Status: vexed at my smart TV. It allegedly takes a 1080p input, but when I have Steam Link send it exactly that input, it goes black for about one second in six. Not particularly usable when playing any kind of action game, and not particularly nice even when playing a turn-based game.
I bought this TV by browsing around a TV place and buying the good-enough-for-my-needs-but-not-too-pricey one. How can I figure out in the future whether a TV actually meets its specs? (Yeah, it technically took a 1080p signal and displayed it... most of the time. Ship it!)

Try changing the refresh rate. I.e. 59.94 vs 60 Hz.

There are ways of doing that that are easier and more likely to be successful.

If you do it right, you can say you have just as much kinetic energy as you had when you were younger.

That too. Mostly of the housing market so I could conceivably buy one.
But really, I've got an intermittent, happens on its own schedule with no apparent rhyme or reason, crash in the android app I'm responsible for. Trying to pin it down more. Finally have a full stack trace...and it wasn't where I thought it was the first time I battled with it. So it's back to square one.

Status: reading up and trying to decide on how to approach doing dialogue in a text adventure.
On the one hand, a dialogue tree (like Monkey Island) seems convenient but I'm wondering if the character being a detective should have a little more latitude on such things.
Gah. Choices are hard.
-
@Arantor Discworld Noir was for me the first game where not only did you have an inventory for the physical objects you were carrying, but also a notebook for a predefined set of notes you unblocked along the game.
The thing for me was how not only could you of course use objects on objects or characters, but also use notes on objects, characters or other notes to produce new notes.
In particular I remember how pleasantly surprised I was that they predicted I might use "find a hiding place for these two" with "background sky", to humorous effect.
My point is dialogue trees can get you a long way if you're exhaustive enough in setting them up.
-
@Zecc said in The Official Status Thread:

That sounds like an exhausting amount of effort.
-
@Zecc my concept is less about solving the crime, I suppose; a lot of it is really the emotional journey the detective goes through in the midst of solving the crime. It's evident early on that it's a setup.
I have some neat ideas about playing around with the usual tropes of the format and subverting a lot of the usual expectations. Some of that definitely relies on signposting from NPCs and it's those interactions I'm most unsure about.

We've been building housing at far too low a rate for decades; this shit's been stewing up since at least the 1980s, and planners have known and been powerless to fix it. The people with the power to fix it (and their friends) have been too busy profiting from the increasing land values to do anything. Any fix will be a political catastrophe.
And quite a bit of the US is trying to follow the same route.

Yeah, no one is saying the quiet bit loud yet. Without getting into the weeds or the garage, if they don't build housing, most people under 35ish probably won't be able to afford a home of their own. If they do build housing, most people over 35 that are paying a 20 - 30 year mortgage are going to pay twice what the assets are then worth.

Simply ask what will happen when the next generation gets full control of the reins of power. Then the boomers will find that they're having their ownership of property defined out from under their feet, and it will all be legal because the people in charge will be incentivised to make it so. Yes, there will a lot of ways it will be done, such as by encouraging them to remortgage their house to unlock the capital in it.

If you do it right, you can say you have just as much kinetic energy as you had when you were younger.
But in kinetic energy, speed enters as square, while mass does not...
Energy = 0.5 * mass * speed*speed
In other words, with twice the previous mass, you still need 70% of the previous speed.

I am waiting for that crash of the housing market since ... decades? centuries? millenia?
But when that crash happens, the money on my bank account will have become worthless due to general inflation, and the value of my shares will also be at a historic low.
It's a loose-loose-situation.

Status: did a BIOS update on a HP Z620 workstation in an attempt to see if we could at least enable Secure Boot on it (or, at the least least, EFI boot).
Update success! Now on a version from 2019 (up from 2012) and EFI (with Secure boot!) is now an option!
Disable Legacy boot in preparation to enable Secure Boot (because you can't have Sucure Boot enabled if Legacy is enabled) and.... the system fails to POST.
It fails so hard I can't even get into the BIOS settings anymore without clearing the CMOS.
Good jorb.
I guess we'll just have to run without it. Here's to hoping IT doesn't notice...

I've never gotten anywhere near xcode, but I get the strong impression that castrating yourself without anesthesia using a dull, rusty butter knife would be better than any version of xcode.

Status: For the new project I'm onboarding on, I have been sent several documents describing things you need to do to get everything set up.
They all describe a specific code editor which you definitely need to use in order to do any work.
It's a different editor in each one.
Thus, I suspect I'll be deferring to my signature.
