@Mason_Wheeler Considering the 'equipment shall be provided' rule.
I figure my character would have taken some possessions with her when she enlisted (based on the starting items in my background). Should I list these items on the sheet?
-
@PleegWat Yeah, go ahead and list minor personal possessions.
-
@Mason_Wheeler The vexed issue of contraband arises.
-
@error, could you start a separate thread for the dice discussion, and preferably ban the bot from this thread? Clearly, there are hundreds of things to say about it, which makes it rather tricky to find the six times that Mason_Wheeler said something significant about the campaign.
@HardwareGeek, according to standard 5E component rules, all material components that don't have a listed cost are free, as long as you have the piece of adventuring equipment called "a material component pouch." (Or a spellcasting focus, depending on the class. Same effect.) So the copper wires are free, the small bit of bat guano is free, the "small ivory statue of a hippogriff flipping the bird, worth at least 15gp" is not free. In short, 5E has taken the running joke that is material components and explicitly turned it into a joke, rather than a cruel inventory management minigame that is sometimes inflicted by evil GMs and sometimes not, thus giving you another source of Stockholm Syndrome.

So the materials are just flavor, for the most part?
-
@error bat guano? Definitely flavor.

except when they're absolutely not. The material cost for resurrection has historically been one of the balances.

What about not-so-minor possessions, but which I wouldn't expect the army to supply, like the wizard's spellbook and pouch/focus? But not, I'd guess, the starting weapon (quarterstaff or dagger) and pack?
-
@Mason_Wheeler OK. My background states:
Equipment: A disguise kit, simple tools for grooming and contraception, a set of common or fine clothes, and a pouch containing 10 gp.
I'm listing thieves' tools (class) and the disguise kit separately, though I figure all listed parts of the thieves tools save the lockpicks could double as part of her cosmetics/grooming kit.
I'm also including some simple earrings based on her weakness for jewellery - she'd certainly have owned some and wouldn't have left all of it behind.
-
@Mason_Wheeler any globals like uniforms, army contraband regs, army insignia regs, blankets, rifle, rifle name, frightened kid from the Bronx, etc.?
-
@Gribnit I figure list those items you had with you when you joined up, and Mason will handle the rest.
-
@PleegWat well, I suggest Bronxie.

@PleegWat Otherwise there's bot owners and bots. I don't recall how exactly it's set up, and it may have changed since the migration.
-
So I guess I should abandon dev on the roll module for error_bot?
-
@error Nope! Two implementations calls for an interoperablity standard!
-
@error I figured, if it's so tricky and counter-architectural to batch-process multiple commands, I'd just code up something that's designed that way from the start.
