Free Guy (2021)
Starring: Ryan Reynolds, some chick, and a bunch of video game streamers
RT score: Who gives a shit?
It's good.
-
I genuinely had no idea they were actual streamers until someone mentioned it while discussing it at work.
-
Troll 2:
Vegetarians turn people into plants so they can eat them. Only a kid and his ghostly grandfather can stop them. So bad it’s good
-
Men in Black
Will Smith kills a cockroach
-
@slapout1 But is it good? That's just a synopsis
-
-
Under The Shadow
Terrible.

Edit: WTF? The title disappeared.
Wizard of Oz:
Lots of short people. Some tall people.

Yes, but how short is up to you

All movies are too long; some are more too long than others. — CBS movie critic whose name escapes me at the moment and too to search
-
Honey, I Shrunk The Kids (1989)
Short guy as an inventor, makes a gadget for making big adventures with small family members, adventures ensue.
Short film by today's standards, but fun enough.
-
The Big Short (2015):
Shorts don't always have to be small. A recommended watch for anyone with bad memories of the year 2008.
-
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
Far too long
-
@loopback0 But it does prominently feature short people

I have no idea. Haven't even read any actual reviews or watched a trailer.
-
@boomzilla At least the trailers are short
-
@boomzilla Couldn't get around to watching it, but I've checked the credits music, and I don't like the arrangement of Wake Up they used there. In my opinion, they completely miss the point by starting it with "I think I heard a shot" . Of course you did, it's a Matrix movie!

Watched it yesterday. Not my idea, but I don't say no to going to cinema as a rule.
It's shit. An hour too long, fistfights are boring and tedious, special effects are meh and the plot is idiotic.
That said, it's a lot better than I expected and certainly better than 2 and 3.
-
Don't Look Up (2021)
It's okay. It has its moments, and it's certainly entertaining, but I expected more.
I wouldn't give it the 7.3 stars in IMDB.

My royal reviewer didn't like it much.

Red notice 2021
Utterly bland action movie that has stolen all it's scenes from better movies, and made them worse.Forgettable.

Action movie? I considered it a comedy.
Forgettable, absolutely. But I found it entertaining to fill the void. No regrets watching it.

People don't like blond children. After all, blond children might turn out to be the next Literal Hitler.
Though that's better than blonde children, which might turn out to be Reese Witherspoon.

It was a fun movie to watch with the kids one night, mainly because we like the cast.

I had watched this a couple weeks ago but forgot to put it in this topic. Nothing groundbreaking or particularly memorable but a fun movie.

@boomzilla I just started watching Cobra Kai (yes, I know I’m late) and it’s fun. I like siding with the scrawny, nerdy underdog, which was basically the premise of Karate Kid. This show makes that a lot harder because they keep it in flux who the “good guys” are (the main protagonist is the original antagonist), but it works out so far.
It’s also kind of a nerd fest, even though the guy keeps repeating that he hates “losers” and “nerds”. The main student’s nerd side kick is hilarious, at one point he wears a T-shirt saying “I’m silently correcting your grammar”.Also also, the actor playing Daniel apparently was 22 in the original Karate Kid?! He looked like 14.

I have that shirt (maybe not the same one, but a shirt that says that).

It’s a good “slogan,” except for the times people will ask why you’re not mentioning their various grammatical slip-ups.
-
@kazitor “silently”
-
@topspin
Something about that concept seems immensely baffling. Usually just a raised eyebrow or pointing to the relevant word suffices to get the point across, though.
-
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
After giving out movie spoilers on multiple occasions, Tom Holland convinces Doctor Strange to completely fuck up the universe because he failed to get into the university of his choosing. What feels like half an hour of fanservice precedes the climactic battle, and only ends up reiterating that Maguire did it best.
I feel like I could easily do this for No Time to Die, but then I'd feel compelled to do the rest of the Bond franchise and that almost deserves its own thread.

This is one of my favorite things about it. Everyone is dealing with shit imperfectly.

tl:dr; "You can't kill Bond and get away with it."
less tl:dr; "Bond almost gets killed, flirts awkwardly with Moneypenny, has a briefing where he can demonstrate super-obscure knowledge that not even the head of MI6 knows. He gets on a plane to an exotic location, meets some weird psychopath with a super-insane business plan, some stooges try to kill him, but they fail, leaving Bond to make some crass one-liner, finds at least one woman to sleep with, ideally more, before having a weird show-down with the psychopath's principle henchman, then making sure the psychopath dies, before bedding one of the women he'd met along the way. Completely by the book adventure that somehow manages to pretend the British empire isn't entire defunct."
-
@Arantor wait, was that “No Time to Die” or “the rest of the Bond franchise”?
-
@topspin Yes.

The Caller - 70s probably, from film grain. Or maybe cheap 90s. Featuring an
youngAnthony Hopkins?Malcolm McDowell?evil-voiced dude(i.e. less old)and an actress who probably also has a name. It has a plot and contains cinematography and isn't an utter piece of shit. Positive small integer number of stars. The recommended drinking game is based on the word "point".
-
The Jokers (1967)
A rather neat little heist movie with Oliver Reed and a rather played-straight Michael Crawford, except for the occasional Irish accent he pulls.
-
The entire recent Spanish trilogy that I wish I could remember the title of - something of the "Bones", perhaps something "of the Bones" even. Always entertaining to see what the rest of the family has been up to.
Detectoring movie, contains production values, positive small integer number of stars.
The drinking game word is "walnut".
-
Evil Toons, ca. who cares, a Fred Olen Ray opus. May predate Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Fucking terrible. Negative epsilon stars. Decent continuity.
The drinking game, as always for Fred, is ogling-based.
-
The Lost Tree
, slow horror. Exhibits understatedness, cinematography, and even mise-en-scene. Also Michael Madsen, but not for very long. Positive small real number of stars plus 2, minus 1 for Madsen. The drinking game is rewind-based.
-
The Ferryman
, featuring Gimli. Passable overt horror. Contains a notably beautiful murder - a (forgivably impossible) forehand beer-bottle smash with backhand throat-slash return using the stub. It would never work, sure, but what are movies for?
-
Reservoir Dogs
, mostly just some guys talking in a room. Good dialogue, low on action.
-
@dkf with notable appearances of the world’s smallest violin and K-Billy's Super Sounds of the 70s weekend.
