Arbitrary is not random, like you seem to suggest.

Should Twitter get to the point where its lack of moderation causes Apple and Google to remove it from their stores, Musk said that he will "make an alternative phone." He said that it hopes "it does not come to that," but will do so if there is "no other choice."
Yes, the MuskPhone with Twitter! Can Apple and Google ban Twitter now so we can see this glorious device come to fruition?

It isn't. Quis arbitem in vacuo?

@boomzilla there needs to be a reputational risk and just overall reliability of partner assessment rubric created, for partners like Musk. The current "their money is just as green as anyone's" doesn’t work when they randomly kick you in the balls based on shoulder aliens.
ed. kick him in the balls
I'll consider it, Ed, but I'm not going to just do it.

@Gustav You're assuming @Atazhaia isn't Musk.
Which given the low amount of bullshit @Atazhaia posts is a fair assumption.
-
@Zecc I do have a profile pic of Musk(ox).
-
TL;DR: Ex-twitter workers lawyered up and said 'pay the severance you promised or we'll see you in single arbitration at twitter's expense per our contracts.' With threats of further penalties against Musk himself since at least some jurisdictions allow going after him instead of just the company.
With a nice little cherry on the of getting to use Musk's title of "Chief Twit" in a letter.
-
@coderpatsy that is weirdly informal for a lawyer.

@topspin shitty Twitter ex-employee hired a shitty lawyer?

Demanding your rightful compensation after getting fired for not clicking a stupid button counts as shitty now?
-
@topspin no, but "weirdly informal" could be an indication they won't get their rightful compensation in the end.
-

Is there any evidence that Musk intends to withhold the promised compensation?

@HardwareGeek normally a threat of legal action is good enough heuristic. But in this case, fair point.

Disloyal to the end, I see. I shall be arriving (by tunnel) shortly (a few weeks) to treat you with my full personal disdain.

I wouldn't expect that to be paid until they're actually unemployed. Ya know, after that 3 month severance period.

My understanding was that they were given 3 months of gardening leave, during which they would be compensated as though they were still working. Was there other compensation they were promised?

From what others are saying, it sounded like there was more. If not, I hope Twitter's lawyers rake that letter over the coals publicly!

Musk on the why of buying Twitter:
I can't exactly say why because it's one of those things where, it's like: my biological neural nets said, 'It is important to buy Twitter' and just like with a digital neural net, you can't really exactly explain why the neural net is able to understand an image or text – the collective result of the neural net says this is an important decision, or this is the right action, and my biological neural net concluded that it was important to buy Twitter, and that if Twitter was not bought and steered in a good direction, it would be a danger for the future of civilization, and so that's why I bought it.
It all makes perfect sense now.
-
@Atazhaia ... so it's an impulse purchase after all?

Not when you fuck up the implementation, no. We even have an entire subfield of AI research dedicated solely to how not to fuck up in this specific way. But Sturgeon's Law prevails.

Musk gets lectured by a far better businessman:
Elon Musk's row with Apple – where he posted several tweets attacking the company, including asking if they hate free speech in America, and tweeting a meme about him going to war with the company, was entirely based on his not understanding how advertising works on his platform.
Following the mass shooting at the LGBTQ nightclub in Colorado Springs, Apple had paused its advertising, just as many other large brands did, to avoid appearing insensitive for tweeting promotions alongside graphic or mourning tweets.
However, nobody remaining at Twitter was able to tell this to Musk, who instead went on the offensive before flying to California, where Apple CEO Tim Cook was able to explain to him some of the basics about advertising on social media.
Although methinks Musk would have had a row with Apple regardless, just for some other reason.
-
@Atazhaia and methinks Apple would've withdrawn ads regardless, just for some other reason. (Not mutually exclusive with your stance.)
There's a mass shooting in USA like every month. At least 2-3 per year get nationwide coverage for weeks. How many times in the past was Apple concerned about their ads appearing next to graphic and mourning twits?
-
@Gustav Yeah, the key sentence for me was: "where Apple CEO Tim Cook was able to explain to [Musk] some of the basics about advertising on social media", as Musk has severe incompetence in how to run a business which does include how to do promotions. Even though whenever an "appropriate" ad ends up next to a news story is a great source of fun. Like an ad for a cruise line next to news about a cruise liner running aground and sinking.

