That comment makes me think you are decidedly younger than I am. I haven’t gone to the beach for the better part of 30 years, but back then, you probably saw almost as many topless women there as not.

(The reason for the decline in this, or so I’ve heard claimed, is phones with cameras in them. My thoughts are that it’s both that and the change in mentality I mentioned — because Dutch society is a lot more American-style prudish than it used to be. Why do five-year-olds need to wear bikini tops, for example?)

Just wait until you have to buy a refrigerator... I just had to replace mine - got an absolutely bottom-of-the-line, no frills, freezer-on-top (wanted on-bottom, but they were all too big to fit in the existing hole) - it cost almost $1300US.

@dcon I hope for you that "an absolutely bottom-of-the-line, no frills" refrigerator in the US is much more than what that description would cover here, because there's no way it would cost that much.

Looking at one common appliance store, and not even sorting results (so it's sorted by "best products" (whatever that means) rather than price), the first hit is something like that:

OK, freezer is on bottom but for fridges that size (180 cm) I'm not sure freezer-on-top exists here (it exists for smaller ones, which would be even cheaper) and it's probably not really relevant to the price anyway. And there are cheaper ones (about 300 EUR) if I scroll a bit more.

Even what is called here "American fridge" (i.e. two doors side-by-side, and things like cold water/ice distributor on the front -- probably not what you want, but typically the more expensive range of things) starts at 700-800 EUR:
