@kt_ close. The problem is, I don't know when to shut the fuck up, which I'm sure will come as a surprise to.. uh, none of you. And I was having this extended argument on Twitter, in public, with a black female engineer, so the optics and power dynamics were all totally wrong. I looked like an asshole and I was being an asshole. Not intentionally, but nobody ever wakes up and says "gee, I think I'll be a total asshole today". It just.. happens. You need to learn to control it and recognize it.
Funny story: I was invited to give a talk at the 2021 Twitter world meetup, which was an honor, and they specifically asked me to cover this story. I ended up apologizing, in writing, to this person. (I knew where she worked, so I sent it to her work, so it wasn't weird.) It was JUST before the pandemic. But apologies aren't about getting a response: apologies are about APOLOGIZING, for you, because you fucked up. And I did. I really did.
I'm getting much better at learning to shut the fuck up and stop digging deep holes for myself when I keep talking long beyond the point where I should have stopped.
I even had laminated "shut the fuck up, Jeff" cards printed for my partner, and told her she has license to hand me these cards once a week as she sees fit.
Because man. I really, really need to shut the fuck up sometimes.

Also, jeff seems to have a surprising number of haters in that thread.
People hating Jeff is not surprising at all.

It's been a couple of years since @Lorne-Kates and @blakeyrat have buggered off, and we don't really need any imitators, so thank you but your services are not needed.

So, you're throwing down a gauntlet. It's not a very good gauntlet, but, I'll at least acknowledge it: Get fucked.

Is this an impostor or the real deal?
-
@topspin looks legit.
-
@topspin It semmed legit to me, or I wouldn't have approved the posts.
We can always ask for proof.
@codinghorror1 Could you perhaps link back to this thread from a file uploaded to codinghorror.com?
Which is currently down, by the way.Looks like https://blog.codinghorror.com/ is up though, so maybe there's just nothing there.

Who would impersonate Jeff? That seem REALLY crazy.

I hadn't realized that you were a Global Moderator.
It seems like it must be someone who reeeaallly hates him. So much so that years later the mere thought of him causes anger. Which doesn't narrow it down much here.
-
@Gern_Blaanston Have you met @codnghorror or @codinghorror, or even @CodingHorrorBot?

You can count me out, at least. I've got so many people to be angry about that poor ol' Jeff doesn't even get a look in.

@JBert Is Doing It Wrong™
-
@codinghorror1 twitter is only trouble. there is no news of something awesome xyz did on Twitter, just flame wars
inb4 positive news linking to twitter are always about some announced of something the person done that could be made public anywhere else
-
@sockpuppet7 Its purpose, just like all other social media, is to let people communicate with other people. At the moment I seem to use it to track what artists are doing and to hold conversations about software engineering, the shortcomings of large language models, and why fixed point math is a great deal more awkward than it seems.

I could very well ask you the same.

@Gribnit we don’t have to ask this of you, you’re inimitable.

I'm still a little salty he decided to stop using the avatar I gifted so long ago.
-
@Tsaukpaetra
Especially after I so carefully amended itBut maybe he’s just lost track of it. We can rebuild.
Addendum: my goodness, that’s some sloppy editing. Utterly shameful.

While not quite Discourse levels (just for a shameless re-railing troll attempt), suffers from "randomly delete people's avatars when they log in", which has reportedly affected several people. Some repeatedly.
At some point, kicks in.
-
@topspin though… not the person mentioned?

@Arantor said in It semms Jeff Atwood has deleted his twitter account:

I can neither confirm nor deny the intentionality of my observed actions.
I'm guessing the avatar associates with a principal other than the user identity itself, specifically an ephemeral principal based on the credentials. Multi-login must be a bit of a hack.
-
@Arantor said in It semms Jeff Atwood has deleted his twitter account:

I’m not a mind reader, and even if I was, don’t gaze into the abyss…
-
@topspin I’m just asserting that the account mentioned has a non-default avatar and presumably isn’t reuploading it every time they login. Though they may just be permanently logged in and thus evade the bug anyway.
-

a non-default avatar
Do you think there is hope that one forum software will once manage to do something sane with avatars? Between lettres CDN and doing the most complicated thing to avoid creating a picture for new users, I have little hope.
Filed under: one day
my prince:@remi: willcomework
-
@remi depends on your definition of sane - once you get to the PHP toxic hellstew forums, they mostly operate on either having a generic fallback image, a simple letter on a background (like NodeBB but without the insanity) and/or Gravatar. Bonus points if they let a user pick an avatar from a pre-selected gallery.
-
@Arantor so you're saying that PHP is saner than our current crop of forum software.
ETA: lettre on random background is fine, and actually quite a good default as it creates a wide range of avatars (so not everyone gets the same) and avatars that are even somewhat related to the user (first lettre of username).
was that close from getting it right, if they had not gone the extra-complicated CSS route and instead just done the simplest thing (generate the image once with a simple
ImageMagick
command and be done with it). I have to admire the effort that they went through to avoid that.
-
-
@remi last gen forum software is mostly from an era where Disco thinking hadn’t been invented yet. If they do have CSS letter avatars, guarantee it won’t have anywhere near the complexity NodeBB puts into it but very often yes, they just make an image and simplify the rest of their universe.
Say what you will about the PHP folks but we generally know how to get things done. The WP folks… aren’t PHP folks (sorry)

@remi We only have one Kermit.

@dkf Not that one.