Yes, I could also be the richest man in the world if I managed to inherit a fortune and build a massive cult of personality around me to gobble up whatever I say and do without any form of critical thinking into my actions.
-
@Atazhaia I enjoy forum trolling and exaggerated bragging as much as the next person, but there's a line beyond which it looks less like trolling and more like being detached from reality. And your apparent belief that Elon amassed $200 billion of net worth on progeny and charisma alone is dangerously close to it.

Your cult of personality attitude is showing strongly today.
-
@Gustav Sure, he managed to build up (especially Tesla) really well thanks to a combination of good technology (albeit questionable design decisions) and good timing, but the question is: how well is he running his businesses now? How well is he managing his personal brand right now?
-
@Atazhaia by what measure, and why did you pick a measure other than annual net worth change?
-
@Gustav I know about the old "All publicity is good publicity", but I dunno how well that's gonna be working out for the Musk enterprises now. The vibes I am getting is that public opinion is taking a sharp downturn, and if that happens it also means it's gonna affect the net worth change down the line, especially as he's so incredibly tied to his brands.
Also, Musk buying Twitter has been a public affair, with a lot of him personally running things. So, how has Twitter's net worth been changing in the short time since Musk took control? Would you say he's doing a good job improving the brand? If he's such a great businessman, surely things would have been improving since he took over, no?
-

Eh, it's the Current Thing. People will get bored with it when something else happens and life will go on. One thing that happens all the time with Twitter is that certain things get magnified way out of proportion. In this case, I think the out migration to other platforms is one of them.
Ad revenue is down, sure, but again, at least some of that is just the shitty economy, and he's gotten rid of a lot of bloat in the payroll expenses. I have no idea how well it will do in the long term but I don't think the current hysteria will have all that much to do with how it goes either way.
-
@Atazhaia said in In other hostile takeover Tweets...:

I couldn't care less about publicity. I'm talking about money. All money is good money (crypto notwithstanding). The purpose of a business is to make money for the owner. A well managed business makes lots of money for the owner. To tell whether Musk manages his businesses well or not, you only have to answer one question: is he making lots of money?
He's definitely taking a hit in next Forbes Billionaires list, because he just made the most expensive single personal purchase in all history, and he paid well above market value. But making that single purchase doesn't say much about his money-making abilities - meaning the 2023 number will be useless for analysis. We have to wait for Forbes Billionaires 2024 to know whether Musk is still killing it as a businessman or not.
And don't make the mistake of confusing company's finances with personal finances. The goal is to make money for the owner, not the company. Remember that one time Trump bankrupted a big casino? Did you know it still ended up as a net profit for him personally?

@LaoC linked a twitter dread in In other hostile takeover Tweets... that said:
The stuff uncovered in the Twitter whistleblower report is much crazier than anything in the "Twitter files" but it's much less politically/tribally salient so it got no attention.
It also requires at least some basic understanding of engineering to see just how crazy it is. A lot more people can understand moderation bias than shitty engineering.
… and I would also say that moderation bias is really a bigger deal. Poor engineering practice could easily sink the company, but most users don't have particularly sensitive data at twitter, so even a big leak wouldn't hurt them too much.
-
On a less scandalous, random thought:
The technology of twitter is so stupid (and always has been) and not fit for purpose, even the official Twitter account itself resorts to stupid hacks to actually use it.Now you may think “eh, whatever” because we’ve grown accustomed to seeing this, but everybody on there posting their text as images is a gigantic .
-

@topspin said in In other hostile takeover Tweets...:
Now you may think “eh, whatever” because we’ve grown accustomed to seeing this, but everybody on there posting their text as images is a gigantic .
The fractal is that you can have ALT text that has a way higher length limit than the tweet itself (not sure, something like 4k?) so you can post long text, just in the weirdest and most inconvenient way for both sender and recipient.
