cool as that would be, and confident as I am in their ability to produce a good product, I don't think I even want to be in any betas. Space Engineers and Factorio and CrossCode will probably all be released this year, and of them only CrossCode is adding a large amount of new content I haven't experienced.
I like a game's release to have some meaning.
-
@pie_flavor I wish :(
-
Sure, but does it run Crysis?
-
@Zecc This kind of makes me want to throw up, it's so awesome

last week: finally launched a rocket and unlocked all technologies!
Wube: guess what?we can start to approximate the date of releasing the expansion, which is planned to be about one year from now.
Ah great, then I can instead waste my time trying to do better on the supplies challenge scenario. Or do a playthrough with one of the many available alternate tech tree mods instead.
we will be publishing Friday Facts every week about all the different aspects of the expansion until release!

Or you could do a co-op There Is No Spoon achievement run with a fellow WTDWTFer?

There Is No Spoon achievement run
BTDT
Although while we’re here I have periodically sorta pondered floating the idea of organising a WTDWTFactorio game. Not that I’d be hosting or anything.

Is Factorio even compatible when one player is playing upside down and the others aren't?

There will be trains driving on the left¹ and you’re going to like it
¹ that is to say, Correct-Hand Signalling

I will just make all track double-sided, nothing could possibly go wrong that way.

Those can be a ton of fun, one of these days I will finish my seablock, I swear.

From my experience with Transport Tycoon, run a loop. It simplifies ever so many things.
-
I wonder whether one could get clang to target factorio combinators.

Even Factorio is not immune to exploits (fix was released back in October):
