Also, I still don't know whether "unpaid overtime" is correct usage of the word.
Are you on
slaverysalary and thus getting a flat paycheck regardless of hours worked? All overtime is unpaid. Are you getting straight time for your overtime and wanting to bitch about not getting a premium rate for your overtime? Use the term "unpaid overtime" so that people listening to you bitch give you the maximum possible sympathy.
To be fair to @Gąska, salaries in Poland work differently. The standard labour law contract specifies 40 hours per week as full-time employment, for a fixed monthly payment. Any overtime (hours above the aforementioned norm) entitles the employee to additional pay (adjusted for things like work during holidays or at night).
This is separate from arrangements where the employee is paid per hour, which is what I would call working for a wage in our context.
The US concept of "salaried workers" is, to me, just yer bog standard example of American crazy.
Though many places do offer either time in lieu future PTO credit or straight time cash compensation when you do have to work significant overtime as a salaried employee. It kind of varies with how skilled the position is though — most of the abuses and infamy come from things like line management at a fast food joint.
One of the advantages of working for government is that anything about the 7 (not 8) hour day is considered overtime which can be paid or for comp time.
I would always take it in comp time. But the last year or so everything has to be approved before hand.
And out timekeepers bitch about putting the exact hours I worked, ok 8:54 - 5:02. Sweet baby Jesus, why ?

The American approach is "$X for 40 hours per week of your time, except when it's 60 hours, or maybe 80".
I mean, I get the business models behind gym memberships, say, where you're banking on the customer being too to get their money's worth, but it's not like salaried employees tend to work less than full time on a regular basis, is it?In my career (12, 13? years) I have never once worked 60hrs in a week. Only twice have I broken 50 hrs in a week and one of those was my fault. The other I volunteered (truly, there was no expectation from anyone that I stay and help out) to help a colleague who was in a bind. Looking back, my average weekly hours are probably somewhere around 43-44, but I offset that with no questions when I take a 2hr lunch or have to leave at 1pm for a dentist appointment.
People let themselves get exploited far to often and that gives the wrong impression about what most businesses really expect from their salaried employees.
Yeah, when I was young and dumb, I've not left the office until 4AM but still mostly expected to arrive at my normal time.
And while we did get something for extra hours, it was extra hours above 42.5 (after 9/11 they implemented 8.5 hour day with no OT benefit). One week I worked 40, the next week I worked 45 or whatever.

I've worked a handful of over nighters before. Typically when we were working on a proposal presentation for the next day. Haven't done that in at least 10 years though.

Also true. But just because you're getting your necessary caffeine via IV doesn't mean you can't have a good cup of espresso (or five) on the side.
-
@Gąska said in Things that remind you of WDTWTF members:
@GOG also worth mentioning that in Poland, employers forcing you into undocumented unpaid overtime (it's illegal but nobody cares) is much more common than paid overtime, especially in low-paying jobs.
It think it's just commies pretending employers were holding a gun to their heads. Actually they're just parties to free contracts with doubly-free workers

Hah no. These people (bless their hearts) couldn't code their way out of a paper bag. Maybe 2 of them could write any code at all--the robotics and the main programming teacher. Even such things as "successfully using a browser" and "figuring out the smart board software" took training days. And still mostly they weren't very good at it. But coffee and tea were drunk in profusion.

To be honest, I don't think I'd be able to code myself out of a paper bag either.
Like, is there a programmable device in there with me? How would that help anyway?

Theys ay compiles, but it seems to really be transpiling...
As fast as C (V's main backend compiles to human readable C)
And they they compare to languages that actually compile.
If they want to say that V bootstraps as fast as X, then they should include the time for the Clang bootstrap then. That's a bit too marketingy for my taste.. But seems like a decent language.

V is very similar to Go.
That’s a lot of promises there. More than I’m tempted to easily believe. That being said, if their magic “translates latest C++ to human readable V” project was actually ready instead of “complete soon”, I’d give it a try. (Or maybe not, because ain’t nobody got time for that, but still kind of interested what their silver bullet would produce)
