I declare this topic to be about fashion.
@by-joining-this-group-you-agree-to-be-mentioned-randomly-for-no-reason-is-that-okay-yes-no What is your favorite alternative to stuffing all your personal items in pants pockets? I usually carry a backpack, but it's not socially acceptable in other settings than 100% casual, laptop bags are the wrong shape for anything that's not a laptop, and fanny packs are small and feel weird.
-
@Gąska I just stuff it into pockets anyway. But I don't carry much stuff normally:
- Wallet (slim, just the necessities)
- Keys (clipped to a belt loop)
- Phone
- Hankerchief
-
@Gąska I have been summoned, and so I appear.

I don't carry anything else than that, but that already makes the pockets look very bulky. I mean front pockets in jeans pants.

Yeah, when I got notification I was wondering just what the hell you'd have to say about fashion.
-
What is your favorite alternative to stuffing all your personal items in pants pockets?
Cargo pants!..
I usually carry a backpack, but it's not socially acceptable in other settings than 100% casual
...I am not looking forward to having to live in environments where cargo pants aren't considered acceptable.
laptop bags are the wrong shape for anything that's not a laptop, and fanny packs are small and feel weird.
What about messenger bags? Do they fit the dress code? Since handbags usually do, so should messenger bags. I used to have one, but decided that overstuffing it like I did leads to back problems because of asymmetric load.
I also know a guy who just stuffs everything in tactical military hip pouches on his belt / leg clip thingy, but that's definitely far in the realms of casual.
-
@Gąska I normally wear pants with extra pockets on the legs, but my wallet is very thin (no thicker than the phone). Phone to the left, wallet on the right, hankerchief folded nicely in a back pocket. Keys on belt.

AFAIK cargo pants were never acceptable in business/church/family visit/dating context.

I'll need to check this out. Thanks for Google keywords. I'll have to consult my fashion expert, but that should do.
Since handbags usually do, so should messenger bags.
At least over here, handbags aren't acceptable men's accessory.

What is your favorite alternative to stuffing all your personal items in pants pockets?
Purse works okay, but I usually don't have many "personal items" on my person.
I got my keys, wallet, and phone. Keys on the belt, which if there are belt loops there will be pockets.
Otherwise, lanyard pouch.

I don't very much care for it.

E_NO_BACKPACK does not compute.

@Gąska Who needs an alternative? My pockets are so big they can fit a Nintendo Switch.

Someone living in a society.

I have consistently ignored that rule in all 4 contexts you mentioned and it's worked out for me so far. Screw people who hate cargo pants!

alternative to stuffing all your personal items in pants pockets
It's about the only privilege we men are left with. Why do you want an alternative to that?
laptop bags
That's where I put the laptop and anything that doesn't fit in pockets.
It's pretty much with me all the time.

@Gąska I got a jacket altered to have extra pockets, including pockets with pockets.

@Gąska What is your favorite alternative to stuffing all your personal items in pants pockets?
Trousers!
And, well, more pockets is always a good start. I take a backpack with me everywhere though with my outdoor clothes in it (you never know when you might need them here, even in summer ...) and I've not found anywhere that it's unacceptable to bring that. You might have to leave it in a cloakroom but you should be able to fit all the stuff you need for a single indoor venue in your normal pockets anyway.

I generally consider messenger bags to be the casual version of a briefcase.

This. Also, I have cargo pants of varying levels of nice / dress. Like, the black ones always look too dressy in a casual setting. Eventually they all turn into work pants (i.e., home improvement, gardening, etc) as they get worn out.

^This. Of course, going on a date in the worn-out khaki cargo pants you use for home improvement work is probably not a good idea. (Unless the setting requires such outfits.) But there are nice cargo pants as well.
-
@dfdub I have a couple pairs that were designed as cop pants. Wore them to work for a while.

I wonder what the world will be like in a decade when @fbmac necroes this thread. Hello future people!
Laptops will no longer require a backpack to lug home. So the error
E_NO_BACKPACK
will have been obsoleted.

And ponies have pockets! Some bigger than others...

I don't carry around enough stuff, day to day, to ever warrant anything more than my pockets. But on the rare occasion where I do have to carry more stuff I use my messenger bag. Nobody has ever questioned it.

Business briefcase. Plenty of models to choose from.
I mean, that's what my fashion-conscious friends use, I don't care and go with a backpack everywhere.

@Gąska When it's not casual, I wear a jacket with even more pockets to stuff things in. I generally avoid putting my wallet and phone anywhere except in pockets, to prevent theft. Seems successful so far (I've never had it stolen, pretty much all my friends had at least once).

As a counterpoint, the only time I got my phone (and wallet) stolen was when I had them in pockets. Though it was pockets on the legs like @Benjamin-Hall mentioned up-thread, which I guess made it easier to access to the thief. Though the thief was good enough to just casually bump into me as I got on the train, so I'm not sure it would have been different with other types of pockets. Also leg pockets are rather far down so the fact he could manage that without having to bend down makes me actually admire his skills. And hate him, also.
On the topic of skilled thieves, I was once in a casual crowd (something like a busy square on a nice summer evening) with a friend of mine who had his wallet in his hand -- for basically the same reason as @Gąska's question, because he had no other place to carry it. At some point he looked at his hand and saw that he was holding a balled-up sock, and not his wallet anymore! The thief managed to switch the two without him noticing, at all.
As to @Gąska's question, except in summer I wear some sort of jacket (or coat in winter), which I always choose based on it having pockets to store stuff. In summer, I use a
handbagmessenger bag.

-
Seconding messenger bags. They come in a bunch of shapes and forms, so there's some freedom to adapt to personal taste / need. I prefer to get the slightly athletic ones that have an additional strap across the front for better stability when biking or walking briskly for a bit (i.e., you have the main strap that goes e.g. from left hip/waist to right shoulder, and then you can attach a second strap mid body to right hip/waist).
-
I like cargo pants, and I keep most of my stuff in pockets in either my pants or my jacket. Poor pocket space is a deal breaker for both pants and jackets for me. But I also have messenger bags, backpacks and such for when I really need to carry a lot of stuff. A backpack is enough for a week of clothes for me, plus toiletry and toys.
Since I ride bikes and have proper leathers which have a definitive lack of pocket space, I also have a thigh bag and tank bags that work like messenger bags. And a huge on wheels gear bag for protective gear and clothes for race weekends.
-
@cvi Backpacks worn on both shoulders are more ergonomic, though. Messenger bags will always have uneven weight distribution. My bent frame really hates lugging laptop bag around for prolonged amounts of time. Of course, people who don't have spine made of silly putty might consider that insignificant .
-
@Applied-Mediocrity I don't carry around laptops that often anymore, so that helps. But, you're right, if you typically have to lug around something heavy, a backpack is probably more ergonomic.

That's what the velcro on the cargo pants is for.
