Sorry to derail this thread about dice bots with talking about a game, but @Mason-Wheeler, what is your philosophy about material components of spells? I know some DMs just hand-wave them in favor of fun game play. My wizard has only one spell with a material component (I deliberately avoided them), and if you are a stickler for material components, I have a plausible (I think) backstory that would give him an abundant supply of that component — probably not unlimited, but ISTM probably as many as he'd need for a single campaign. He carries a pocket full of them into battle, and has a bag of them back in his tent.
The item is "a short length of copper wire", which I envision as maybe an inch or two, so he can carry quite a few in his pocket. The reason he has so many (in addition to copper wire being something one could probably buy in most any town) is that, as a Deep Gnome, basically his entire race are miners, and I propose that his clan operated a copper mine. Ready availability of copper (as well as the general usefulness of the spell) is why he made Message one of his cantrips.

@HardwareGeek Anything cheap and readily available can be assumed to be at hand on demand, unless otherwise noted. Any expensive components will need to be tracked.
-
@Mason_Wheeler Copper is tricky. It's a semi-precious metal in the current international economy - you can take and make payments in copper exchange bars, for instance.
-
@Gribnit Sure, but I'd hazard a piece of copper string has similar value to a copper coin, which is the lowest denomination of currency.
-
@PleegWat coin copper is usually adulterated, tho

@Mason_Wheeler I'll play the Paladin. With two rogue-types and a wizard, somebody has to take the front line. Combining "the healer" and "the front line" into a single character is, of course, the height of folly, but I am that fool.
Please keep in mind that soldier-specific character notes (no starting equipment, provide me with a recent transgression) don't apply to the creation of your character.

@Mason-Wheeler, does the special rule on starting equipment cover all items, or only actual equipment? What about specific equipment granted by class or background, like thieves' tools?
-
@Mason_Wheeler Cool. How realistic is the military command structure? Will we be operating more-or-less at our own discretion, or will there be a CO giving us orders?
I think a smart CO would see my character's role like this: He's pretty much the definition of a "squishy" wizard (he's a bit on the small side, even by gnome standards), and it would be wasteful to have him squished in the first round of combat. Apart from dagger and quarterstaff, he's utterly useless at melee combat, so putting him in the front line would be dumb. He has pretty good (for a low-level wizard) ranged attack spells, as well as being proficient with a couple of ranged weapons. He doesn't have any healing magic, but he is proficient in medicine. And he has Message as a cantrip, which means he can telepathically relay orders from the CO (or other messages) to other soldiers on the battlefield and replies back without the enemy overhearing. So ISTM the CO, if there is one in your game plan, would keep him nearby as a sort of adjutant (not necessarily outranking his comrades, just assisting the CO), attacking at range, and acting as a messenger and medic when needed.

Consider the weight.
A pocket full of little pieces of copper wire wouldn't weigh more than a pound or two (1/2 - 1 kg), perhaps less, depending on how often he thinks he'll need to cast this spell. Maybe another 5 kg back in the tent.

@HardwareGeek said in WTDWTF RPG game pre-sign-up and shit:

In a world where some soldiers can shoot fire from their fingertips, I'd imagine armies work a bit differently
-
@Jaloopa not really that differently. infantry still wants to turtle, cavalry's primary weapon is still momentum, and wizards end up being way, way better archers / siege weapons.
-
@error said in WTDWTF RPG game pre-sign-up and shit:
Correct, this looks nothing like how commands work.
Hmm, then make a different command that can do multiple rolls (provided you ask it to in the right way, I suppose).

Evaluates a dice expression. Examples:
2d10: rolls two D10s, adding the result together
1d6+5: adds 5 to the result of a D6 roll
1d20-1: subtracts 1 from the result of a D20 roll
1d10*3: rolls a d10 and multiplies the result by 3
1d6/2: rolls a D6 and divides by 2, rounding to the nearest integer
3d6k2: rolls three D6s, keeping the top 2 results, adding them together
2d8r2: rolls two D8s, rerolling any results of 2 or below once, adding the results togetherSuffixes:
with advantage: rolls the result twice, yielding the higher value
with disadvantage: rolls the result twice, yielding the lower value
