WTF is happening with Windows 11? And nothing else

But you've got to consider the situation from MS' point-of-view. If they just gave $10,000 to anyone who found a bug in Windows 10, they'd bankrupt the company in a week.
-
So far, a day on Windows 11. I can't really tell the difference between 10 and 11 except that it's a little snappier, and the taskbar is different.
Minecraft took a couple of hoops to jump through to find. Choco still works, so most of the setup was the same and easy. I had to manually kill a background edge process to install my password manager. That was the only difference from a recent ten install.
The laptop is running quieter and cooler, but I'm putting that down to a clean install without all the OEM garbage. The wifi is also much better, but it could be the OEM shite again. There was a bit of oddness with a USB-C hub. When it's plugged in, my wireless mouse and keyboard act funny. They were plugged into the hub yesterday on ten and just fine. Oddness that I'm not willing to explore.
All in all, I can't really tell the difference between 10 and 11.

Test IE11 and Edge Legacy using free Windows 10 they say?
at least one is Win10, but not with IE11
-
@TimeBandit it comes with IE11 as well as Edge, even though it doesn't say.

Seems like the first major patch to Windows 11 is to… update the Emoji‽
I guess the more they have their graphic designers working on that the less time they have to work on mess up the rest of the system.

Depends how you're defining 'major'. It's also a cumulative update that isn't just emoji.

Regardless of if you think this suit has merit, if they win, this means MS will have to stop shoving their self-advertising down our throat. And I think we can all agree that it'd be a good thing.

Yeah, instead they will nag you with 'choose your browser' screens. So much better.

It's worse. I was helping an elderly person who got sucked in during the upgrade to Windows 10. He had some three hundred or so gigs of family photos that OneDrive slurped up and immediately started trying to bill him for, despite that he already had a backup program (Carbonite I think? ) doing the needful.
It is almost impossible to tell OneDrive to fuck off and stop fucking the documents and pictures folders. Even after I did, OneDrive came back and tried "restoring" files and shitting all over his profile.
Worst experience ever, especially since one of the documents it Shit on was his balance and budgeting Excel workbook which was reverted to a six month old version!

Clicking "firefox" in a stupid choose your browser screen is indeed much better than stealthily hijacking my browser or constantly screaming "stop using firefox, edge is GOOD!".
If their behavior wasn't anti-competitive, they wouldn't have to resort to it to begin with.

Turn the setting in Onedrive off, copy the files back to their original location.

IME once you turn the backup feature off, that's it. It stays off.
I actually use OneDrive too, just not its backup feature.

Happened to me twice, first time after reboot, then again the next day when Windows updated.

It happens to everyone occasionally, but if it happens too often, you should probably see your doctor; there are pills that can help.
first time after reboot
Maybe you need another reboot. @Zerosquare, please do the needful.

Speaking of reboots, it seems sometimes that's necessary for embedded Chrome to pick up the idea that it's supposed to use Internet Explorer proxy settings (that it should have been using from the get-go).

Those are hard to come by. Uranium, or maybe just large amounts of nitroglycerin, should be sufficient.

Hey! Do I look Indian to you?
Are you a leopard (Panthera pardus) or jaguar (Panthera onca)? (Don't say you're a panther. "A black panther is the melanistic colour variant of the leopard (Panthera pardus) and the jaguar (Panthera onca). Black panthers of both species have excess black pigments, but their typical rosettes are also present.") If you're a leopard, you could very well be Indian.
Filed under: "Those black panthers all look alike to me."
-
Nice try, but I do identify as a jaguar, which are not found in India.
My avatar is actually a reference to this, which itself references the the actual animal:

Technically everything every business does is anti-competitive, as the explicit goal is to beat the competition. The question should be whether this particular anti-competitive action should be allowed or not. And the more time has passed since my open source hippie days, the more I'm convinced Microsoft has every right to bundle whatever software they want with their OS, as does everyone else.
Note that I said "should be". Because the actual question that will be considered by the European Commission is "do we like Microsoft enough to allow them to do the exact same thing everybody else does literally all the fucking time, or are we once again going to make up some bullshit and invent some new rules out of thin air that only Microsoft and nobody else will have to follow?"
-
@Gąska here’s the question, why doesn’t the EU consider Apple’s bundling of Safari the same problem as MS/IE?
-
Because Apple's market share of mobile devices is not high enough to be considered a monopoly, while MS' market share of desktop OSes is.
(I'm not saying this is right.)
-
@Arantor because you can't substitute any letter in Apple with $, therefore it's not an evil monopoly.

Anyway, there's a difference between making a better browser so I choose to use it and resetting my browser to theirs every time I blink.

The cloud syncing of the Desktop folder needs to be fixed. I understand why they do it, because people likes to spread all their documents and whatnot all over both their real and virtual desktops. But they could at least blacklist links, because when it auto-synced Desktop it downloaded an old Edge from there and renamed the new one to Copy of Edge.

Not really. What you're thinking of is "competitive".
We've built an entire industry around the idea of out-competing the competition without making your own offering any more competitive. It's called marketing.
Anyway, there's a difference between making a better browser so I choose to use it and resetting my browser to theirs every time I blink.
Agreed. But remember that EU has already ruled that merely having a browser pre-installed constitutes anti-competitive behavior.

Bundle? Absolutely. The more, the better. I don't care of this competition and GPL shit in the slightest. Only convenience matters to me.
Integrate? Fuck no. All free to remove, not coming back from the dead and not baked within the OS itself, and certainly not resetting any settings... and, oh ffs, Edge wants to open PDF-iles again, goddammit. Then again, it took an entire team five years to write a new Terminal.
And they did bundle this old version of curl with 3 critical vulns...
