@izzion I'm surprised that Shopify is in there. I was under the impression they've been making money hand over fist for years
Yeah, kind of.
- Total revenue in the third quarter was $390.6 million, a 45% increase from the comparable quarter in 2018.
- Gross profit dollars grew 45%, to $216.7 million, compared with $149.7 million recorded for the third quarter of 2018.
- Operating loss for the third quarter of 2019 was $35.7 million, or 9% of revenue, versus a loss of $31.4 million, or 12% of revenue, for the comparable period a year ago.
- Net loss for the third quarter of 2019 was $72.8 million, or $0.64 per share, compared with $23.2 million, or $0.22 per share, for the third quarter of 2018. Net loss for the third quarter of 2019 includes a tax provision of $48.3 million. This provision is primarily due to a one-time capital gain triggered by the transfer of regional relationship and territory rights from our Canadian entity to regional headquarters, which allows us to develop and maintain merchant and commercial operations in their respective regions as we expand internationally.
Definitely a decent amount of revenue.

So it's just a malicious "app"... there's no trick, it literally just asks users for full access and hopes they'll say yes (and a lot of them probably will).

that's 99.9995% of all phising.
always has been, always will be.
ask the user to give you the keys to the kingdom in exchange for a gif of cats dancing, or porn, or anything else they think will interest the user enough to hand over the keys to the kingdom.

Yeah, basically. It never shows you its page and all you see is the actual login, which is itself legit. So warning people to not use their passwords on other sites won't protect you (or more likely someone less technically competent than the people reading TDWTF).

So warning people to not use their passwords on other sites won't protect you (or more likely someone less technically competent than the people reading TDWTF).
Warning people not to approve adding application/add-in to their account they didn't explicitly select and request to be added would, though, because that screen still does get shown.
I, however, also see at least two issues that are Microsoft's fault:
According to PhishLabs, the app that generates this request was created using information apparently stolen from a legitimate organization.
The OpenID Connect server can, and to some extent does, check the target URI. This verification for applications requiring wide access should probably be stricter so the URI can't be changed without reasonable trace to the real world (if someone just wants user identity, it should probably be allowed without much hassle as it is useful for implementing single-sign-on and the risk is low).
What’s more, Tyler said the malicious app they tested was not visible as an add-in at the individual user level; only system administrators responsible for managing user accounts could see that the app had been approved.
Well, ? Why in bloody hell does the user not see a list of permissions they gave with an option to revoke them? That just makes no sense in bloody hell or anywhere else. It was the user who gave the permission, they should be able to revoke it.

@boomzilla I tought up such an attack way back in the dark mists of youth, surprised it isn't used more often.

We have computed the very first chosen-prefix collision for SHA-1. In a nutshell, this means a complete and practical break of the SHA-1 hash function, with dangerous practical implications if you are still using this hash function. To put it in another way: all attacks that are practical on MD5 are now also practical on SHA-1.

What the analyst says:
A new report from a Morgon Stanly analyst states that HP will soon move away from selling printer ink at high prices.
To make this shift, the company will begin charging more for its printers as a way to balance out its income. What'll probably happen:
HP will charge more for its printers, while continuing to overcharge for ink

y'all still buy ink?
-says the fox that has spent over 200$ in printer materials this last 20 days alone.... granted it's filament for FDM printers (yes plural now) but still-
-
@Vixen Not really. I've got a toner cartridge that I bought when my printer first started complaining about low toner, and... it's still in its box.

No, the twice a year I need to print something I just do so at work.

“I have no delusions that it’s going to pass. I wouldn’t probably vote for it myself,” he told the Times Argus.

@TimeBandit It's just phytoestrogens (for plants), which studies have shown have no effect on estrogen levels in humans. So, don't worry, you'll have plenty of free time to finish abandoned and forgotten projects.

From the summary I read of it in Dutch news, I'm sceptical of the significance. A lot of things get said which can sound damning when pulled out of context, and you'd have to compare how often such sentiments are expressed about the MAX compared to other planes.

@anonymous234 Explosives are the standard tool for extinguishing fires of oil and natural gas wells, so makes sense to try it here too. It works by the shock wave blowing the fire out.
PS: It's not really news today. More like news year and a half ago.

you'd think the purchase contract would include a clause saying "Yeah, these anti tank armor piercing canons need to be able to fire their anti tank rounds. If they cannot due to design or manufacturer reasons this contract is void and all money paid to the company for the purchase of these weapons must be immediately and fully refunded"
or you know something to that effect

I'm pretty sure in my example it was F16's all round.
-
@PleegWat That takes all the fun out of it!
There is an example of this. Sweden had soldiers on the ground in Afghanistan, and everyone understood that that meant that they were killing insurgents. Except media and politicians on the left end. When national TV made a documentary about the soldiers and it showed them killing them the left blew a gasket.
And in one particular instance when they were patrolling at night they were ambushed with IEDs, one of the soldiers reacted with "Shit, the dirty monkeys are attacking!" ... Well, we couldn't have that! News papers tried to make a story out of the racist soldiers in the army. It went nowhere.

But how then would politicians earn kickbacks? From what I understand they opted to buy from B*****n companies...

well if the artilery doesn't work, we'll try the tanks. and if they don't work we'll storm the building with our demolition team, and if they can't bring the building down we'll have our jet fighters drop guided bombs on it, and if that doesn't work we'll have our bomber drop bigger bombs on it, and if that doesn't work we'll.... we're not sure what we'll try next, but it'll be nastier! maybe we'll get some chlorine triflouride and dump a whole bunch of it on your roof. That should do some damage!
