By the time it was legal for me to drink, I'd already had enough drunken blackouts that I wasn't really interested in another.
In fact, I still avoid the stuff most of the time, due to those teenage experiences.

One day someone will convince me that drinking any amount of alcohol will be worth it at all...

@Tsaukpaetra drinking is like big explosions. There's zero positives and many negatives, but that's not the point.

Frankly explosions are pretty boring to me as well...
Edit to add: my father will often recount a story when I was five or so when grandpa died and they did a 21 salute where I supposedly shouted "cool!!!". Five-year-old me has since matured past the momentary fascination with guns.

Why would you want to spend your 21st in a bar?
Yeah, don't you have video games to play?
No, I mean, bottled alcohol is 10x cheaper. And with the amounts you see at finally-legal-to-drink birthdays, it adds up very quickly.
(I'm guessing legal age in your country is below 21.)
No, it was 21 at the time, I just didn't have any desire to go out and get plastered.

@Parody I guess things are different when drinking age is closer to when people actually start drinking (18 here, so only 3-4 years behind reality).

Wow.
https://www.frazerconsultants.com/2016/10/american-gun-salutes-and-military-funerals/
21-Gun Salutes
One major difference is that a 21-gun salute is typically performed with cannons rather than rifles, and the cannons are fired 21 times rather than three times. The other major difference is that 21-gun salutes are reserved only for the President of the United States, former presidents, presidents-elect, chiefs of state, heads of government, and reigning monarchs. They are saluted upon their arrival, and only at funerals in the case of a U.S. presidential death.

It's more personality and experiences; see @error and @Tsaukpaetra's responses above. About the only times I drink alcohol are weddings and New Year's, and then just to be polite during toasts.

I actually have this idea that kids are really starting to drink at a later age then when I was young. Drinking age here (Netherlands) is now 18, used to be 16.
I believe I was 13 when I started going out and drink. That was a pretty average age for that, at that time (early 80s). And not secretly, most parents knew.
When I now look at my nieces and nephews, and kids of friends, most of them are 15-16 when they admit to drinking. They do drink more though, or maybe my memory plays tricks on me. ;-)

@error anecdotal, naturally, since I don't have a signed-verified memory of that event so can neither confirm nor deny.

Culture also plays a big part, I think. For example, if you were on Polish wedding and only drank toasts out of politeness, by midnight you'd barely be able to stand up.

True, though personal preferences cause conflicts there. I'd switch to diet soda or water after sipping my way through a half-glass of champagne, if I didn't decide to just leave soon after dinner. (I get tired quickly at big group gatherings and rarely enjoy them.)

In the system dependency location, where most users can't write, or in the per-user dependency location, which is typically manifestly wrong for many Perl scripts? It's complex and annoying to figure out all the details.
