discussion at dict.leo.org tells me that's how you translate it but it feels too literal to actually be an English idiom?!
Sometimes the English language goes all literal on you, in order to lull you into a false sense of security.
It's just weird because it's exactly the idiom we use in German and reading this my first impression was it was just a bad German translation of someone who doesn't know any better.
-
-
@topspin Nope. In this case, it's exactly the right translation.

Can't speak for other Romance languages, but in Portuguese it's also the same idiom.

I just convinced some people they should ask our customers if they tried turning a device off and on again before replacing it

Status: I'm waiting for an important phone call so I temporarily disabled blocking unknown callers. Of course first I get a scam call. After she starts her speech that she's from social services yada yada, I hang up. But she immediately called again from the same number. So I accept the call and put the phone aside. She kept saying "hello" and "can you hear me" for about a minute before hanging up. Way longer than it should've taken her. But then she calls yet again, and after I "pick up", she stays there talking to herself for yet another minute!

If you weren't waiting for a call, sounds like the perfect opportunity for trolling... (when I get those, they're always a recording. Don't know when I last heard a real person on a spam call)
-
@dcon I considered that, but even under normal circumstances I'm just too

I'd put Lenny as the default "greeting" for my voicemail spam box.

@Zenith I want to strangle these people. My problem is it sent my receipt to the wrong e-mail. Now this potted plant on Twitter, after two hours, says I haven't logged in for two years and if I tried to make the change myself. No, moron, I haven't logged into anything in at least two years.
Edit: Good Lord, this just keeps going. I try to recover my user name, which I'm sure doesn't exist on a non-existent account, and it says it's unrecognized. After a second time, it locks me out. Buried deep within the help maze was info on logging into their ISP-provided e-mail, which I haven't done since right after I set up the account 10+ years ago, and that's broken too.
-
@Zenith Miraculously, I got into my ISP e-mail account, only because it was before every password had to be a stroke victim's last words transcribed through a McDonalds drive-thru speaker. So I tried to recover this account I'd supposedly been in back in 2018 via e-mail lookup. My Comcast e-mail, nope, my ISP e-mail, nope, my parents' e-mail, nope. I'm out of e-mails to try. You know, because I've never set up said account. Now they're insisting I create a new account, to reset the info I changed in an account that doesn't exist.
How about you stop fucking up billing, CenturyLink?
MSDN, Comcast, CenturyLink, I'm afraid to ask who's next?

I'm actually currently unable to update an expired payment method for a preorder there. The website is still completely inaccessible on desktop and the view keeps resetting on phone.
Edit: Mother fuck...the order it couldn't process yesterday because there was something wrong with my card magically worked today with no intervention on my part...

If the connection does not have the fingerprint
ssh-rsa 1024 5d:5b:0f:c5:4f:54:53:10:d5:86:49:a7:9b:d3:f8:b5
do not trust it!

Anyone recommend a minimalist Linux I can run Docker in? Something that doesn't require gigs of disk would be preferred...

You don't understand. Why copy the swap partition at all?
Also, I wanted the best possible chance (Narrator: it still failed) of restoring the image to correct-working status.
You mean the whole disk image? I sure hope so, because the words "working" and "not working" don't even make sense in context of swap alone. But cloning the disk partition by partition is far from the best approach.

Damn Small Linux? I never used it, but I heard it's damn small.

You want a minimalist Linux to run Docker containers on it, or you want a minimalist Linux to run inside Docker?

@TimeBandit if I were to bet, I'd say he's setting up a separate VM for every Docker container.

Yes I'm copying the whole disk. The partition program apparently still does it by partition regardless of which I select.
I think the underlying actual problem is these fucktards expect the UEFI to be able to boot from an ext4 partition, which I've never seen before and is definitely not working.

That's the trouble with trying to find such a distro. Google suggests all the Alpine and Core or whatever but those are Docker images!
Fucking turtles, man...

Last week status: I'm not moving enough in this fricking WFH pandemic. I was wondering if I have low blood pressure because of general fatigue, dizziness when standing up, limbs falling asleep, etc. Worrisome.
I have similar symptoms. I've still been running roughly a half marathon every night at the gym, so I can't blame lack of movement. If I stand up suddenly, I get lightheaded (almost fainting) and the room spins a bit.
I have fainted from this (years) in the past, and busted myself pretty good (I had to get my head stapled shut). If anything, it seems like it's getting more frequent.
Blood labwork all looked good last time, except for low hemoglobin and creatinine levels.

status When I took the dogs for a walk last night, there was a letter on my porch. (That's odd - the letters I dropped on the table in the afternoon were the same number I pulled out of the box...) Hmm. Looks a little worn... This morning I opened it. It was my 2019 W2. Wonder what it's been doing for the last year... (I didn't miss it because I downloaded a pdf. I thought I was on electronic-only delivery.)

Thanks, I’m already a self-diagnosed hypochondriac. And I hate it when the doctors don’t take me seriously, so I don’t need more things to worry about.
(I’ve non-seriously contemplated having the Dr. put on my ID so at least the ones other than my primary care physician think it’s an MD, call me “colleague” and take me a little more seriously. But alas, )
