Status: Got an e-mail from a recruiter asking me to fill an opening at a small .NET shop in Berea, Ohio. Split between onsite/remote, low pay (compared to DC) but excellent benefits and perks, good coworker community, working on developer tools.
It'd be a good fit except for two things. One, I'd have to relocate to Cincinnati, away from my family, friends, and fiancee. Two, I'm almost certain Inedo already turned me down for this job; having to pay a slave trader makes them less likely to hire than before, not more.

@Tsaukpaetra On the 4th floor of a 5-floor office building? And sure, my office has a window, but it's not in a corner or anything.
On the other hand, I've got a ton of cables all over the table.
Maybe I'll find out if the cleaners have been by last night. See if they "noticed" anything off.
: Nope. Our vacuum worked just fine once the sparks stopped.
Worse. There were no cleaners that night. So it's still a complete mystery.

There's significant precedent in the literature. I don't read that half of the literature, but it's there.

@Tsaukpaetra I should consider getting one or more trackballs. I have so many keyboards and mice cluttering my desk, I have no room to actually move the mice.
Get a theramin. Make it work as a 3D pointer. You'll be glad you did.

I prefer "in the field" to "not indoors", and "under high-visibility conditions" to "only during the day".

Nah, solid-state thermistor is good enough. I'm not an audiophile; I don't need my thermometer to sound warm and rich and gold-plated.
Seriously, . I just use public sources of weather info; they're close enough (except when they're obviously wrong, like saying it will start raining in a couple of hours, when it's already raining). I may have an old high/low recording thermometer somewhere in a box or bin of gardening stuff, but I'm not sure where. I'm not even sure it hasn't gotten broken in one of several house moves since the last time I used it.
-
Head canon: to save on the cost of a proper tube thermometer, @HardwareGeek taped a thermistor to a wall and when he wants to check the temperature, he simply touches the legs.

Also disappointed with the quality of Zoom filters. I saw all this hype about special effects and decided to try it out. Yeah. They flicker like crazy and don't turn your head or move anything near your eye or nose because it shuts off. How dumb/blind do people online have to be to fall for this and send gifts to a phony camwhore on YouTube?

It is my unyielding resolution that if devlopers were to actually play vidja games, we may see them better designed.
Like, sit down and take note of every annoyance. Then don't do that shit in yours.Aspiring writers, for example, are strongly encouraged to read a lot, to develop their vocabulary, grammar and structure.
Vidja devlopers? Seems like ain't nobody got time for that.

@Applied-Mediocrity said in The Official Status Thread:

Some of them play their own stuff, but by then internal cargo cult has taken hold so the many problems don't seem to be problems. Happens everywhere, not just in game dev.
For instance, I'm currently fixing a long-standing issue with items that can be held, in that it's impossibly unintuitive to position the relative transforms describing where the object goes when held. End result? There's two ways to specify this that are mutually incompatible, and half the items use one system and the other half use the other, and it's fucking nuts!
My solution is to unify the points specification under one array, auto-migrating the stupid version of it for those that haven't been fixed yet, and implementing an in-editor UI to actually do the adjustments intuitively (and easily!).
And I'm doing this mostly because I'm pissed off at having to wire up superfluous components to guess where the points should be and trial-and-error their placement to get the actual result I want.
But that's just for me. In theory the code fixes will be portable to in-game editing of said placements (for things like UGC) but that's still a glimmer in someone's mythical eye.
