WTF is happening with Windows 12? And nothing else

Hmm...
Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger said that Meteor Lake would be the first Intel product made using Intel 4 and that prototypes had already successfully booted Windows 12 and Linux.
Has the journalist who wrote this made a typo in the article, or has Pat Gelsinger outed that Windows 12 is far enough in development that they have test versions already?
Ah, shit.

@dcon the typical "what would windows looks like if I stole these things from macOS" video.
Also nothing new. There was a time when every digital design student wannabe was modeling 3D renders of iPhones, then added some stupid things and called it "the next iPhone".
Wankers gonna wank, design wankers doubly so.

I much prefer the ones where they just show KDE.

well..... shiiit.
I was gonna make a joke topic about windows 12 being KDE because... well because the LOLs...
but when looking for a screenshot to illustrate it...
apparently, no it isn't a joke, it's actually happening we're pretty sure maybe? it was supposed to be february, then Q3, now '25 we think?
uhh.... anyone want to put over/under odds on exactly how many microtransactions that Microsoft will put into the OS? or maybe what sorts of new dark patterns they'll introduce to monetize their install base more?
EDIT: on and to top it all off, someone else already made the topic i wanted to make!

That's what happens when folks take advantage of the free economy?

monetize their install base
They should just make it a subscription and be done with it already.

I predict that they will have multiple tiers of subscriptions. including one you can absolutely sign up for post install, becasue why get the license fees from an employer when you can ALSO get employees to pay for subscripotions that the company would otherwise reject.
also subscriptions will be easy to sign up for and almost impossible to cancel, because of course they will be.

gee, allowing users to cancel services they dont' want or nead easily could cost companies money.... quelle suprise.

No no, creating the functionality alone to do that takes money, and lots of it, to say nothing of the folks that end up using said functionality.

The AI assistant will helpfully help you upgrade your subscription.
Sometimes by mistake. Those darned AIs can be so unpredictable.

: I see you're using Basic Windows. I've automatically upgraded you to the super-pro version using all the credit cards you had saved in all your browsers.
Gotta be complete.

You joke but actually... if you upgrade Win10 Home to Pro via the Store, you don't get Pro, you get Enterprise installed which is then unlicensed (obviously). I wonder how many people then upgraded to Enterprise as a result.

I hadn't heard about that.
-
@dcon I fixed this by finding the generic Win10 Pro code on Microsoft's website - for which I have zero regret, I paid for the legit licence, through their store, so I'm going to use the generic code that you're not supposed to use for this exact purpose, to fix their fuckup.

Yeah, nobody's supposed to fix their fuckups (especially not themselves).

Oh, MS license fuckups are fun. I bought a Win 8 upgrade license, but it failed to recognize my Win 7 license. But there was some magic commands to fix the issue. Only that it still didn't ask for the Win 7 key, but still validated the Win 8 key meaning I got Win 8 for cheap and got to keep my Win 7 too.

The official Microsoft support solution is to use a crack.

hhhmmm.....
i need to put togehter a fake activate windows thing that says something like 'activate ArchLinux' and get it to run on my work laptop as a fake overlay. i should be able to get something working fairly easily with some powershell.... a transparent always on top window tigh hit detection disabled so clicks always go through to the window underneath? yeah that could do it....
-
@Arantor We must be on different versions of Earth. This is another one I've never seen and I've updated two personal laptops and at least 3 work devices using the store with no problem.
Unless it's only non-oem installs? The personl ones were an ASUS and a Dell laptop, and the work ones were all Dell devices as well.
-
@SirTwist don’t know, I only upgraded an OEM version and when I ran into that issue, I found no shortage of others it had happened to. Which was also how I found the page of legitimate Windows activation keys on Microsoft’s homepage.
Then there’s whatever bullshit happened to my mother in law. She used to run an office in Germany that needed special software and it needs to be on Pro or better. She’d bought a new laptop which, of course, only had Home on it.
Now, my German is pretty limited but fortunately I was there with my wife, and we were wrangling this thing together (she’s at least as technical when it comes to fighting with Windows), and she’d bought an upgrade… I think from the store but not the App Store somehow? Don’t know, I wasn’t party to what was bought from where but this was a few years ago and I remember being told it was north of £200 for the upgrade.
Except it hadn’t worked, and whatever shenanigans had transpired, it hadn’t installed correctly. It wasn’t via the store, because we did some faffing around downloading to a USB stick to install it. And it kept reinstalling Home despite us having a Pro product key.
There was a shouting call to Microsoft Support DE (it was louder than usual for !) and the apparent guidance from MS was to download a sketchy looking tool from a sketchy third party website to modify the Media Installer bundle to make it work.
I couldn’t believe what I was being told, but it seems the more MS try to harden for licensing, the more they consistently fuck it up.

Let me add a third data point to this.
Also Asus OEM.

@Zecc my personal laptop was MSI OEM. My mother in law’s was an HP OEM.

Sounds like a lot of work. Meanwhile, I am clearly running Windows on my work laptop as intended.
See, I got Edge and PowerShell running. Some slight graphical glitching happening though. I dunno what happened to the Windows logo on the Start menu for example.
-
@Atazhaia and of course the glitches moved the taskbar back to the left edge as $deity intended.

Ah, yeah, this happens most often with embedded keys.

You essentially tell it in the unattend.xml file to fuck off with the auto-detection. Can be done by hand by why not use a sketchy App to do it instead?
-
Incidentally, ever since I had to create a windows account to buy the license from the store I get these notifications:
Anyone know how I can get rid of whatever is producing these without losing anything else?

@Tsaukpaetra we didn’t know that at the time and, remember, MS Germany itself was telling us to use this sketchy app!
