@PleegWat Bob is certainly too dumb to register that something is an insult.
that's WIS tho. And as much CHA as INT, depending on the insult. Although I suppose these fine distinctions may be taxing to your lyrical soul.
-
@Mason_Wheeler, I'd like to do an investigation/nature/arcana/whatever check to try to figure out what these things are. What kind of check would you like me to roll and/or what kind of check might actually reveal useful knowledge (assuming a successful roll, which is not a good assumption given how much DMbot seems to hate me)?
-
@HardwareGeek Pick Nature, Arcana, or Religion, whichever one your character would be most likely to reach for when checking out something like this.
-
@Mason_Wheeler I'll pick arcana, since I have the highest bonus and best chance of getting a good roll.
-
@HardwareGeek said in RPG: The End War (OOC thread):

Knowing what kind of check to make is useful knowledge the DM doesn't have to give up.

Flagged for metagaming.
-
@error he knows magic. It makes sense IC to consider magical origins
-
@error Well, my character is a wizard, so arcana is going to be his go-to check for anything that appears to involve magic.
-
@Mason_Wheeler is there a way up to where the caster was?

I put on my robe and wizzard hat
-
@Jaloopa Not without climbing gear or appropriate magics.
-
@Mason_Wheeler Someone was also looking at whatshisname. Our jailer.
-
@PleegWat Thanks. I saw that but overlooked it while replying to other stuff.
-
@PleegWat Panapos was looking at Thad, or what used to be Thad. Our magnificent DM has not yet told me what Panapos found, not even whether Thad is actually dead. (The only information we got about him was that he "didn't look like he'll be getting up any time soon", which is not quite the same as "he's never getting up again".) Note that if Panapos did find anything valuable and sufficiently small, he wouldn't have bothered mentioning it to the rest of the party.
-
@HardwareGeek Thad was actually further down on my list but I first decided to hand the letter to Ruven (@PotatoEngineer ) so was kind of waiting for him to respond.
-
@Mason_Wheeler did you say we also have all the miscellaneous starting equipment from our class and background?
-
@Jaloopa Yeah, basic starting gear and personal effects were in the chest.
-
@Mason_Wheeler said in RPG: The End War:
@Jaloopa The cart is in shambles. Some large sections of its construction are still intact, but one of the axles is shattered, the front seat is split in three pieces, and some of the bars are coming loose. As
AeronJillian mentioned, it's likely not good for much more than firewood.Wrong name
[DM note: party members could have scrounged around to grab pieces of wreckage as improvised weapons, which would have been faster than searching through the chest.]
1d4 and since it's not finesse I wouldn't have been able to use sneak attack.

Argh. I looked at the @mention rather than the person who posted that.
-
@PleegWat If previous players in the first turn had had trouble accessing the chest, I probably would have gone for an improvised weapon.

If previous players in the first turn had had trouble accessing the chest
Well, one of them failed a perception check to find anything useful in the chest.

Yes, but @Mason_Wheeler didn't mention the fact there was a lock on it until after combat. If it had been locked, we'd have had to force the lock, or to search Thad and/or the wreckage for the key first since neither Aeron nor Jillian had their thieves tools handy.
-
@HardwareGeek Everyone managed to find something. The check was to find anything useful quickly enough. When the check failed, I rolled a random piece of equipment that they managed to spot. For one character, it was their armor, rather than anything that would be helpful at the moment.

@Gąska I was setting up for a slower process of talking you along. My first move was to pretend that this was business as usual.
The way I envisioned it was that by asking Rowan for help, I also communicated to him that everyone but me are prisoners, so the party wouldn't have to only convince the blockhead Bob but also the rather smart and very righteous paladin to let the prisoners go loose.
That letter got in the way though.
-
@Mason_Wheeler Fine. See edit.

Yeah, I don't think he's been online yet since end-of-combat. If he had been, it would also have played out differently because I wouldn't have been able to go digging in the chest as quickly.
-
@PleegWat Yes, unfortunately things seem to be a bit stalled until the character who actually has some clue what's going on, and who knows of a place nearby where you could find shelter and heal up from your injuries, gets back.
-
@Mason_Wheeler I'm kind of waiting for him now for that reason.

@Mason_Wheeler said in RPG: The End War:
For Nigrim and Panapos, robes, a dagger, a staff, and a spell focus. Panapos's spellbook is also inside.
I overlooked this earlier. What kind of staff? Magical? I hadn't planned on a staff as part of my inventory, and of course I don't know what you have in mind.
-
@HardwareGeek Probably a mundane quarterstaff, from your class starting weapon choices.
-
@HardwareGeek Being of low rank, arcane recruits are issued a simple quarterstaff.
-
@Mason_Wheeler Of course. Fair enough, and Panapos is proficient with it, although he much prefers attacking from a distance.
-
-
@Gąska Oh, be honest, he's probably too dumb to realize that's an awful roll.
-
@Mason_Wheeler What's the source of randomness for DMbot? Its distribution seems skewed.
-
@DMBot roll 30d6
-
@Mason_Wheeler
result: 104
30d6[104 (2, 3, 2, 2, 1, 5, 4, 6, 6, 3, 4, 2, 4, 2, 1, 3, 3, 1, 5, 6, 1, 3, 6, 2, 4, 6, 5, 5, 2, 5)]
-
-
@Mason_Wheeler Well, of course it's fair to the DM!
-
@dmbot roll 30d6/30
-
@PleegWat
result: 4
(30d6[106 (6, 4, 5, 4, 3, 3, 3, 4, 2, 4, 2, 4, 1, 5, 3, 1, 1, 6, 4, 5, 2, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 3, 5, 6)] / 30)[4]
-
@HardwareGeek Randomness source is System.Random. Not cryptographically strong or anything, but good enough for casual use.
-
@Mason_Wheeler fighters are supposed to also get a crossbow, 20 bolts and dungeoneer's kit. Do I find those in the equipment chest?
-
@Gąska You kidding? What kind of CO would trust Bob with a gun?!?
-
@Mason_Wheeler okay, I'll swap those for hand axes. Although to be fair, rather than shooting, I planned on selling it and the pike and getting a glaive. And crossbows are quite a bit more valuable than hand axes.
-
@Gąska Yeah, a hand axe would be available. Not the dungeoneer's pack, though, as they're supposed to be soldiers, not dungeon-raiding adventurers.
-
@Mason_Wheeler Speaking of crossbows, Panapos is proficient with light crossbow. Although he is also proficient with dagger and quarterstaff, as far as non-magical weapons go, crossbow is his weapon of choice, and he is hoping there will be an opportunity to acquire one in the not-too-distant future.
-
Question to more experienced players: is Heavy Armor Mastery feat (-3 non-magical weapon damage taken) worth it in mid-to-late game?
-
All other non-casters got multiple sets of weapons, makes sense to give Bob something.
