The calculation stopped making sense to me when he did a shift between two infinite series to make addition more nice. Is that even allowed?
Totally cromulent, and a trick used quite a bit when working with infinite series. Assigning a value to a non-convergent series is the outright bogus bit. All the waffling about “got to keep going forever” is beside the point; the series doesn't converge.
I guess I now understand what the mathematicians were griping about with theoretical physics back when I was in college. They were very unhappy.
The point is that the value yielded by such tricks can actually be found in real-world applications. ζ(-3) pops up in calculating the Casimir Effect, for example.
The difference is that ζ is well defined while the 1+2+3+...=-1/12 stuff is handwavy non-sense when viewed as the limit of the series. Yes, you can define certain regularizations to arrive at this number, but you have to be rigorous with what that means and not pretend it's actually a convergent series.
Now back to our regularly scheduled funny stuff...

@topspin 1^-z+2^-z+3^-z+... converges when Re(z)>1. It grows to infinity when Re(z)<1, and does not converge when Re(z)=1.
The function it converges to when Re(z)>1 can be homomorphically extended to the complex plane except at z=1. Such extensions are unique.
However, it is not correct to then say 1+2+3+... sums to any specific value based on the homomorphic extension. The series diverges.

Axioms, are what happens when people just go "idkw, but ____ is true" in order to create the most consistent system.
Actually, there's an infinite collection of possible axiom schemes (this is the real meaning of the key result of Gödel) and as long as they don't result in outright contradictions, they're all valid. There's no finite axiom scheme that generates all other possible ones.

Oh, and btw, I don't know why, but I remember Numberphile basically starting by saying, "this is BS, but if we make this assumption, we get this weird number."
I think, intuitively, it's apparent to everyone that if you keep going right on the number line, and keep accelerating rightward, you won't end up left of where you started.

Looking back at the episode in question.
They didn't claim it was convergent.
They merely said that you COULD represent the series as this number with series manipulation. -1/12 represents the series.
However, like I pointed out, it creates paradoxes to do that.
I think they thought the episode was tongue in cheek, but too many people took it seriously.

Only if you ignore like.... everything about it other than shape.
Like skin contrast, size of nipple, etc.
You can pout all you want, but one is evolved to be a sexual stimuli (for the benefit of male and female) and the other hasn't.

You.... don't understand how evolution works do you?
No one is thinking anything.
At some point, enlarged breasts correlated to increased milk production.
Men that survived were the ones attracted to enlarged breasts.
In turn, women that were sought by the men were ones that had pre-pregnancy enlarged breasts.
Generations later, female breasts are simultaneously functioning as feeding offspring and sexual attraction.

The genes of the men survived more, through their offspring.
All those men and their offspring are dead (with notable exceptions).
