Genetic algorithms are that too. And some people mix the two for more changing stuff at random power (and a PhD).
Aren't genetic algorithms a type of machine learning? I don't mean it's kinda similar, I mean the formal classification by academics.

@Gąska said in The Official Funny Stuff Thread™:
Aren't genetic algorithms a type of machine learning?
According to classifications known to me, they solve different kinds of problems: genetic algorithms are a kind of optimisers, e.g., "find
x
giving the least possible value ofy(x)
with definition ofy
known", while machine learning is more like "given past known values forx
andy
but no explicit functional relationship between them, find a way to predicty
from newx
values I'll give you in the future".You can use the former to do the latter, e.g. suggest a "general enough" function
y_hat(x; beta)
and minimize differences betweeny
andy_hat(x; beta)
as a function ofbeta
using genetic algorithms, but people prefer it when there's a closed-form solution that gives the optimalbeta
in one step. (For many usefuly
's, there isn't one.)
-
@aitap the classification I know is that machine learning is any kind of computer algorithm that modifies its answers based on prior results. Curve fitting is just one application.
Consider an algorithm that learns how to drive a car on a race circuit. Is it looking for a relationship between some x and some y? No. Is it a genetic algorithm? Maybe, maybe not. Is it machine learning? Regardless of the underlying algorithm I'd still say yes. Would you agree?

@Gąska said in The Official Funny Stuff Thread™:
Curve fitting is just one application.
Machine learning is all “curve fitting” except in a much higher dimensional space, much of which is really best expressed in terms of abstract symbols. The big problem with that is how to not match the (inevitably present) noise as well (this is the overfitting problem and almost all things that people make fun of AI over are due to it); the traditional mathematical approach is to use mathematician's intuition, but that's horribly bad at scaling up as the parameter space increases in dimensionality. So instead things like gradient descent algorithms are used, but those are prone to overfitting. (There are nuances for different types of neural network; they vary a lot.)
Genetic algorithms are about having some sort of generative process for going from a small description to an algorithm for some task, and a separate scoring function for computing how successful the approach is. Combined with some randomness and with the right choice of generative components, you get really very rapid convergence. (The selection of components to work with is tricky though.)
Combining these sorts of things properly is still a research-grade problem. The details of how it should be done are definitely not fully understood.

I wonder how many penis-related names they rejected before they decided to call these clams "geoduck":
-
@da-Doctah and it's still penis-related.
The name geoduck is derived from a Lushootseed (Nisqually) word gʷídəq[5][6] either a word composed of a first element of unknown meaning and əq meaning "genitals" (referring to the shape of the clam),[7] or a phrase meaning "dig deep",[8] or perhaps both, as a double entendre.

I wonder if the writers realized what they were doing when they
named one of the Native American characters in the "Ma & Pa Kettle" movie series "Geoduck" (the other was "Crowbar").(I also wonder if giant-clam diggers text each other 'duck pics.)

Women:
"Am I fat?"
"No! You're beautiful!"Men:
"Am I fat?"
"Dude, I know 5 fat people and you are 4 of them."I don't want friends to lie to me to either avoid insulting me or continuing my delusion. Though, I will say, that shouldn't be said in front of others.
I did have a friend that liked that about me, I wouldn't automatically take her side when telling me about an argument with her boyfriend.
I was pretty good at diffusing disagreements my big kids had with each other and with their father. I didn't usually take a side, I just asked them to think about why the other person did what they did and how they felt. By helping them to understand how the other person was feeling helped them consider the other persons actions less harshly.
People who are proud they are "brutally honest" (and this was me at some point) just really like being brutal. Kindness requires tact to be neutral (again something I have not been good at myself in the past) and provide the constructive feedback behind closed doors.
Not sure who said it first:
Praise in public; correct in private.
I was corrected (in private) by my boss because I was being too mean to the consultants from the other company. At that time, I was not able to maintain a neutral front when the other consultant said something stupid:
That doesn't even relate to what the user asked.
I had to learn how keep my emotions to myself.

@Benjamin-Hall for anti-tea attitude. (Why does our teacup not have a handle?)

The only teacup emoji in Unicode is teacup without handle

not have a handle
Because it is literally "teacup without handle". 🍵
And nobody thought to have "just a fucking teacup like normal you fucking assholes" was a valid enough idea to add in.
Your welcome.

Clearly, what is needed is a plain "cup" emoji, with modifiers for the contents (or lack thereof) in multiple colors (coffee (with and without cream), black tea, green tea, etc.) and handle (or lack thereof).

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Jean-Luc deserved to have a galvanized five-gallon bucket of flaming dry tea leaves every time he ordered "tea, Earl Grey, hot".
